John Kennedy writes:
Sorry to hear that this will be the last year of publication. I found the Oz Report when I re-entered hang gliding in 2002. It has been an invaluable source of information and encouragement.
My first glider was a Pliable Moose Standard that I won in a raffle, along with a helmet, harness, and lessons from Upslope, in Denver, in 1976. I flew it for a couple of years but a young family, work demands, and other distractions took me away from flying.
The Oz Report will continue, just in a different format.

Thanking those who have been especially generous
John Kennedy|Orlando Stephenson|Oz Report
Some Oz Report readers have been extra helpful in their support of the Oz Report. We like to highlight their generosity. We especially thank Rob Lesser, Stephan Mentler, Thomas C Ide, John Dullahan, Koos de Keijzer, Daniel Lukaszewicz, Knut Ryerson, Orlando Stephenson, Timothy Delaney, Jean-Pierre DELAGE, Luther Thompson, and John Kennedy,
This is the month where I ask Oz Report readers for their support. Your contribution pays for hosting our web site and for Gerry's technical support to keep it running.

As you know, all we are asking for is a subscription payment of $20/year.

Please, help us out. Support something that you find useful so that it can continue to be there for you.

Thanking everyone
Davis Straub|John Kennedy|Oz Report|Wilotree Park
Thanks to John Kennedy for his generous support.
You might notice that I send a thank you to everyone who sends in a donation/becomes a subscriber. This is not an automated function. My PayPal account doesn't just notice that you've sent in $20 or more. I'm actually opening up the account, opening up my subscriber list, opening up my email reader and using these three tools to properly send you a thank you.
It requires that I find your email address in PayPal if I don't have it here in my email reader. I also need to insert you in the proper alphabetical location on my subscriber list. I need to respond to the email notification that PayPal sends to me about your donation and erase the reply email address to PayPal and put in your email address.
I've got to upload the revised subscriber list to my server. If you were especially generous I need to note that and put in an additional thank you in the next issue of the Oz report.
None of this is particular onerous, but it does take time and effort. It is that effort that I make to thank everyone that is the reciprocation that I give for your thoughtfulness in donating. That and producing and sending out the Oz Report, of course.
So thanks again.
April writes:
Is Davis Straub a Jerk? Or Dick? No. I have known Davis and lived amongst him for years now. Davis is a unique character, that is how I would describe Davis. Davis is direct which at times, comes across as insensitive. Honestly, that is "just Davis". That being said, in my opinion, Davis is neither jerk or a dick just a guy who works hard to make our flying community a better place. I am grateful for all his hard work.
Stephane Mentler writes:
I wanted to provide my input regarding the Davis is a dick / jerk debate. I believe the best descriptor for you would be direct bordering on curt. As a former police officer, cavalry scout, infantryman, and parachutist, I appreciate this attribute and can tell you that most service members would too. For the folks that can’t handle it; Harden Up, as an infamous Australian used to say.
On a serious note, I recall when I was going to be stuck in Americus, GA after the conclusion of one of the last Flytec Race and Rallies. Someone recommended that I ask you for a ride, and I did. You didn’t know me, but said yes without hesitation. There are plenty of other examples that I have witnessed or know of in which you have exhibited a general kindheartedness anonymously without expectation of recognition.
So to continue...

The various waypoint formats
Davis Straub|donations|Jim Rooney|John Kennedy|Quest Air|US Nationals
I've been working to create new waypoint files for the upcoming US Nationals, Flytec Championships, and Flytec Race of Champions. Google Earth has made it so much easier to check out all the goals. Combine that with the free programs G7ToWin and GPSBabel, you are set to go. I also use SeeYou, CompeGPS, and MapSource to check out the results.
These new waypoint files will help out the competition pilots and soon I'll be doing the same for the Worlds in Big Spring.
Jim Rooney is redoing the network here at Quest so we were offline last night. That's why you missed my pleas in Monday's Oz Report.
You can send $20 or more for a yearly subscription/donation. To pay for your subscription with your credit card or PayPal account:

Hang gliding tandem in New Zealand.
John Kennedy
John Kennedy «John.G.Kennedy» sends this:
http://www.avweb.com/eletter/archives/avflash/245-full.html#187421
Eleni Zeri, a 23-year-old tourist from Greece, died in March 2003 during a tandem hang-glider ride in the mountains of New Zealand after the pilot took off without properly securing her to the glider. Pilot Steve Parson, 53, of Canada, admitted that he had made a mistake, and last Friday apologized in court to the victim's mother. "Eleni was very brave. I'm so very, very sorry," Parson said. He was sentenced to serve 350 hours' community service and pay NZ$10,000 in reparation.
After launch, when Parson realized Zeri was not secured, he wrapped his legs around her to try to keep her with him. She told him she couldn't hold on, and fell 500 feet to her death. New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it will start next month to review and overhaul the regulations that affect commercial adventure-aviation operators. However, a CAA spokesman told the New Zealand Herald the review was not a response to Parson's case. "What happened in his case was in no way related to the regulations," said Bill Sommer. "The company he worked for had safety procedures in place that were in line with regulations, but he failed to follow them." However, the current regulations need to be streamlined to make compliance easier for operators and the CAA, he said.

Drugs to "improve" performance

What if they made you think better and fly safer?
http://www.avweb.com/eletter/archives/avflash/217-full.html#187000
John Kennedy «John.G.Kennedy»
writes:
Perhaps there are drugs that can enhance pilot performance. See the first two articles in the URL above.
I asked: "So tell me, what do you think, should these be allowed or banned?" John responded:
Your question is a difficult one to answer. As one of those guys
that has more gray hair than any other color right now, I can see the benefit of
a substance that would help me to focus attention and enhance my decision making
process. (I have to admit that I do have to hunt up my reading glasses every
once in a while.)
If I were a competition pilot flying with the likes of Paris, Manfred, Oleg and
the other young guns, I would be mightily tempted to hunt down a source of these
drugs to try to get on an even mental keel with them. If I were in their age
category, but consistently being out flown, I would be tempted to use them with
the hope that it would make my mental processing of flight conditions equal to
theirs.
However, an argument can be made that any drug that helps the user to focus
their attention, and decision making, isn't any different than steroids that
increase muscle strength. They both modify natural limitations that define the
differences between competitors.
On the other hand, if I can take a substance that helps me to make better
decisions, based on sensory input and experience, it will probably help to make
me a safer pilot. I believe this is what the authors of the referenced article
are hypothesizing.
So after all this hemming and hawing, I guess I would have to say that I would
support a ban of the drugs in competition because it allows a competitor to
cheat nature in the same way that steroids help the weight lifter or other
athlete.

Getting out more Oz Reports, and putting more material into each of them presents a problem. Maybe it is too much. Maybe I need to be more selective so that readers aren't overwhelmed. I want readers to look forward to reading the Oz Report, not to feel that they have to wade through it to find what they want.

Scroll down to near the bottom of this issue to see how to support the Oz Report or click here.
I'll be looking more at RSS feeds in the near future to see if that solves the problem of too much Oz Report, which some of you may be feeling. Check out our beta test at https://ozreport.com/rss.php.xml if you have an RSS reader. Gerry (see below) is a very creative guy.
