Manfred Flew a Single Surface Glider

Wed, Jun 9 2021, 10:20:15 am MDT

For the Victory

Icaro 2000|Manfred Ruhmer

The new PIUMA, light in the air, big in the sky.

It’s not just lightness that makes it special.

PIUMA was designed with the objective of creating a basic hang glider with even easier and reliable behaviour, while also giving more demanding pilots an improved performance.

PIUMA offers better characteristics at medium-low speeds.

PIUMA transmits piloting sensations that are appreciated from the first moments of flight.
Its excellent behaviour at low speeds guarantees an easier and safer launch, easier entry into a thermal, and stability both in turns and in straight flight.

PIUMA attains a greater maximum efficiency when compared to its predecessor, above all when fitted with the new wingtips (optional).

PIUMA is also distinctive for its lower weight (up to 1 kg lighter than the RX2) and speed of assembly.

PIUMA is ideal for all pilots who are looking for a hang glider that is easy to use, with zero complications.
It is also the ideal hang glider for learning at the practise slope.

Christian Ciech|Icaro 2000

Christian Ciech writes:

Icaro will try to produce masks. Tomorrow we should receive the fabric-non-fabric and we will make the first samples for the approbation from the University of Milan. Then we will start the production. They are going be washable masks for multiple use. Our production can't be that big.

In the meantime we already ordered 10000 masks from a Chinese certified supplier. 5000 of them will go for the hospital of Busto Arsizio, a small city north of Milan.

Here is a little training incentive that I am introducing through http://icaro2000usa.com. I am calling it the Paraglider Pilot's expand your flight envelop program.

In a nutshell, if you have a USHPA P1 or higher rating and get your H1 from a partner hang gliding school, you will receive $75 toward the cost of training (paid directly to the school) with the purchase of any helmet at http://icaro2000usa.com.  Get your H2 from a partner hang gliding school, you will receive $500 toward the cost your training (paid directly to the school) with the purchase of a Piuma at http://icaro2000usa.com.

The terms and conditions are straightforward and listed at https://icaro2000usa.com/incentives-1/index.html. The current participating schools include Paradise Airsports at Wilotree Flight Park (https://paradiseairsports.com); Blue Sky Hang Gliding (http://www.blueskyhg.com); and Hang Glide Chicago (https://hangglidechicago.com).

If you do the math, this is not a money making venture for me, but rather an attempt to grow the base of pilots flying hang gliders and to try to get some of the smaller schools some trainees.

So much for the warnings on the first task. They got zeros instead. That's a big change.

Petr Benes down early. Alex Ploner out in the lead with Tom Weissenberger at 3:30 PM.

Alex out in front landed just before goal after a valiant effort. Tom Weissenberger wisely stayed back in the hills and worked slowly to get high enough to make it in way ahead of everyone else.

Carl Wallbank, and the two Czech's, Petr and Dan, came close to goal together, but Dan found a little something over the field that Carl and Petr landed in, and came in second.

Christian Ciech, after apparently flying a paraglider all day, just hung and hung in nothing getting further and further away from goal as Grant Crossingham, who was earlier with but below Christian, worked back in the hills even further downwind.

Then came four pilots who had been much further behind, Jonny, Corinna, Malcolm and Dave Mathews. Christian down 6.5 km out. Grant down. Dave down. Malcolm down. Jonny down a few feet from goal.

Corinna climbing near goal. Yoko climbing three kilometers further back. Corinna third into goal. Yoko lands near Jonny.

Petr Polách writes:

One of the worst conditions I have ever flown in. For the first time I am gonna fill in the task report with negative attitude. And I am not gonna fly in similar condition again.

At several places I had severe problems to keep the wing barely level. I couldn't even control my speed properly. It's only luck nobody got hurt. Peeople climbing severely, then falling five meters down in the gaggles. I only used full VG few times.

Can anyone explain how Thomas Weissenberger did the task so quickly?

So final thought: I like to push myself, but this was even beyond my personal limits.

8 Carl Wallbank Gbr Moyes RX 3.5 Pro 748
9 Malcolm Brown Gbr Wills Wing T2C 746
10 Alessandro Ploner Ita Icaro 2000 Laminar 745

Two pilots are missing from this scoring, Grant Crossingham and Alexander Barvinskiy, both of whom were near goal. Since the scoring is being done mostly through the use of Flymaster trackers, there appears to be some issue with GPS coordinates. These lack of published results also affect the other standings.

The team standings remain the same.

Nine rigid wing pilots in goal. Austria barely leads Germany in the rigid wing team standings, Wolfgang Kothgasser is the overall leader after winning the seventh task, and four out of seven tasks.

Strong SW winds were predicted this morning, so we left to Kovk launch earlier. We decided on task only on the east half of the valley - we prepared kind off two lap task, 93 km in length. Right now pilots are somwere at the end of lap one, we expect many pilots in goal in short time.

Task 4 has just finished, with most of the pilots in goal. It was a strong racing day with high average speed of the winner, Matja· Klemencic 65 km/h. Second was Arne Tanzer and Tom Weissenberger third.

We had an encouraging weather forecast today, so we set rather challenging task using the complete length of the Vipava valley, with a leg out to the flats. The pilots are now on the way to the third turnpoint and we will soon see if the task is doable.

Today's task was obviously doable! 14 pilots made to the goal, regardless of really tough conditions. Tom Weissenberger won the day by 6 minutes ahead of Franc Peternel, followed by Matja· Klemencic by 12 minutes. Overall Franc Peternel is in the lead ahead of Tom Weissenberger and Balazs Ujhelyi. Tomorrow is last day of the competition, we are expecting another good day to finish the event in style.

Euros are almost worthless

December 29, 2016, 8:19:05 EST

Euros are almost worthless

Therefore Laminars are cheap in the US

Icaro 2000

Urs Kellenberger <<urs>> writes:

The Euro is at its lowest point in 15 years. That means Icaro gliders are less than their competitors.

€7377 for the basic topless Laminar = $7672
€3270 for the curved tip RX single surface = $3400.
Add average shipping cost at about $800 per glider.

I'm in SF Bay area/ Silicon Valley

You'll find the gliders here:

http://www.icaro2000.com/Products/Hanggliders/Laminar/Laminar.htm

http://www.icaro2000.com/Products/Hanggliders/RX2/RX2.htm

If you check their direct on-line prices, not going through an authorized dealer, you'll find that they are listed at a much higher price:

http://shop.icaro2000.com/Catalog/xx/801/Laminar

Previously I was able to compare Moyes USA and Wills Wing prices on line as there isn't a difference between their on-line prices and the standard dealers sales prices for those two firms. Icaro has a different policy and allows direct sales. Urs has been the US Icaro dealer for ten years.

Laminar and Laminar Z9 hang gliders This safety notice applies to all topless hang gliders manufactured by Icaro 2000, from January 2012 to August 2015, in other words from registration numbers 9062 up until 9557, regardless of the type of crossbar fitted. It could also apply to hang gliders which, in the same period of time, have been subject to service or repair operations in which one or both of the "crossbar centre bolts" was replaced. The problem regards the central crossbar bolts, 90 mm in length, whose function is to hold the crossbar bushes on the H-shaped central block.

