Are we ready for a new U.S. Hang Gliding Champion?

Zac won't be here

Stephan Mentler, the meet organizer, writes:

As the 2022 National Series competitions draw closer (eight days away now), I have been doing some of the final tangential coordination (e.g., boxed sandwiches for opening night), printing consolidated waivers, etc. This involves counting down the list of names on spreadsheets, making an educated guess as to whether pilots that haven’t paid yet, are still coming, counting crew, drivers, potential family members, etc.

It was during this, that I noticed something quite remarkable. For the first time that I can remember, since the return of the National competitions to Florida, I can’t make a reasonable prediction as to who our Champions are going to be. The winners of the National Series is usually a Christian Ciech, Zack Majors, or the Occasional Nene (Rotor), etc. But this year, it is wide open. The Paradise Airsports Nationals and Wilotree Park Nationals are wide open. So, are we ready to name a new U.S. Hang Gliding Champion?

Ben Dunn|Davis Straub|Dustin Martin|Jeff O'Brien|Jeff Shapiro|Pre-Worlds 2011|Ubaldo Romano|Wills Wing T2C|World Pilot Ranking Scheme|Worlds 2023|Zac Majors

The best guess so far: http://www.cucco2011.org/test_romano/ Click Pilot Info, then Pilots List. Based on December 2, 2009, WPRS ranking, will change when January ranking is available. US pilots chosen to go to the pre-Worlds, so far:

Zac Majors, Wills Wing T2C-144
Dustin Martin, Wills Wing T2C-144
Jeff O'Brien, Wills Wing T2C (144 or 154)
Davis Straub, Icaro Laminar MR1000
Jeff Shapiro, Wills Wing T2C-144
Derreck Turner, Moyes Litespeed S5
Ben Dunn, Moyes Litespeed

Each nation gets up to five pilots independent of WPRS ranking. If more than five pilots from one country apply for the pre-Worlds, then the top five in that nation as per their January 2010 WPRS ranking are allowed in. When all those nations' slots are taken (some nations won't have five slots because less than five pilots pre-registered from that nation, for example, Turkey), then the remaining slots are available by WPRS ranking to the pilots who pre-registered.

Turns out a lot of pilots from Italy pre-registered and they have a lot of good WPRS rankings, and so fifteen pilots are coming from Italy. Derreck Turner and Ben Dunn got in with their WPRS rankings. Many US pilots did not.

Everyone has to get their entry fee in with ten days (January 17th) or they go to the end of the line. Starting on the 17th, pilots are chosen for the now empty slots by pre-registration date.

The actual five man teams will be decided at the competition.

Update: The January WPRS ranking it up and the pilot list will be updated soon.

Apparently hang gliding is not dying at the level of World competitions (or at least pre-Worlds) The Italian based pre-Worlds is over subscribed already, just a few days after opening the registration to the waiting list. The local regulations state:

Registration will open on 2nd November 2009. Priority will be given to national teams of up to 5 pilots per country.

Places will be allocated starting from 7th January 2010 to pilots on the waiting list.

Allocation will be based on WPRS ranking on 1st January 2010 followed by order of registration for any unranked pilots.

As from 7th January, all confirmed pilots will have ten days time in which to pay the registration fee, in order not to lose their priority position in the pilot list.

Therefore, confirmed pilots whose receipt of payment does not reach the organizers by 17th January, will be moved to the bottom of the waiting list.

All other pilots accepted afterwards, will have 10 days to pay the registration fee before their place is reallocated to another pilot.

Nene wins the Brazilian Nationals

Results: http://www.superrace2008.blogspot.com/

Last day:

1 Nene Rotor (Wills Wing T2C 144) 1:18:13 974
2 André Wolf (Moyes Litespeed RS 4) 1:18:43 953
3 Jonny Durand (Moyes Litespeed RS 4) 1:20:49 900

Overall:

1 Nene Rotor (Wills Wing T2C 144) 5845
2 André Wolf (Moyes Litespeed RS 4) 5800
3 Jonny Durand (Moyes Litespeed RS 4) 5570

I did want to mention one thing about Andre Wolf. Andre won't tell you this but he has a bad back. In fact, I believe that he is going to go in and have it looked at. He thought it was just "old age" but when he saw me hopping around like a spring chicken at the WRE, he realized that something was wrong.

