The Oz Report March Fund Raiser - 8 cents an issue »

March 26, 2018, 8:02:53 EDT

The Oz Report March Fund Raiser

That's what it costs to get the Oz Report, if you actually pay for it.

Davis Straub|Oz Report|Riker Davis

This is the month where I ask Oz Report readers for their support.  Your contribution pays for hosting our web site and for Gerry's technical support to keep it running.

Thanks for all the support that you have sent in. I wanted to especially thank those who have been extra generous, including: Riker Davis and Matt Thoreson.

You know, all we are asking for is a subscription payment of $20/year, that is equal to 8 cents a copy of the Oz Report. Now surely while not every copy of the Oz Report is worth 8 cents, many are worth more than that to you. At least we hope so.

Seems simple enough. Like most content on the internet, you get to read the Oz Report for free. The trouble for us, not you, is that there are not enough hang glider pilots in this world to make advertising pay for our web hosting costs.

Please, help us out. Support something that you find useful so that it can continue to be there for you.

Options:

1) If you have money in your PayPal account and you are in the US click here: paypal.me/davisstraub and send money as a friend

2) With a credit card click this button:

3) Click here: https://www.paypal.com

With this option please click the "Send&Request" tab to send the money and eliminate credit card fees by clicking  "Send to friends and family in the US," if your PayPal account is connected to your bank account, you are in the US, you have money in your PayPal account, and not just to a credit card:

The email address would be davis and I'm at davisstraub.com

If you’d rather just send a check for $20 or more (US Dollars only, please), please feel free to do so.

Payable to:

If you send a physical check, be sure to send me your email address so that I can register you as a subscriber.

These are our supporters (if you are not on the list and have donated to the Oz Report, email me and I'll make sure that you are recognized): http://ozreport.com/supporters.php. Some of you who I've missed in the past did write to me and made sure I knew just how important the Oz Report was to them. If I've missed you, please do tell me.

Tin Cup - Saying thank you publicly

March 17, 2011, 8:36:39 EDT

Tin Cup

Scare and I ask for your help with this enterprise

Davis Straub|donations|Francesco "Franco" Rinaldi|Franco Rinaldi|Quest Air|Riker Davis

As I mention below, we thank our supporters both privately, in responding to your donation/subscription, and publicly here: http://ozreport.com/supporters.php. We want others to know that you helped us out when we needed it. Our supporters are very important to us. We only ask for a minimal amount of support and many of you have responded with very generous donations, which we really appreciate.

We are able to cover our basic computer/server/internet costs from donations although not pay for our time and efforts. It continues to be a labor of love, just like most hang gliding "businesses."

Check out the technical article below from Wills Wing. I asked Steve about this issue a few days back, and low and behold, Steve had just produced the relevant article. Steve and I communicated about this VG issues in early March and that got him to think about changing the standard VG setup for the T2. Now the 24:1 setup is the standard, as are two sliders in the inner sprog opening allowing for easy use of a camera there.

A great big thank you to Michael Duffy who sent in by far the biggest Oz Report contribution, $500. I was shocked to get $200 from Franco Rinaldi, earlier and very much appreciate every one who has sent in a donation/subscription. Thanks so much. In addition, thanks to Riker Davis, Tim Collard, Perry Jones, and Tony Deleo who sent in physical checks.

Please, help us out. Support something that you find useful so that it can continue to be there for you.

Bare land in New Mexico

New Mexico

A titillating site

PG|Riker Davis|Scott Trueblood

Scott Trueblood «Hang4av8r» writes:

This just came to me from a close flying friend in New Mexico who is a self-admitted Oz Report Junkie, Riker Davis «riker».

Riker taught me to fly hang gliders in 1978, as well as the late Curt Graham; Curt and I did our training hill flying together, and were hang gliding peers until Curt's death in a hang gliding accident in 2004. We had all flown the site being referenced many times.

This is a truly awesome site in the desert grasslands of southern NM, right where the high desert grasslands become mountains. NM has higher mountain peaks than many western states including Idaho and Montana. This location has an almost 360° training hill, known to the locals from way back as "Squaw Tit". One look at the topo map and you will understand the reason for the name, much the same as the "Tetons". Need I say more?