After a report regarding a problem that occurred for the owner of a Laminar, it has been found that some of the above-mentioned bolts may have not been made according to the design drawings that we supplied to the manufacturer. Unfortunately the problem is due to the fact that the supplier modified the construction of the bolts independently and without our knowledge, without incorporating the necessary quality control checks and without informing Icaro 2000. Icaro 2000 is intensely sorry for this problem and will do its utmost to supply all pilots concerned with the new bolts.

Icaro MastR: Spiral dive w/o recovery - batten clips opened

The plastic batten clips (produced by Airborne and used by many other hang gliding manufacturers) of an Icaro 2000 MastR (size M) hang glider with Dacron sail cloth opened after the pilot steered into a steep banked downward turn. The glider then entered a stable steep spiral dive with the inside wing billowing considerably more than the outer wing. The experienced pilot could not end the spiral dive.

The pilot was lucky to survive, although with serious injuries.

The incident happened one and a half years ago in southern Germany (Rauschberg) on October 26th, 2013.

Recently the German DHV asked a test pilot (Tim Grabowski, employed by the rigid wing manufacturer A.I.R.) to perform a test flight in a MastR. Tim also didn’t succeed in recovering from the spiral dive after the inboard clips (1-5) opened. He was lucky to deploy his reserve just in time close to the ground.

Two accident investigation reports issued by the DHV (Klaus Tänzler) blaming solely the pilot have been silently withdrawn from the DHV website.

The DHV then issued a warning urging pilots to inspect their plastic batten clips, but so far it is reluctant to publish the video of the DHV test flight (from what I heard though, things get out of control very rapidly with an even worse spiral dive).

I asked Icaro 2000 (Manfred Ruhmer) for an official statement on these incidents, but so far only received answers not meant to be made publicly available.

Video of the original accident: https://vimeo.com/106099298

DHV-warning (March 12, 2015): http://www.dhv.de/db1/source/technicdatareportnotes.php?lang=de&item=233

Questions:

Have any similar incidents been reported elsewhere? Can failing batten clips lead to a severe or even catastrophic loss of controllability? Is the USHPA familiar with the problem and have they been informed by the German DHV? Does the design of the MastR differ from other hang gliding designs making them more susceptible for batten clips to fail with subsequent severe loss of controllability?

Christian's January 9th email message to Mark Clark

Christian Ciech|Icaro 2000|Mark Clark

Christian Ciech («mailto:christian») writes:

At the moment we don't have a dealer in the USA and you can by the glider directly from us. For this reasons we can apply a 10% of discount.

The price in dollars depends from the exchange rate of the moment. Today the exchange rate is 1 euro / 1.1828 $ and so the price of a Laminar in the standard configuration would be $6390 without discount, that means you would pay it $5750.

Following the options (in the order I suggest them) and the prices (in euro) of them:

In Euros:

Laminar: 5400
Carbon Battens: 540
MR A-frame Alu: 540
Round carbon xbar: 825
Technora sail: 470
Carbon Leading edge: 895
Wingtips: 170
Leading edge stiffeners short/long: 165/205

If I have to suggest a minimum options set-up to enhancing performance, handling and durability of the glider, I will suggest a glider set as follows:

Laminar
Dacron Sail (the most durable fabric)
Carbon Battens
MR A-frame Alu
Round xbar

Following a description of the options:

Due to their major stiffness, the carbon battens allow us to get the best possible setting of sprogs and dihedral. This gives to the glider better performance and better coordination.

The MR A-frame is more aerodynamically clean and it enhance the performance of the glider. It is available with two downtube length for different pilot height (not for all sizes).

The new round carbon xbar is stronger and lighter of the previous one and it reduces the weight of the glider by nearly 1.5 kg compared with the standard version. That enhance the handling of the glider.

These are the most important options.

Then, if you like, you can add any other option. Following you can find them in order of importance:

Technora sail
Carbon leading edge or Outer carbon LE only
Wingtips
Leading edge stiffeners short

The Technora sail offers low elongation characteristics with minimum weight. That means better performance but still a good handling.

The carbon leading edges are lighter (1.2 kg lighter) and stiffer than the aluminum version. They are one of the first option I would suggest but, before to choose them, a pilot should consider that they are more difficult to check in case of crash. The aluminum inner LE and outer carbon LE combination (about 550 grams lighter) can be a good compromise to reduce the price, the risk of damages and the weight of the glider, where grams are more important.

The wingtips offer an important reduction of the wing vortices increasing the low-medium speed performance. They increase the climb ratio and the glide ratio at low-medium speed.

The carbon insert reduce the deformation of the leading edge profile at speed over 70 km/h and it can be important in competition.

The list Christian gives above totals to $10,446 assuming Euro at 1.16.

A price comparison

A price comparison

The Euro is down and the dollar is up

Icaro 2000|Quest Air|Wills Wing T2C

Urs Kellenberger sent me his new Icaro pricing on Friday so I thought I would go back and do a little price comparison against the American standard candles, the Wills Wing T2 and T2C with all the options (that I am aware of).

Euro = $1.16

http://willswing.com/prod2.asp?theClass=hg&theModel=T2

Wills Wing T2 standard package: $6975.

http://shop.icaro2000.com/CatPricePDF/20/0/

Icaro Z9 Basic: $7372

Aluminum downtubes and aluminum speedbar: $627

A total of $7999.

Icaro offers an option of a set of round cross bar tubes to replace the carbon square cross bar tubes. It is lighter. The T2 comes with round cross bar tubes. If we include the price of the round cross bar tubes at $1007 we get a total of $9006.

Custom colors are included with the T2 (and T2C). Icaro appears to charge $142.

http://willswing.com/prod2.asp?theClass=hg&theModel=T2

Wills Wing T2C standard package: $8785.

Upgrade to UVODL04 (Technora): $375

Carbon keel stinger: $270

Keel Fairing - Rear Wire Junction: $90

Total: $9520

http://shop.icaro2000.com/CatPricePDF/20/0/

Option prices taken from the document linked to above and reduced by the ratio of 6355/7760. That is the price that Urs is offering the Basic Z9 at in the US as the numerator and price quoted in the document above in the denominator which may for may not include a 22% VAT.

Icaro Z9 Basic: $7372

Aluminum downtubes and MR carbon speedbar: $665

Crossbar light (round tube instead of square heavier one): $1007

Carbon Leading edge tubes (replace aluminum leading edges, full - Wills Wing only provides carbon outboard leading edges with aluminum inners): $1092

Tecnora Sail: $575

Leading edge stiffeners long: $252

Total: $10,963

The documentation for the options can be found here: http://icaro2000.com/Products/Hanggliders/Laminar/Laminar.htm. I don't have a price on a carbon stinger for the Z9 nor for a keel fairing. Nor prices on wing tips for the T2C. I have not included wing tips on either model.