At the WRE he cut short one flight and maybe two because his back was hurting him. The short flight was a mere 100 miles and he said his back hurt most at the first part of the flight. The other, earlier, flight was 200 miles.

Nene Rotor wins the first day - Santa Cruz Flats Race

Day one SCFR

Brazilians on Wills Wing T2C's, first and second

Dustin Martin|Jamie Shelden|Jeff O'Brien|Leonardo Dabbur|Nene Rotor|Santa Cruz Flats Race 2008|Wills Wing T2C

The flex wing preliminary results (there are half a dozen or more screwed up track log files).

The rigid wing results (similar problems here).

At 2:30 pm (mountain standard time) a bunch of us were at the edge of the start circle and as high as we had been for the last hour so off we went racing toward the first turnpoint to the east, the first turnpoint on our 64 mile triangle task. We called this task at the last minute as it looked like the winds weren't that high (they were forecasted to be 11 - 14 mph) and we want to come back on every day that we can.

Dustin was off to the north, my left, and I couldn't see him. Jeff O'Brien and Shapiro turned around hoping to get higher for the next start time. There were a few pilots near me but they were all lower as we raced out toward the tiny airport at Sarito.

I was soon on my own and having to work light lift as I got low. This was not good, being out in front and there was target on my back that would get real big real soon. Sure enough a bunch of pilots (maybe some from the first start time, but likely many from the second) showed up at Sarito and were high over me as I finally found some good lift (which they also found).

The wind was 10 mph out of the west as I headed south towards the Eds turnpoint 18 miles away. The lift was now much better, which was a good thing because it was tough going against the cross wind. Pilots were dropping out but I found strong lift. The Jeff's dropped out along the way.

I found a strong one and got to 8,000' without having to think about it. Unfortunately, there was plenty of sink at the second turnpoint behind the rice paddies and I didn't go into search mode before I got there. Down to a thousand feet coming back all I found was zero sink and finally that wasn't enough to get me out of there.

Dustin got to goal early (but he'll have to re download his tracklog) but Nene was right behind him gaining almost fifteen minutes on him. Leo Dabbur started when I did at the first start time, but had the second fastest time and got a few extra arrival points.

I think all the rigid wing pilots made it back. There was a ten mph head wind on the last 24 mile leg, but that didn't bother them or those flex wing pilots that made it in faster than the rigid wings.

Jamie Shelden is doing the downloads and I'm doing the scoring. We downloaded all the waypoints with GPSDump and that worked quite well. We are downloading all the tracklogs with GPSDump also and there have been a few problems with bad tracklogs which Jamie will need to work out tomorrow. I'm scoring with my OzGAP 2005 script in SeeYou.

Finger Lakes Aerosports Park|flight park|Rhett Radford|Dragonfly|Morningside|XC|ATOS|Belinda Boulter|Nene Rotor

http://www.longacrefarms.com/flightpark.htm

Rain, rain has gone away
Oh what a pretty day.

We’re here at the new aerotow flight park in western New York and the place is jumping. With the front going through yesterday, postfrontal conditions setup today. Light winds in the morning and then 10-15 mph in the middle of the day out of the west (oh, Rhett Radford is going to have a tough time flying the Dragonfly from Morningside.

It got up to twenty mph after three, but calmed down to almost nothing and turned slightly north an hour before sundown (seems to be the pattern here). It’s probably due to the huge lake (Ontario) to our north.

The cu’s were popping around noon today and I got up early, only to have the cleat come out of my control frame. I need to pull on the flaps to slow down in the thermals, and as I had gotten off low, I was working 50 to 100 fpm up and wondering why I was going so fast. Finally I realized that the cleat was gone and thought maybe I should land and put a fix together.