Squaw Tit is a 360° training hill about 200' vertical, which is adjacent to the Vera Cruz mountain site. The Vera Cruz site sits atop an old gold mine and is truly AWESOME flying. I pioneered the place back in the early 80's and there have been untold numbers of epic soaring flights, XC, huge altitude gains, etc, by God only knows how many people over the years. The mountain site is only 600' vertical, but at least as reliable and rewarding as Dry Canyon, about 60 miles south. And in a much more scenic location.

However, it has always been a site in distress too, landowner issues too many to mention, a very long story line there. The Rio Grande Soaring Association worked at length from about 1984-present with the former and deceased owners to maintain site access. Little things such as patrolling the fence lines during hunting season to ward off intruders in the private property. I could tell stories about all of this for hours. The fact that it is being split up and sold off by developers is a good news/bad news thing.

In any case, the parcels have not even come up for sale, as they are "Phase II". According to Riker, they will be coming onto the market in the fall of 2008. 145 acre plots for $1000-2000/acre. To make the perfect flight park, parcels 45 & 46 would need to be secured. In other words, about $300,000 capital investment for a million dollar flight park location.

If the right person could buy these parcels, they would own one of the best and most undiscovered sites in the west, good for everything from first day training to Hang 5 mid-day cloudbase going downwind XC. Not only that, but unbelievable home sites. Not sure about mineral rights but we have spoken with geologists who say there is still plenty of gold left up in them there hills.

The bad news is that if it gets bought by somebody who doesn't give a hoot about hang gliding or paragliding, one of the best soaring sites in southern NM will fade into the history books.

If you know anybody who may be interested in an excellent land investment which doubles as a flight park, let me know, they will not be disappointed.

28th Dry Canyon Fly-in Postponed

Fly-in postponed

Fire danger in New Mexico

Dry Canyon Fly-in 2008|Riker Davis

Riker Davis «riker» writes:

The Lincoln National Forest in southern New Mexico closes indefinitely on May 1st due to extreme fire danger. The 28th annual Memorial Day Weekend Fly-in at Dry Canyon near Alamogordo has been postponed for a future date, possibly Labor Day weekend or in the fall. Any pilots interested in attending this event may stay in touch with developments on conditions and new fly-in dates through www.flywithrgsa.org. We need some rain!

Museum

Hang gliders and sailplanes

J.C. Brown|Riker Davis|sailplane

Riker Davis «rikerdavis» writes:

After over ten years of planning and private fund raising a new museum dedicated to soaring opened in Moriarty, New Mexico on April 1st. The large hangar now has on display a couple dozen sailplanes and a handful of hang gliders spread out over the floor. Hang gliders currently include a Wills Swallowtail, Falcon, UP Axis and a Manta Fledge. Soon there will be well over one hundred ships once the vertical space is used with hanging exhibits.

The director, George Applebay, would welcome a few more donations. He has a Comet coming from George Woodcock in Alamogordo, but mentioned that he would really like to have a state-of-the-art topless ship to show the evolution of design. Contact him «gapplebay» if you would like to make a donation.

Curt Graham's BoomBar hang gliding simulator is a star attraction. JC Brown, Brian Kurowski and I set it up with a supine harness for easy access and replaced the outriggers with bungees to conserve space. Visitors can climb up on the platform, settle into the harness and watch a DVD of Curt explaining how it all worked as an awesome training vehicle on the runways in Hobbs. Very cool.

The museum is right off of I-40 on the main drag at the east end of town - well worth a visit if you are in the area.

You provide a great international link for all of us air junkees. Keep up the Great Work on your Oz Report.

Thanks for your efforts - I check the Oz Report whenever I can. Here's a modest donation.

I've been out of work for 9 weeks with a broken ankle. Reading back issues of the Oz Report was very informative! Here's a few bucks to help you out. If I had go-zillions of dollars, I'd send you 25 grand and a few cases of my favorite bourbon :-)

Riker Davis, davis@trailnet.com, writes:

Fire danger remains extreme in the Lincoln National Forest around Alamogordo and Ruidoso. Today the Forest service announced a complete forest closure beginning Wednesday, May 24.

This will require the postponement of the 20th ANNUAL "MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND" DRY CANYON FLY-IN that was scheduled to begin May 27th until next Labor Day weekend September 2 - 4. There will be an alternate informal get-together over at the Hobbs Industrial Airpark May 27 - 29 with Curt Graham at Cross Roads Windsports. Call him for info at 505-392-8222.