Wills uses the thicker 12 mm aluminum battens that are claimed to be 20% stiffer and 20% lighter than 10 mm battens (I haven't included carbon battens in the Z9 price). They are included in the price of the T2 and the T2C. It appears Icaro uses 10 mm battens and has an option for carbon ones.

I'll have more on this in the next issue.

The Swiss Central Bank starts an avalanche

finance|Icaro 2000

Europe is drowning in its own dysfunction as Germany promotes austerity, which is exactly the wrong medicine for what ails the continent. It just may be the case that the Greeks find their way to the exit door. And it is this prospect that has brought us to the place where gliders from Italy are affordable, if purchased from their US distributor.

The Laminar price list found here: http://shop.icaro2000.com/CatPricePDF/20/0/ shows direct from Icaro prices to be much different from the prices from Urs shown below. For example, this document shows the Laminar Basic at 7780 Euros. But if you scroll back in that document you'll see that VAT (22 percent?) is perhaps (it is unclear) included in that price despite a statement here that these prices are applicable world wide.

Urs Kellenberger <<urs>> writes:

Due to the falling Euro, the cost of the Icaro gliders has dropped dramatically. The current price of a Euro is under $1.16. That would make the topless Z9 about $7372!

Technora Threads

Tue, Jul 15 2014, 7:15:26 am MDT

See through top sails

Aeronautic Innovation Rühle & Co GmbH|Facebook|Icaro 2000|Steven "Steve" Pearson|Wills Wing T2C

In the last few years hang glider manufacturers have offered topless gliders with see through/clear sails led by the example from Wills Wing (at least it appears that way to me). These gliders use laminated sailcloth with black Technora threads. Wills Wing offers two laminates: UVODL06 and UVODL04, both with UV films. Wills Wing writes:

Technora is three times stronger than polyester fiber.

Carbon reinforcing tape is used with UVODL04 to provide additional strength and resistance to stretch along the major tension lines. UVODL04 is slightly less expensive than UVODL06 but the cost and application of carbon tape make the UVODL04 sail more expensive. Generally results in lighter, quicker handling. Available only on the T2C.

http://www.teijinaramid.com/aramids/technora/technora-filament-yarn-black/

Steve Pearson writes about these laminates:

UVODL04 is 135 grams/m^2 or 3.2 oz./sailmaker's yard (36 in x 28.5 inches) . That includes two layers of 0.75 mil film, 400d Technora scim, 750d Technora X-ply, and adhesive.

UV ODL06 is 165 grams/m^2 or 3.9 oz./sailmaker's yard. That includes two layers of 0.75 mil film, 750d Technora scim, 750d Technora X-ply, and adhesive. Heavier scrim yarns make it harder to see though.

The clear appearance is the natural condition of polyester film when used with a clear adhesive. If one used a colored adhesive, it would be opaque like our UVPT white and UVX15 (http://willswing.com/features/sailcloth.asp). If I used grey film, like UVPT grey, it would be somewhat translucent, but not as clear.

The other reason that lightweight Technora laminates are clear is that you need much less Technora fiber (smaller, denser yarns) to achieve the required structural design parameters. The sparse fiber matrix leaves more clear film exposed.

Technora sails have become quite popular despite the fact that they are more expensive. Is it the bling factor or how the gliders handle or both?

The Wills Wing T2C:

UVODL04 with UVODL06 leading edge. Notice the additional lines/threads of Technora.

The Icaro 2000 Laminar:

The AIR VR:

The Aero Combat:

The Moyes Litespeed:

The Moyes Litespeed is the latest glider to use the clear Technora laminate. The Litespeed is the only glider not to have the clear Technora laminate go all the way to the trailing edge. It is not clear from the Moyes web site what sailcloth is used for the trailing edge.

I am only able to find detailed descriptions of sailcloth material at the Wills Wing web site. I don't find any other hang gliding manufacturer providing this level of information about the sailcloth that they use. If I could find such information I wouldn't have to rely so heavily on the Wills Wing site. If you have a link to such information I would be happy to publish it.

I don't even have a detailed description of the other Technora laminates used by other hang glider manufacturers. Even the sailcloth manufacturer web sites are bereft of useful information.

http://willswing.com/features/sailcloth.asp.

A key issue is that UVODL06 and UVODL04 require a special order and a minimum order, unlike ODL04 and ODL06. In addition, UVODL04 and UVODL06 are a bit more expensive. The minimum order is 1000 meters. Perhaps this is another area where hang glider manufacturers could agree to a joint purchase, now that this material is so popular.

How come we haven't hear any gossip regarding the Icaro's tip definition that they used on Forbes? A few friends have sent me some pictures of what seems like a "winglet" for elliptical wings, that the Icaro pilots attached to their machines back then.

It seems to elongate the aspect ratio, and project a more aggressive tip but probably with a little less induced vortices?

It looks like a "do-able" thing for any elliptic wing.

As I recall it wasn't attached but part of the sail material. It's been around for at least a couple of years.

The flight and task.

Cloud base was below launch as it had been most of the day as we drove up. The temperature dropped to 16 degree Celsius by the time we got to launch. It looked like a leisurely setup was in process.

I set up and then went around talking to various folks. Heather scowled at me from a distance. Most everyone was in a buoyant mood after two days of not flying and it looked like we would be flying. We just had to wait for the cloud base to lift.

The pilot briefing was postponed twice to 1 PM. The task and safety committee meeting was dragging on. As the cloud base lifted a cu-nimb formed behind launch. Would the cloud base be too low or would the lift be too powerful?

The task committee called an 81 km task up and down the range, with the last turnpoint out where I had recommended, after  a few days previously they put the northern turnpoint back over unlandable territory. It was great to see that after thirty pilots claiming that that turnpoint placement was unsafe, the meet director, Franco Rinaldi, insisted that they not use it for this task.

I decided to launch early. We had an hour and a half before the start gate. I went up to the front of the line but let a couple of pilots get in front of me. When Alex Ploner decided to go in front, I decided to launch after him. I got to miss all the later hassles at launch.

The wind was from the north northwest, but it was coming up the south west face very lightly. You could see the cloud shadows racing crosswise to the launch from clouds only two thousand over launch. I went further down the hill to launch, and had a nice long run and a sweet launch into light lift. There were already pilots turning out in front of me.

I worked my way south as we had thirteen to fourteen kilometers to go to get to the edge of the five kilometer start cylinder. There was lift all along the way to cloud base, and I had to pull in hard at one spot to be sure to stay under 6,000'. When we got south far enough along the ridge we were away from the air space so we could relax and not worry about it.

Pilots were flying on the ridge within the five kilometer start cylinder then coming back to six or seven kilometers out and getting back to cloud base at about 6,500'. We were just waiting around, but to our north there was a cu-nimb and rain was dropping 10 km north of launch. It would later rain on launch. We had a turnpoint back at launch.