I was drifting fast down wind and working broken light lift without my flaps so I decided to land and go back up again. Unfortunately I chose the wrong field. The “farmer” was less than happy to see me and wouldn’t let me take my glider out of the field. I’ve never had anyone do this to before. At least

Fortunately Doug, the owner of the land where Finger Lakes Aerosports Park is located, and who in fact is a real farmer, was next to the phone when I called Belinda from this guy’s neighbors house and came right down deal with this guy.

The neighbors and Doug pretty much got into it with the “faux” farmer, and I was able to break down the glider and get it out of there. They were all cussing and swearing, but Doug calmed him down by just letting him vent until he had had his say. We’ll have to put an X in that field.

Took off again around 3 PM. People had been going up and down but the sky was still full of cu’s and some headed off down wind. John on an ATOS went forty miles down wind in less than two hours – and no driver. Said he got beat up in the air here a bay that headed south toward him. Some mixing in the air.

It was stronger at 3 PM – 20 mph, but the lift was still there. I hung around, but tomorrow I flail off downwind either east or southeast.

Pilots were towing up all day and thoroughly enjoying themselves even with the strong winds. There are just rolling hills upwind and downwind and the lake just to the north.

The parking lot here, a grass field, is packed. Mike Barber and Rob Kells are here demoing gliders. Ron says that Wills Wing is having their best year in seven years (so much for the doom mongers who inhabit the HG list). In addition to good sales in all their product lines they’ve sold 200 U2’s so far this year.

Nene Rotor in Brazil is the world’s largest WW Talon sales guy, and Markus Villinger’s Wills Wing sales are picking up in Europe (didn’t that Euro gain in value over the last year?). Nixon in Brazil is doing well selling tandem Falcons. As I recall the tandem hang gliding business is big at the beach in Brazil.

Doug, the farmer, was the first student of the Finger Lakes Aerosports Park and was flying tonight, I saw him stick some foot landings near dark.

It looks like we’ll have a couple of nice days here before the hurricane comes through. It is extremely beautiful from the air. The corn maze to the north is amazing, and there are farm lands and woods everywhere.

Obviously very good pilots on very good gliders like the Icaro200 Laminar do very well. The Aeros Combat 2 seems to have enticed more top pilots to be among its ranks, and with Lukas Bader doing very well the representation of this glider in the top ten has increased.

It seems that Nene and the Wills Wing Talon are quite competitive. With so few pilots in Europe or Brazil flying the Talon it would be hard to flood the top ten at the pre Europeans with Talon pilots. Perhaps others should consider Nene’s performance here. Only one US pilot was flying at this meet and he was flying a Talon.

The Moyes Litespeeds did not do as well as last year. I notice that Gerolf raced himself into the ground just before the goal on the last day dropping down three places. You go to win not come in fifth. The Moyes Litespeed remains a very popular glider, but it and its pilots are competing against other manufacturers and their top pilots, so it is very hard to completely dominate.

Congratulations to all the pilots and to the manufacturers for their consistent support of the sport. Congrats to Manfred for his consistent domination of this high level competition.

Heavy rains during the night.

Overcast in the morning. The forecast is for improving weather during the day, but not enough improvement as the winds are predicted to be even higher than yesterday. Winds measured by the buoys are already over 20 knots.

The overcast goes away around 1 PM, and we have blue skies with cu’s at 1,500’ to 2,000’ with winds out of the west.

Things change. The provisional results I received earlier had something wrong with them, so here are the latest results:

There is a warm front to the northwest in Panama City in the Florida panhandle where there are presently (around noon) thunderstorms. With the strong winds we would have to call a task to the northwest toward the area of likely thunderstorms this afternoon.

The pilots that started at 2:15 PM were the quickest into goal, not being held back by the lollygagging rigid wing pilots, but Manfred was first to goal, so that counted for something.

Yesterday, before the task, Manfred was in twelfth. Today after winning the fifth (and likely last) task:

8 ALONZI Mario Aeros Combat 2 FRA 3548
9 WALBEC Richard Moyes Litespeed 4 FRA 3488
10 OHLSSON Andreas Moyes Litespeed 5 SWE 3468

Oleg benefited immensely when Manfred didn’t make goal two days in a row and he then kept the competition far away from him. Oleg ended up only 100 points behind Manfred at the Flytec Championships and when Manfred didn’t make goal at the Wallaby Open the first time, Oleg jumped ahead of him by enough points to make it very difficult for Manfred to catch him. Perhaps that was his consideration when he raced to goal and landed 1 mile short of Wauchula on day four.