The cu-nimb built as we waited just outside the start cylinder. Soon we were on the last cu's on the edge of the cu-nimb. It had suppressed all the other cu's closer to it. The minutes were ticking down as we waited to head south which was free of cu-nimb activity. Another cu-nimb formed east of launch and it was dropping rain also.

The safety committee was busy on the radio discussing stopping the task. It was very close. It could have gone either way. But the south looked good and the cu-nimb was still to our north. Lots of pilots were very concerned that they would soon be sucked up by the approaching cu-nimb.

I headed back into the hills two kilometers outside the start cylinder to get back to cloud base but at about eight minutes before the start window opened I noticed that a couple of pilots were getting up upwind further out into the valley and a bit closer to the start cylinder. I pushed out up wind, got into the lift and began to climb in a perfect location, right at the edge of the start circle. In fact a quarter of each circle that I did was in the start cylinder.

My timing could not have been more perfect. I was right on the start cylinder climbing at an average of 500 fpm and just as I got to cloud base at 6,800', the start window opened. I was just outside the start cylinder and went in sixteen seconds after the start window opened at cloud base.

As I raced ahead I saw Jonny just to my left and Manfred just to my right. We had all just been at cloud base.

We found a little bit of lift with Dustin at nine kilometers from the edge of the start cylinder after getting the first turnpoint at the center of the five kilometer start cylinder and then further down the course toward a mountain side five kilometers. Jonny was finding a slightly better line than me and out gliding me and everyone else. Jonny, Dustin and Manfred with me just below them came into the hill side and found 400 fpm. Everyone else was behind and below.

We showed everyone the lift and climbed up above the hillside and were working our way to cloud base. The two Jeff's with a dozen other pilots had stopped behind us, but I told them what was ahead. They came over and found 800 fpm 400 feet south of our 400 fpm and we flew over to the top of them.

At cloud base at 7,500' it was a quick run a few kilometers to the south to get the second turnpoint and then head north. I had lost a few spots but was running well in the top ten. We came back near to the spot where we got up previously, but I didn't see any good lift so kept going. There were plenty of markers coming the other way out ahead.

I could see out in front of me that the whole valley was dark, shaded by the cloud cover. The cu-nimb by launch was gone or would soon be. There was now rain on the west side of the valley to my left. It didn't look like there would be much lift along the western facing flanks of the eastern hillsides of the valley, with all the shading.

I headed a couple of kilometers further west than most of the leading pilots going for a dark isolated cu that I saw a pilot who was heading south turning under. This looked like the last cu before the uniform dark sky and shaded ground. I figured that getting high under that cloud might be a good idea because we might not make it to goal.

I climbed to 7,000' and then headed up the range. There were lots of pilots below me as I passed them and just kept gliding looking for some lift. I figured with it so dark I would have to take much weaker climbs. My next climb averaged 150 fpm.

The lift was weak along the ridge line in the dark, but I did find spots of 150-200 fpm. I worked my way north finding lift here and there and gliding in zero sink when I didn't find lift. I had gliders around to help spot the lift.

The sun came out near the launch and the lift got much better. The next turnpoint was the launch and I found 300 fpm by the towers just before launch and climbed to 5700'. I was just outside airspace. I could see on my 6030 that I had goal made but just barely through the next turnpoint. I went on glide along the ridge tops toward the cemetery just out in the valley. As I got close to the turnpoint I could see the pilots in the lead gaggle a ways below on final glide.

I hit the turnpoint, when back to the ridge line, now below the top and hugged the hillside most of the way going back to goal at the standard LZ in Sigillo. It was great to finally make it into goal at this contest. 98 pilots joined me.

After the second and furthest south turnpoint Dustin flew straight for over thirty kilometers hoping to find one good thermal to get him to goal. He landed at goal without making the last turnpoint.

Jeff O'Brien outraced Manfred and Christian to win the day. That makes two days out of four that Americans won the day. Jeff Shapiro was in sixteenth.

Another great task up and down the range with a little kicker that has been deemed unsafe as there were few if any good landing areas near the second turnpoint. The forecast was for southwest winds at six knots at 4,000' with moderate lift to 6,000' to 7,000'. There were supposed to be some cu's and there were a few scattered here and there, but not as many as the day before, when the forecast was for none.

We launched from the main Montecucco launch facing southwest. The launch conditions were again superb and there was lift out front right away so it was easy to get up a little ways at least and then go searching for better. I was quickly able to climb to 5,800' and then head south to get to the edge of the start cylinder which was twelve kilometers from the launch.

Getting there was a bit difficult and getting in place in time was a chore. None of us (US team) were ready by the 2 PM first start clock which turned out to be a mistake as the first eighteen pilots in took the first start clock. We should have launched earlier and not waited for half an hour before suiting up and then launching with only a half hour before the first start time.

Going south down the ridge was a piece of cake. When we got to the end we raced out into the valley to get the turnpoint thirty eight kilometers south of launch, then raced back to the ridge to find the lift. Like yesterday it was weak once again at the hill side on the return and we had to hang on in light lift for a pretty long time to get back up. Once up it was racing back to the north to try to get within striking distance of the fast guys.

Julia came in under me after the turnpoint and I flew with her the rest of the way almost back to the launch, thirty six kilometers. She is easy to spot with little outlined rabbits on the top of her sail.

Dustin got on the radio and said that the turnpoint was in an unlandable canyon so get high before going over to it. Later Shapiro got on the radio and said that he was low in front of a ridge west of the turnpoint. I was back at launch and working my way up Montecucco itself. It had good lift but I was worried about being under airspace (I 'wasn't). I pulled out at 5,850' and headed north toward the turnpoint. Shapirio said that he was up and going for the turnpoint.

I headed north keeping the valley on my left side and hoping that I wouldn't lose too much height before jumping over to the turnpoint to the northeast. I didn't get any lift and was not willing to go back to the turnpoint with no landing areas beneath me. I went to the same ridge that Shapiro climbed up at but it was fifteen minutes later and the lift had died.

Numerous pilots complained that the task was unsafe due to the call for the turnpoint in unlandable area. Of course, if you found lift on the mountain side which was the turnpoint, then it was no problem.

Manfred won again with Alex second and Elio third. See the results for the second task at the official web site.

Icaro 2000⁣ downtubes - an optical delusion »

Wed, Jul 28 2010, 11:25:17 am MDT

Does my bronze anodizing make me look fat?

Icaro 2000|Wills Wing T2C

I wrote earlier here: "Wide down tubes made for a very comfortable and solid feel when hoisted up on my shoulders. This is important if you want to have a strong launch in light wind conditions. I throw my shoulders back, stand straight, and rotate the glider nose down pivoting on my shoulders. The strong pivot point provided by the wide downtubes makes this easy and safe."

Well, it turns out that the Icaro downtubes are the same width as the Wills Wing Slipstream downtubes. I measured them both at the goal at Feltre. I also lifted up a Wills Wing T2C at the goal and it felt just the same as the Icaro 2000 Laminar Z9 13.7 on my shoulders. A good strong pivot point.

I first "noticed" the "fat" downtubes on the Z9 back at the 2009 World Championships in Laragne. I really thought that they were wider than the ones on the Wills Wing gliders. Last week, when I picked up the glider that I am trading for an Icaro 2000 ad in the Oz Report, I again noticed the fat down tubes.

But it was all a delusion on my part. When I made the effort to actually measure them they were the same as the Wills Wing Slipstream (not Litestream) down tubes. They just looked wider (cord wise) to me.

The Z9 continues to impress me as an excellent glider. I got a chance to fly again on Wednesday for a couple of hours flying out over the flats as well as on the hill side at Montegrappa and the glider was very responsive. I had to climb up from low over a church after one of my excursions out into the flats and the glider twirled nicely next to the hillside never giving me the feeling that I couldn't control it.

I had a much better landing than on the first flight in zero wind, but still it wasn't perfect as I dropped to my knees. I would say that either I haven't learned the secret yet or it is more difficult to get the timing right than the Wills Wing T2C 144 or the Northwing Freedom 170 which are the two gliders that I have flown recently. I'll work on it today.

Worked on it on Thursday. Flared early because I was heading for corn, should have killed the corn, as it was only two feet high. Okay landing but my back is sore.

I hadn't flown a Icaro 2000 Laminar topless glider since 1997. Things have improved quite a bit since then. I had my first chance to check out the new Z9 with my first flight at Grappa Mountain on Tuesday.

The first thing I noticed was that the wide down tubes made for a very comfortable and solid feel when hoisted up on my shoulders. This is important if you want to have a strong launch in light wind conditions. I throw my shoulders back, stand straight, and rotate the glider nose down pivoting on my shoulders. The strong pivot point provided by the wide downtubes makes this easy and safe.

The second thing I noticed was how easy the glider was to turn and fly in the light conditions just off launch. I was the first to launch getting help from Heinz, a Swiss pilot, and a German pilot, Mathias, who's wife provided my ride to the top. The winds were light on launch, so the help was not necessary but always appreciated.

The restaurant at the launch is out of business, but people do park there and they can provide assistance if you like.

I went right off launch and found lift just before the paraglider launch a few hundred meters to the west. The lift started at 100 fpm but it wasn't long before it was 400 fpm. I climbed from 2,800' to 4,300' drifting back a little over the hill side.

The glider felt stable and responsive, so unlike the model from so many years ago. It was a joy to fly and I felt completely secure in it.

I flew up and down the ridge line for the next two hours and the glider was again responsive and stable. The thermals were for the most part light and small, although every now and then I found 400 fpm in tight thermals. The flying was easy.

There were plenty of cu's over the mountain, and a few out over the flats. I flew out to investigate but didn't find much away from the hill side. The areas of lift were quite small no matter where I went and we pilots were up and down during our flights.

After a couple of hours, I brought it in to land and the Z9 was rock steady on the approach. The wind was ninety degrees to the LZ, but the approach is to go down the LZ and then turn into the wind and land at the field next to it. I came in at 45 degrees (as the wind was normally coming from the south not the east) and then landed in the next field.

I mistimed the landing a bit flaring a little too early letting the control frame down, so I don't have the timing quite right yet on the glider. I'll have a few days to work on that here. The LZ is huge with the connecting fields which you can land in without a problem.

On Saturday we, Franco Rinaldi, Nuccia, Belinda and I visited the Icaro 2000 factory and the Club Icaro LZ. I was there to take delivery of a glider for use at the pre-Worlds and to see the LZ. The weather conditions were not perfect for a flight.

See here. Pictures from Curt Warren's visit here.

You can see the Icaro factory here.

The flying site is just down the road a short distance from the factory. It has a nice club house with a restaurant and bar. The LZ is huge.

We drove from Canzo, Italy which is near Lake Como to the the factory in about an hour and a half. We had originally arrived on Wednesday, last week in Zurich and driven to Canzo during the day. The factory is basically in northern Italy in the mountains.

Mt. Ikeda Cup 2009 had been held in Gifu, Japan from 30th Jul to 2nd Aug. 75 Japanese pilots flew the comp, and Manfred Ruhmer participated in as well. ("Birds Eye View", Japanese Icaro 2000 dealer, invited him. He stayed in Japan for three weeks.)

Unfortunately, the conditions were not good due to the rain front hovering around. We could fly on only one poor day and one bomb-out day. Even in such poor conditions, Manfred won the race. Result can be found here: http://7.pro.tok2.com/~kenji55000/ikeda2009/result/total.html.

I built a lot of expectation into my head having accomplished this result compared to 117 other pilots flying in the pre-Worlds. I felt good about flying in Laragne and was quite happy with my result (sixteenth in the line of losers). Scott Barrett won the pre-Worlds and was obviously elated.

Gordon Rigg felt that the earth was some how kicked off its axis that I had finished ahead of him at the pre-Worlds. He was completely incensed and let me know about it. Attila, the World Champion fell down when he should have stayed up.

Jonny was very close to Alex and won a day. Zac could have easily come in third and I feel partially responsible for him losing a hundred points on the second to last day. When we were all together (with Jonny also) on the ridge southwest of Aspres climbing slowly five minutes before the second start window almost at cloud base, I mentioned on the radio that if we ran out of time and lift before the start we should go west to the clouds and mountain over there. This suggestion was perhaps too influential because that is what Zippy did right after I made the suggestion. It really wasn't time to make this move, and he lost 500' to 1000' on us at the start which was a handicap that kept him behind the whole way.

Zac, who was added to the team as the fifth member when registration was again opened, turned in the best performance by an American only missing goal on the two days when the task was stopped.

Gordon Rigg was restored to his rightful place and the world got back on its axis. You might remember that Gordon was denied a place on the British team then got back on with Robin Hamilton couldn't make it to the Worlds. He then out performed all his teammates as well as being on the task committee. I'm sure that he feels quite vindicated.

Dustin Martin flew well and consistently and was rewarded with a seventh place finish. Two Americans in the top ten, which hasn't happened since the Worlds at the Owens Valley. The US team had its best finish since then also.

Manfred was so far ahead in points to most of the field that when he bombed out on the last day, he only dropped to tenth.

Christian Ciech was at one point in the lead having captured the lead from Manfred. Then he made a crucial error going back to restart on a day that was stopped before the task was ended. This cost him big time. He was likewise not near goal on the second to last day when the task was stopped. He looked quite crestfallen after these events but tried to be supportive in his actions if not his expression for his former student and friend Alex Ploner, and for the whole Italian team.

Carl Wallbank, after a poor landing near me on the second to last day when we were all just trying to make it over the ridge at Mison, had forty stitches in his leg and a broken pinky. He then flew the last day and made goal. He was able to launch off the steep north side. He before and later said that he likely wouldn't have launched at all from the shallow south side.

Mario Alonzi was ranked number one quite a few times in the last year, but in his home country against the best in the World he was twentieth.