Antoine, after not even registering on the applause-o-meter in Australia (but doing well enough to come in at 11th at the Flytec Championship), did very well at Wallaby. He was able to gain a few extra points on the fifth day by racing ahead and getting a minute on everyone else at goal. Funny how things change so rapidly.

After Paris and Mikey took themselves out of the competition, Curt flew well and was the first American. He was 10th at the Flytec Championship just behind Paris and ahead of Mike, so he definitely improved. Too bad he landed after gliding with me on the third day or he could easily have been in second place at the Wallaby Open. All he had to do was keep gliding over the Bok Tower. I would have appreciated his help at that point.

Carlos has yet to decide whether to fly for the Brazilians or on the American National team (if he makes it). He beat his fellow Brazilian Betinho after finishing at 16th at the Flytec Championship behind Betinho at 11th there.

Jon Durand Jr. finished very well again doing a little better overall in this competition than the last one where he was sixth. Jon is a strong pilot who is willing to take risks, and came out the top Australian in the Wallaby Open.

There were two Aeros Combats in the top ten at the Wallaby Open with Paris out and three at the Flytec Championship. This is certainly a jump in their top numbers.

Only Manfred is representing the Icaro 2000 Laminar in the top ten. Kari Castle on the Laminar did very well at the Flytec Championship to come in 14th (and perhaps hold her place on the US National team). At the Wallaby Open she dropped down a little to 16th, behind Jim Lee at 14th. She is still looking for a harness that works for her and doesn’t cause such pain in her chest (maybe I can get her to try my harness).

Moyes continues to win the numbers game with six Litespeeds in the top ten. Lots of pilots fly the Litespeed and many of them do well (right after Manfred and Oleg). Wills Wing had Carlos on the Talon, so that rounds out the top ten pilots.

I asked José Luiz Moura Velloso <jose.luiz@jlv.com.br> to send me the results of the flex wings only. He sent both flex wings and rigid wings. Jose has been one of the most cooperative score keepers ever and I really appreciate his help. He is even using the HTML templates that I sent him. Hurray! He writes:

There were lots of pilots complaining yesterday about including the rigid wings together with the flex wings. They think it is not fair to score the two classes together. It would be almost the same as having a competition with hang gliders and paragliders together. There are some pilots that think that they should also have different tasks.

I talked a lot with Gerolf two days ago, and he had some good points about this, most on some unfair advantages that rigid wings have in this competition in Governador Valadares. Most of time, they use their better gliders to fly higher than the flex wings, and kept waiting on the flex wing pilots to make all the flight decisions and take the risks, knowing that they could reach then easily after they got to the next thermal.

(editor’s note: This competition is run as a race, with all pilots starting at the same time. Rigid wing pilots who hold back on flex wing gaggles are behaving in an unsportsmanlike manner. They should use their better gliders to pull the lead gaggle and not wait on others to do the hard work for them. Of course, sometimes they just aren’t in the lead, but often they are and they need to act like leaders.)

I agreed with him when we spoke, but thinking about it later, and looking at it from the organizer's point of view, I think that scoring the two classes separately is enough. The rigid wings will have an advantage, but all rigid will have the same advantage, so that’s no problem. The organizer listened to the pilots, and as a result of the complaining, I think that the next competitions in Brazil will have no mixing in scoring.

Well, a huge win for Nene and the Wills Wing Talon. The story I heard was that Gerolf, Andre and Betinho agreed to fly together to see if they could get Betinho a win over Nene on this last day. Betinho fell down and ended up 40th on the last day falling far out of second place. He can afford to drop a day on the Brazilian ranking system.

Are rigid wings 10% better? Yah, probably. On the second day of the meet 13 minutes was added to the times for the ATOS pilots. I had heard earlier that a 10% penalty (13 minutes is about 10% of Betinho’s flight time of 135 minutes) would be added to the rigid wing pilots.