Attila Bertok landed short a few times, and was unable to defend his crown as World Champion, to the disappointment of the Hungarian team. He finished about like he did last year.

Bruce Kavanaugh placed third on the British team after being added as the fifth pilot. The British team won the last World Championship in Big Spring, Texas but finished behind the US here in France.

Jeff O'Brien won the first day and was the early leader, but didn't keep up the pace and dropped back after taking later start times on days that he should have gone with the big gaggle, then hitting the no fly zone, and not making it to goal on the last day. He also just missed getting to goal on the previous day to be in ahead of the stop time.

Gerolf Heinrichs and Robert Reisinger, perpetual top finishers (but not quite right at the top) were way down below their and our expectations. Gerolf got not too far on the last two days, but finished well on others, except for getting stuck on one day and coming to goal fortieth.

Scott Barrett finished well off the pace of his previous year's efforts, in spite of using smart tactics (going around the turnpoint when we went west of Pic de Bure) which won him the pre-Worlds.

Christian Voiblet finished second on one day behind Christian Ciech when he took the lead from Manfred, but didn't get far on other days and landed short on the final day.

Blay, inspite of doing very well in Australia and often doing better than Jonny apparently didn't fly one day (I don't know the reason) and in general did not do as well as expected after beating Jonny in the Spanish nationals.

Gary Wirdham landed early at Camping Montéglin on the last day after feeling that the air conditions were too rough.

Jeff Shapiro did not do as well as he expected getting some poor late starts and dropping out in weak conditions on a couple of days and being held up on launch one day. He didn't improve his relative performance over his efforts at the pre-Worlds. I'm quite sure that he feels he has no one to blame but himself.

Julia was the top placing women. She destroyed her first glider and then flew another one. She could use help with landing technique, although it may also be associated with the problem of being relatively short and light in hang gliders that are not made for such people if they wish to pass the DHV certification.

Me, I dropped like a stone, essentially due to very poor decision making related to strong emotions that nudge me in the wrong direction. The emotions overcome any of my limited abilities to cogitate in stressful situations. Deep breathing might help. I might go into more details later if I think that they will be of any use to the reader in dealing with their own situations. We'll see.

Oleg Bondarchuck was suffering from back problems.

The relatively high prices for rigid wing hang gliders

Rigid wings

They are made in Europe, eastern Europe, and the Ukraine

From Aeros USA at http://www.flyaeros.com/ :

Phantom - Rigid Wing Retail
Phantom Basic (ww Uprights, Alu Round Speedbar) $14,138
Phantom Standard (ww Uprights, Carbon Airfoil Speedbar) $14,355
Phantom Super (superfinish Le, Ww Uprights And Speedbar) $15,791

Original version found at AIR USA at http://a-i-r-usa.com/content.asp?ID=4381:

Atos November 15, 2007 Msrp
Gliders Msrp-Euro's In Current Dollars
A-Vn Alu €10,500.00 $15,750.00

A-Vs Carbon €11,630.00 $17,445.00
A-Vx Carbon €13,220.00 $19,830.00

The prices are FOB Germany and so crating and freight to the US and destination are in addition Prices in USD are firm for the Euro trading below 1.50 to the US Dollar - please confirm.

If I adjust the AIR USA prices that I show above for the Euro at $1.54 (as the prices given at the AIR USA web site only are good with the euro up to $1.50), I get:

A-Vn Alu €10,500.00 $16,170.00
A-Vn Carbon €11,630.00 $17,910.20
A-Vr Carbon €13,780.00 $21,221.20
A-VQ Carbon €13,480.00 $20,759.20
A-Vs Alu €10,500.00 $16,170.00
A-Vs Carbon €11,630.00 $17,910.20
A-Vx Carbon €13,220.00 $20,358.80

This, of course, is just my guess at what the prices might be if they were adjusted to the Euro/dollar exchange rate. Within the last two weeks the Euro was as high as $1.59.

The MSRP Euros column above matches except in two cases the AIR (manufacturer's suggested retail prices) found here: http://www.a-i-r.de/eng/air_04e.php?kat=110&gp=4&stl=Models in the overview. AIR's MSRP prices in Euros include VAT (17.5%) which is only charged in Europe and doesn't apply to non European sales.

The differences are seen in the list prices for the VR and the VQ. AIR lists the VQ at 13,850, while Jim lists it at 13,480 Euros. And Felix lists the VR at 14,050, while AIR USA lists it at 13,780 Euros.

The MSRP Euro prices listed on AIR USA web site can just be multiplied by 1.50 to get the US prices on the AIR USA web site. As except in two cases where there are relatively minor differences, the MSRP Euro prices listed on the AIR USA web site match the listed Euro prices on the AIR web site, which include VAT (which is not charged in the US), this makes it appear as though the US prices, in some manner, includes an equivalent of the VAT, which goes to the dealer and/or distributor, and not the government.

This doesn't seem to be the case, for example, with Icaro, which lists prices excluding VAT for sales outside of Europe. http://www.Icaro2000.com/Products/Hanggliders/Z9/Z9.htm#6.

AIR USA, the US distributor for AIR, is, as stated on the AIR web site, free to list any pricing that it feels is appropriate for its market and its costs.

Carbon sprogs in the "basic" Z9.

carbon-graphite|Icaro 2000|Icaro Z9|sprogs

http://www.icaro2000.com/Products/Hanggliders/Z9/Z9.htm

The "basic" Icaro Z9 comes with carbon fiber sprogs. They are an $500 option on the Moyes RS. I don't see them as options on any of the other gliders. Readers can, if they wish, adjust the price of the Z9 accordingly.

I apologize for not reporting that Urs Kellenberger is a US dealer for Icaro. At the time I didn't consider listed dealers as dealers if they didn't have web pages. There was no listed web page for him on the Icaro web site: http://www.icaro2000.com/Dealers/US.htm, so I missed him. Sorry.

Urs pointed out the "problem" with the carbon sprogs, making for a less than perfect comparison. Thanks for that. He also mistakenly accused me of including VAT in the Icaro price, but later admitted his error (if somewhat grudgingly).

I now fly a Styl+ from Ulteam/Icaro. It is excellent easy glider with mast. It weighs 29 kg and is easy to set up (somewhat similar to an Icaro 2000 Orbiter with a few added tricks by Xavier Verges of Ulteam in Grenoble). My back likes it, and, yes it is not as fast as the VR, even if the climb rate is really good.

Thierry Parcelier in his ATOS can turn around me and get up a little faster! Yes , it turns with muscles, not with spoilers! That being said, it was great to see the rigids at the Worlds, and you know the French like to think that US money can't buy everything (half true I guess).

New Icaro MastR prototype

MastR

The prototype is here in Florida for test flying.

Bob Lane|Icaro 2000

Here

Angelo and Flavio brought their new king posted advanced MastR prototype to Florida and Bob Lane got a chance to fly it. I asked him how he felt about it and he said that it flew very fast, like a topless glider. He said that there was a sweet spot for the VG position that he found for aerotowing that made it easy to tow, but that in general it was not as easy to tow as the Wills Wing U2 and the Aeros Discus.

He said that it thermaled great with no need for high or low siding as he just pushed out and held it in position. He was very impressed and thought that he had the highest level of performance in the king posted glider.

The sail is the same as the Z8 topless glider with two battens removed, according to Flavio Thebaldi.

The issue, of course, is cost. The Italian gliders are much more expensive than their Ukrainian or US competitors.

Angelo Crapanzano «angelo» at Icaro 2000 writes:

We are working very hard on the new Laminar 2006. As you can see from the picture of one of the 13.2 prototypes, the sail is extremely clean (I've done a lot of work to get uniform tensions).

The upper surface is practically perfect and the lower one only has some minor wrinkles close to the tip (we'll fix them easily on production). I must say I'm pretty much satisfied.

Handling is light and very precise; flying close to the ridge at low speed is not a stress and the controllability at tight VG is impressive. The 13.2 climbs really well and I like very much that, same pilot weight and despite the smaller surface, the Laminar 13.2 can thermal 3-4 km/h slower than last year's 13.7.

The Dacron sail version is practically ready for production: handles very well and is perfectly neutral in thermal. The Mylar competition version still has one small problem to solve: becomes over banked and tiring, even if controllable, at high bank angles. We already fixed it tuning the frame, but I would rather modify the sail cut.

I've no doubt we'll have soon an amazing glider

Learning to go cross country and play well with others

Icaro 2000|Jon "Jonny" Durand jnr

There are twenty five students here being herded around by top competition pilots. I headed off in the Icaro 2000 Relax with those being led by Jonny Durand as we flew northwest seventeen miles to Cheryl airport and then twenty miles due north to the Savanna airstrip located on interstate 75. We had 500 fpm at Quest with the east southeast wind at 10 mph.

The cu's were thin at 4,500' as forecast with a distinct inversion. The lift was better at Quest than what we found on the course. I was able to stay with the others to Cheryl, but then had to struggle a bit to get up from low. Jonny was with the rest of the students just north of Cheryl as they approached Lake Panasoffskee, just to the north of Cheryl:

The lake is surrounded by swamps. Later I headed up the west side of the lake and got a great view of the swamps that seemed to extend to the Gulf of Mexico (they don't).

The Flytec Clinic continues today.

The Wills Wing Attack Falcon

Tue, Apr 5 2005, 4:00:01 pm EDT

What a pleasure to fly.

cart|Icaro 2000|PG|US Nationals

I've been extolling the virtues of the Icaro 2000 Relax lately, but frankly I can't tell if there is a difference between it and the Wills Wing Attack Falcon that I flew today. I did fly the 195 (sq ft sail area) version today and I have been flying the 16 m (170 sq ft) Relax, and I could tell that the Falcon was a bigger glider (and more appropriately sized for me). But it was still a joy to fly, especially relative to the T2 (the glider I flew previous to it), which required that I bump it around to stay in the very light lift.

The T2 was quite a bit easier to tow that then Attack Falcon. For the Falcon I went with a three point towing system, using a V-bridle with a connection and weaklink at the keel. I had two barrel releases on my chest, just in case my spectra didn't get cleanly through the loop at the end of the V-bridle.

Even with the extra tow point off the keel, it was easier to tow the T2 than the Falcon. I towed only off the shoulders when I towed the T2 and the Relax, but I was concerned with the bigger Falcon, that it might be an unpleasant amount of work to tow it just off my shoulders (although I have towed Falcon 170's off my shoulders before).

I used a cart with a shorter keel cradle as the Falcon uses the 65 inch down tubes not the 68 inch ones used by the T2 154. The T2 144 I flew last night uses 65 inch down tubes and I used the carts with the higher keel cradle and they still worked fine. Steve, who was working the line when I flew the Falcon, mentioned that my nose seemed high, but that still seemed okay. I assume using the other cart would have been fine also.

I pinned off at 1,500' to circle with Andreas Olsen, who is going to be flying a T2 at the US Nationals, and a kingposted double surface glider. The lift was very light and I had to stay in whatever I could find. Slowly all seven of the other pilots in the air, almost all above me, descended and landed as I continued to hold onto the lightest of lift.

The Attack Falcon was a joy to turn. The slightest movement was all I needed to be able to guide the glider in the thermals and to stay with the broken and light lift. Whenever the lift turned on (it did get to 400 fpm at one point) I could roll the glider up on a tip and twirl around.

Down to 700' I was desperately holding on as I waited for the last two gliders to land. The lift improved and I drifted away to the west climbing slowly as they landed. By the time I got to 2,700' I decided that I might as well just stay with it as it would have been work to get back to Wallaby. Besides I was there to try to go 100 miles and take Malcolm's $1000.

I was only able to go 6.5 miles, but the flight was great fun. No other pilots flew until about 3 PM. I took off at noon and flew for an hour.

The Attack Falcon is a joy to fly, but, of course, you want to stay in the lift, as the glide is not much better than you will find on the highest performance paragliders. I could glide around and feel the lightest lift and turn quickly in anything. I felt completely comfortable in it and knew that I could land (in monkey bar position) anywhere.

A demo flight on the 144

Icaro 2000|Quest Air|Rob Kells|Steven "Steve" Pearson|US Nationals

I had an opportunity to take two demo flights on the new Wills Wing T2 144 this afternoon at Wallaby Ranch as a prelude to the Wills Wing Daze which starts tomorrow. I thoroughly enjoyed flying the new glider. The first thing I noticed was how easy it was to tow. With half VG I towed with no hands. The winds were light and it was 4 PM, but there were thermals and I later climbed to 4,000'. I was able to tow with one hand while zipping up the harness with the other, which I really appreciated. I have been towing the Icaro 2000 Relax, which as a single surface glider requires that I pull in a lot more and therefore it more difficult to tow off the shoulders (ironic, isn't it?).

I had spoken earlier with Steve Pearson and Rob Kells about the glider. The two T2 models (144 and 154) have the same sizes and planform as the previous Talons, but the air foil is much flatter. A quick comparison of Talon and T2 battens will show this. The top of the camber is in the same spot.

The VG is now a haul back mechanism as opposed to a cam mechanism at the outboard ends of the spars. The spar-leading edge junction has been redesigned and beefed up to add rigidity to the sprog connections. With more rigid and longer sprogs (due to increased double surface) the T2 has a better pitch curve than the Talon and the sprogs can be lowered for better high speed glide performance without reducing safety.

Steve and Rob are still working on the final tuning of the T2, although four of the gliders are down in Brazil being flown in the first meet of the Brazilian National series. Rob was concerned that mine might have too little bar pressure at full VG and high speeds (60 mph) so he asked me not to pull the VG on full and at the same time not fly fast. Actually I didn't go more than half VG and only 50 mph. The bar pressure seemed reasonably light at this configuration.