For CIVL purposes rigid wing and flex wing pilots need to be scored separately. Usually the rigids and flex wings are only scored together for the purposes of comparison, but not for any official purposes. In Brazil, which is not too happy with CIVL, scores them together and then adds the penalty. I assume that at the end of the meet, they will in fact be scored separately before the results are sent to CIVL.

So the unaltered results of the second day would show the ATOSes coming in first, second and third, with the third ATOS in one second in front of Betinho. I assume that they were gaggling together and then racing into goal.

David Glover says that the word is that Mike Barber was the only pilot to make goal on the first day of the Andradas Grand Prix in Brazil. Neko writes:

Yesterday (first comp day), there were heavy clouds. Mike Barber was the only guy at goal. Monex (from south Brazil) was second and Marcelo Ferro (from Sao Paulo) third. Andre Wolf didn’t launch (heavy sky) and many pilots had a sled ride.

Sergiy Semenov from the Ukraine on a Combat 2 was fourth, Carlos Bessa was tenth, and Nene was eleventh.

Three Litespeeds in the top three. Three Talons in the top eleven.

Here’s a suggestion to the guys just below Manfred in the standings, why don’t you get together and fly together as a team. Maybe, just maybe you’ll have a chance to take on Manfred.

The task today was in another direction (to the north). The task had 108.0 km, but the goal is almost 200 km away from Brasilia, so pilots come later today. Everybody but one french guy come back already ( at9 pm). There were 26 pilots in goal.

Paris Williams didn't fly today. He wasn't feeling well (stomach problem) at the take off and decided not to fly. He was here in the Organization Head quarters, and told us that he is feeling better.

Marco Oliveira <marco@boston-tech.com> writes:

I would like to mention that the pilots are not coming back to the start point as mentioned on your article. Rather, they are coming from + - 70Km straight line from a northern area on the surroundings of Brasilia.

I just came from there last week and had a great time watching the arrival of Nene and Andre arrive only 1 sec apart. I spent some time with Mike and Carlos and they both were very happy and impressed with the flying over there. This time of the year Brasilia is very dry, humidity reaches 10%!!! Nonetheless, you still have very well defined cu to show you the way. Winds are also helpful, usually leading to Brasilia.

Flytec Championship – I think we are having fun yet »

Many pilots were excited about the short task yesterday and getting to goal for the first time. This really upped the mood of the competitors and brought everyone one into the fold. The new guys wanted to be included also.

I wrote a while back about Tove’s meet in Deniliquin and how she organized it so that it encouraged new pilots to join in competition. No one has taken her example and run with it yet, but maybe we’ll see more of that. We on the task committee have to set tasks for the major racers, so it would be nice to have a meet where we could see tasks for the great middle of the field.

Did I say that we were having fun yet? Seems like the competitors are really liking the tasks and enjoying the facilities here at Quest Air. Good weather helps, of course, and Floridais doing its best to makes us all happy.

There is a lot going on at Quest in addition to the meet. A new turbine Dragonfly flew tonight, so that’s bringing a lot of excitement to all the motor heads. With so many Dragonflies and trikes here, not only do we get in the air in a real big hurry, but all the tug pilots get to talk to one another and encourage each other.

With an east-northeast wind prediction and difficulty forecasting the lift, we call a straight run, 68 miles, out to the WillistonAirportto the north, northwest. We want folks to see a little bit of Florida, if they happen to look down at all. A little cross country flying wouldn’t hurt either.

There is a strong east wind on the ground, and in the air (I’ll measure 60° at 14 mph throughout the flight), so launches prove to be a bit tricky. I’ll break two weak links, which will start me off in a fine mood, nervous as possible.

With the high pressure and shearing winds, the lift above Quest is quite a handful. I’m getting tossed around something fierce and frankly I’m totally terrified. I’m thinking of landing, but the competition spirit keeps me in the air.

We’re waiting for the 2:15 PMstart time, and even with my late start because of the multiple weaklink breaks due to the action at tree top level, I’ve plenty of time to get to cloud base. Russell takes me up on the third tow and it is as smooth as can be. He deposits me under a small cloud that is working at 200 fpm, and I much appreciate it.

All the rigids were out near the start circle circumference, but they come back to join me as we wait until the last start time. I assume that they are thinking like me that we want the full heating of the day to fly our reasonably short task in.

I’m at cloud base at a little over 5,000’ and given that we are all back a mile and a half from the start circle circumference I decide to leave in time to make it there as the start time starts. Seems like some other pilots want to keep working to stay out of the clouds close to Quest.

There are lots of high clouds, and thin cu’s with cloud base at 5,000’ out in front of us. There is very little development today in the clouds, but they are numerous. They are mostly just wisps.

I go on an eight mile glide to 2,300’ and find some lift with a few other pilots under very marginal clouds. It’s 400 fpm back to 4,700’ so I’m happy to be high. I guess I only need to say this once more here. I’ll be terrified for about 75% of the flight. I experience it has very turbulent, and I can’t help thinking that the glider to going to go over at any minute. Other pilots will mention how turbulent it was.

There are flex wings who’ve taken the 2 PM start gate out in front of us, along with a couple of rigid wing pilots who also took the earlier start time. I’m falling behind as I keep leaving uncomfortable lift, and hoping to find lighter, but more comfortable climbs.

At around Wildwood I start chasing the lead gaggle – a gaggle of mixed rigids and flex wings. They are moving very fast, racing from thermal to thermal, but I’ve got the advantage that I’m following and can see where they find lift.

There is a tough stretch right around Wildwood as we head toward I-75, then things start to improve and folks get more and more into the racing mode. I’m still way behind many of the other rigids, and the top flex wings are spread all around. We’ve probably got 20 to 30 pilots in the front of this race, within two miles of each other.

Southwest of Ocalawe get under a cloud street that lasts for maybe 3 or 4 miles, and I’m somehow able to catch up with the top few pilots. We al decide to go on glide from over 5,000’ and this will turn into a ten mile glide down to 1,700 until a flex wing pilot way to my right is the first to find the lift. For the first time during the flight I’m happy to be in a thermal because it is completely smooth and takes us back to over 5,000’.

At 15 miles out my IQ/Comp is telling me to go on final. I’ve got it at 15/1. I head out, but find a small gaggle to my left that is climbing well, and make the mistake to go join them. I really didn’t need the lift and this would have been my opportunity to pass Christian and just go into goal.

The last twelve miles in are full race mode. I can see Andy Hollidge in his Top Secret way in front of me and higher, but I’m pulling in much more than he and catching him. There is little chance to go down before goal, so the only reason to slow down is to absorb the bumps from all the lift we are flying through. Andy can’t pull in any more, so he’s at a big disadvantage.

Christian Ciech is just in front of me, and there is no catching him. I’m surrounded by (but soon they are below and a little bit in front of me) Nene Rotor and Chris Arai (who took the 2 PM start time) and Robert Reisinger and Joseph Zweckmayr who took that last start clock. The first four flexies get in just a few seconds before I cross the goal, second for the day. Curt Warren started much early and came in between Manfred and Brian.

Segundo Buenos Aires Flatlander

Wed, Dec 6 2000, 1:00:01 am GMT

Andre Wolf|Carlos Avila|Hugo Avila|Mario Alonzi|Nene Rotor|Stewart Midwinter

Stewart Midwinter <midtoad@canada.com> writes:

Days One, Two

The second Buenos Aires Flatlander competition got underway on Sunday, December 10. The wind was quite strong from the NE, and none of the competitors felt very enthusiastic about having a task, especially when the skies grew dark to the west and virga appeared. But that didn't stop a plane-load of parachutists from going up to 4000m in a Queen Air for a flight.

Monday the first task was set. Again there were moderate winds, this time from the NW, so a 70 task was called to the village of Verónica. As it turned out, there was a strong inversion around 1100m AGL, and that, coupled with the wind which soon became a cross wind, shot down the pilots within 20 km. André Wolf, Mario Alonzi and Hugo Avila flew the furthest, but the day was worth a mere 16 points on the GAP scoring system.

Tuesday, the second task was to fly straight south to a virtual goal near the village of Monasterio on the edge of one of the lagoons near the town of Chascomús. All scoring in this meet is with GPS only, using virtual turnpoints and cylinders of 500m radius. (I personally think 250m is sufficient, but the current beta version of Check'in which we are using will not permit a radius of less than 500m).

Check'in is useful for task preparation as well, as most of the turnpoints we planned to use were first entered into the PC, then downloaded to the pilots' GPS from Check'in. To create the new virtual turnpoint for today's flight, we used OziExplorer with a calibrated, scanned map of the region, and looked for a location that was about the right distance away (78 km), then created a turnpoint in OziExplorer and used the program to download the new goal to the pilots' GPSes. This took only about 10 seconds per GPS. After the flight, we use Check'in to upload the track log and check whether the pilots passed around the turnpoints within the appropriate radius. As the pilots passed through the start point cylinder on tow, and no one reached goal today, we simply entered the coordinates of the marked landing waypoint into the RACE scoring program in order to get the scores.

Winds were lighter today, and straight from the north, close to parallel a major highway, so in spite of the low maximum height of the thermals (about 1250m), many pilots made good distance. Nene Rotor of Brazil flew 75 km and got to within 3 km of goal after a difficult 3 hour flight in often light lift with a low-level inversion making it difficult to climb through 780m. This gave him 710 points for winning the task (and 721 total), followed closely by André Wolf of Brazil with 66 km (674 points after 2 rounds) and Ralph Striewski of Germany with 62 km (638 pts. total). XCeara winner Mario Alonzi of France was 5th at 53 km, behind Christián Cid of Chile and myself from Canada at 58 km - a real international field! Both Nene and Ralph are flying Litespeeds, which seem to be climbing really well in the light, smooth lift of the pampas. André and Mario are flying Laminars. All of the 16 competitors were towed up by two DragonFly tugs within an hour.

Flying here is pretty much country club flying. Each afternoon we return to the field to take a dip in the swimming pool, then have a few beers in the garden before a dinner of barbecued meat is laid on, typically about 10 pm. People sit around talking until after midnight, then turn in to sleeping quarters in tents or… a mobile motel! This motel is built from a transport truck trailer, and has 10 rooms sleeping 40 people in two levels. Each room has 4 beds and its bathroom with shower. You have to see it to believe it! Here's a picture…

More reports will come later in the week. We have only a radio phone at the Fly Ranch at present, and it can't be used for internet, so this report is being sent out from a telephone in a village 15 km away. The Fly Ranch itself is located 65 km south of Buenos Aires on the toll highway to Mar del Plata.

Wed. a.m. update - today there is very high humidity and high temperature, and cumulus congestus have formed already by mid-morning. The day is called off, and we'll all head into Buenos Aires for a night of dining and tango dancing.

The weather in the province of Buenos Aires is a continual mystery, even, apparently, for the forecasters. For in spite of a very pessimistic forecast for Thursday, the day began to show very encouraging signs by 10 am: already substantial cus were forming, and winds were light from the south. With this wind direction, some pilots wanted a repeat or variation of last year's races north to the Ezpeleta airfield on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Instead, and to make things a little more difficult, we settled on an out-return task to a virtual turnpoint at a highway intersection half-way there. Total task distance: 48 km.

The window opened at 12:30, and immediately pilots began launching - the earliest start of the meet. I was third off, and upon turning away from the tug upon release, never stopped turning until arriving at cloudbase at 1450m. Ralph Striewski and I headed north to the next cloud at speeds up to 80-90 km/h, as the lift was 4 m/s (800 fpm) in the best cores. Finally, a good racing day! After several thermals, Ralph had left me behind, as there was no way I could keep up with a Litespeed while flying a Ram Air.

As I neared the turnpoint, I could no longer see Ralph ahead of me, and with a small blue hole to cross, instincts told me to switch into low gear. At 700m AGL, I grabbed any lift I could find and began to climb slowly. This turned out to be a good decision, for Ralph found no lift at the turnpoint and landed soon afterward, while I entered the cylinder at 1200m. While rounding the turnpoint, I sensed motion out of the corner of my eye, and there were the two Brazilians, André Wolf and Nene Rotor, zooming past me in unison. I tried to follow them, and was able to get to the first thermal they found, but shortly they had disappeared ahead of me. There's probably a big enough difference between a kingposted hang glider and a new topless model to warrant a separate class!

The return leg was clearly into wind, and with its velocity increasing and the cloudbase only 1200m, it was going to be very difficult to complete the task. The excerpt of Nene's track log shows how difficult it was: it took several tries to get past one section of the course. I had trouble at the same location and had to land. Mario Alonzi got a bit further along, André Wolf made it to 5.6 km from goal, and Nene had the goal in his sights until he got below 500m and found the surface wind was stronger than aloft: he landed in 25-30 km/h winds just 0.9 km short of goal (and just 0.4 km short of the cylinder edge).

With three tasks completed, we now have the following standings:

1 Nene Rotor 1048
2 André Wolf 979
3 Mario Alonzi 840
4 Ralph Striewski, Stewart Midwinter 838

Friday update: As the sun set, the wind died to nil, all the clouds dissipated, and a student went for his first solo flight. The temperature had dropped after the sea-breeze convergence passed, and it looked very promising for an open-distance task today. Instead, this morning we awoke to find the sky overcast, and a cold South wind blowing at 40 km/h. At middday, the overcast has thinned, but we will not have a task today. So, it all comes down to what happens tomorrow, the final day of the contest.

Mindspring Vs. AOL »

Tue, Oct 26 1999, 10:00:05 pm GMT

AOL|Oz Report

Apparently none of my AOL readers can receive the Oz Report in its full HTML graphic format with the background, fonts, colors, and in-line photos. If this is true for you, might I very humbly suggest – Mindspring.

Now that Earthlink and Mindspring have merged, they are the second biggest IPS in the country. Like AOL they have POPs (modems) every where. They also have 2000 international POPs at 10 cents a minutes. Great for us international travelers.

I have watched Mindspring for over a year now and signed up a month ago. They are fabulous, and adhere strictly to Internet standards. No more stupid little ads jumping onto your screen. You use whatever Internet standard software you like to access your e-mail and web pages (I use Internet Explorer 5.0 and Outlook Express 5.0).

Until Mindspring got this big, I was hesitant to recommend it because it didn't have the national coverage that you find with AOL. But now, it does, and the system rocks. High speed access. I never get kicked off. I can connect anywhere I want and it works the first time.

You can sign up now and get lots of savings. Their home page is full of information and very helpful to new users. You'll find it at http://www.mindpsring.net.

I suggest that you completely ignore the software that they send you (don't even load it). Use your own software. Configure a DUN in Windows 95 or 98 to dial in. Sign up on-line, it is the easiest. Configure your DUN to not "Log on to Network," use only TCP/IP, (you can check Enable software compression), configure the DHS settings (click TCP/IP settings) for 207.69.188.185 and 207.69.188.186, and you are all set. Be sure to include @mindspring.com in your username in your DUN connectoid.

Joel is a good pilot, and has done well before, but he didn't beat the Brazilians at the Worlds. Then two months later he goes to Brazil to fly in the Nationals, and beats all the good pilots from the team that won the Worlds.

Here's the message from Vicki at Moyes (<moyes@moyes.com.au>):

Moyes Litespeed Dominates The Brasilian Nationals!

The first production Litespeeds went to the Brasilian Nationals - Andradas.

1. Joel Rebbechi Litespeed 2. Nene Rotor Litespeed 3. Andre Wolf Laminar 4. Beto Schmidt Topless 5. Guga Saldanha Fusion 6. Pedro Matos Laminar 7. Lincon Laminar 8. Luiz Niemeyer Laminar 9. Calais Stealth 10. Ortega Laminar

Joel flew a completely standard Litespeed, which easily passed US certification. Nene's World proto glider was set to Certified settings before the comp.

Nene Rotor won the first three days of the comp, and Joel won the last three days.

A Litespeed Won 1000 Points Every Day Of The Comp!