I had no problems thermaling the glider in steady lift and it was easy to keep it in the core. It flew straight with no desire to wing walk at higher speeds.

Later I flew in really light lift (50 fpm) that was broken up at about 900'. I had to continually bump the glider to get it to follow the lift, but my technique may have been completely off.  I did out climb a U2 type glider that started next to me.

I had two landings and unlike previous landings I've had with the Talon, they were smooth and uneventful with no tendency for the glider to drop one wing. I used my monkey bar technique and had no problem controlling the glider. Both landings where in about one mph head winds.

The T2 seems to be closer to the handling characteristics of the U2 than the Talon was. The top surface of the sail was very smooth both with the VG was off and when it was on. It looked like a fine glider.

I'll report more when I have a chance to fly it at greater length and after Steve and Rob have made further adjustments. We'll also have six or seven of them flying in the US Nationals in ten days at Quest Air. Steve and Rob said that they were serious about building up a competition team.

More Relaxing

The Florida classic weather.

Icaro 2000|Jamie Shelden|Jim Rooney|Ron Gleason|weather

Finally, the great weather has returned to Florida with a south wind day at about 15 mph and light lift. We waited until the cu's were forming well over the field at about 1 PM before taking off. It was a slow climb just on the north side of Quest as Ron Gleason, who took off earlier in his AIR ATOS V, came in under me in the Icaro 2000 Relax. I was just sticking in whatever lift I could find in order to get high enough to be able to get across the swamps to the north of highway 50.

To stay up I had to find lift quickly while the three rigid wings around me could go off on fruitless searches, only to come back to the lift I had found. Ron finally hooked a thermal that the two rigids and I couldn't find and got ahead of us. I had to dive in under him at his next thermal to climb at 400 fpm from 900'. The others joined me.

The air was just great. So smooth even with the strong wind out of the south. Nice little cu's at 4,000'. Good spacing. Slow climbs, but no turbulence.

At about 20 miles out I made a mistake thinking that I had to cross from one cloud street to another to the west from the swamp west of Leesburg to just east of Wildwood on highway 301. Ron had reported good lift there and it looked possible to make it. Paul on the ATOS VX was now just ahead of Jim Rooney (on a Talon) and I. Jamie on the ESC had landed.

We crossed and got under the clouds and under Paul but I was down under 900' and didn't find the lift that we needed to get up and out. Better would have been to have waited until we absolutely needed to cross to the west to avoid the upcoming lake. The lift would have been better by then.

Looks like more good weather on its way for the Wills Wing Demo Days and the US Nationals (pre-Worlds).

Relaxing

Thu, Mar 31 2005, 3:00:02 am EST

The lift was sweet today in Florida.

Icaro 2000|weather

I've been here for over a month, and not really had a chance to fly. Finally the weather started cooperating, and today we had light west winds with no cu's, but 200 fpm lift at times to 3,300'. I was flying the Icaro 2000 Relax, the sweetest flying glider that there is, bar none. I do have to pull in quite a ways to tow it off my shoulders, but other than that it is easy to tow.

Some folks flew yesterday, but there was too much wind for me, in the Relax, and I didn't want to go up in ratty thermals. I was glad I waited until today.

It had been two months since last I flew, and I was nervous about every detail, but once I got going it was perfect. I just got my Matrix harness back from Moyes, after a new zipper. I was able to zip it up. Flying barefoot again is great, and much better in this harness. Thanks to Vicki, Kraig, and Steve at Moyes.

If you fly with the same wing loading as another pilot on a different size, your performances should match.

Attila Bertok on his new 5, and Steve Moyes and Dave Seib on their new 4.5s, demonstrated repeatedly that they could keep up with the best S4 pilots, on the fast inter-thermal glides at the Worlds. This is great news for the 90+kg guys out there; the new 5 can handle your weight!

I heard that Conrad Loten bought my Worlds glider, and has been raving about how much he loves the glider. I couldn't agree with him more! He has been out of the comp scene for about a year (maybe a little more) and yet he just tied for 1st with Jonny Durand Jr., at the recent NSW State Titles.

Looking towards the tips, the undersurface is cleaner, and blends seamlessly to the top surface, which is almost flawless. Gerolf spent endless hours obsessing over the most subtle details of the sail, and worked closely with the sail loft to improve the manufacturing process. The result is beautiful gliders with incredible flight consistency.

The base glider is a solid package, but if you like carbon, there are numerous options to choose from- outboard leading edges, dive struts, and carbon battens.

These parts not only save weight and improve roll rate, but the new super-stiff carbon dive struts also contribute to the enhanced pitch stability.

The high speed glide is impressive- both in terms of performance, and pitch consistency.

The new wing seems to favour a shallower thermaling style - which I prefer. I found myself climbing better then ever.

One day at the Worlds in Hay, I went back for a later start, against a 30km/h wind. Hit the start at only 140m above the ground and found something. It was windy, so down low the thermal was broken up, and barely big enough to turn in. My glider responded immediately and rolled fast, allowing me to follow the elusive surges, without stalling a tip. Soon I was at cloudbase, in the cool air, and smiling. If my glider wasn't so easy to fly, I might have been packing up in the heat and dust, alone.

Another day we flew until sunset without making goal. The combination of late-day climb performance and glide to fight the headwind, brought me the closest to goal. This glider gives me the feeling that I could climb in almost anything. It's hard to describe what is making it climb so well, but I think the new tips have something to do with it. When you are low and desperate, you can throw the glider around in broken patches of lift and get away with it. When it's light and smooth, you can keep your bank shallow, relax, and just go up.

Once you hit base and are cruising at 80km/h, you'll see the glider goes flat (near 10:1) and keeps up with anything. It's so much fun to cruise at those speeds, but sometimes you'll miss the next one, and have to get up from low. That's when you'll be especially happy on this wing!

I asked Brett:

I flew the 4 this year because from my experience last year the 4.5 was too big for me in the sense of handling. I felt on that glider that it was handling me instead of the other way around.

I really liked flying the 4 this year and as you can see from the IGC files of Steve Moyes and I on the last day at Deni, there was no difference in sink rate between him on the new 4.5 and a heavier me on the older version  4.0.

Are you saying in here that I should consider going back to the 4.5 as it has a better climb rate than the 4? Are you saying that the new 4.5 has better handling perhaps equivalent to the 4 than the 4.5 I flew a year ago?

Brett responded:

At 86kg bare weight, you're at the high end of the 4 and the low-ish end of the 4.5.

The new 4.5 has a higher effective aspect ratio than last year, now similar to the 4. You would climb better on the new 4.5, especially in the light stuff, as long as you could control it effectively. Since last years' 4.5 felt big to you, and you like the current 4, I would stay with the 4. Handling wise, the 4 and 4.5 are about the same, with the same wing loading.

I'm 77kg  and almost decided to fly the 4.5 this year. If I were your weight, I definitely would. But it's a personal thing, the first priority is being happy with the handling. The differences in wing loading we are talking about here, are small, and make more difference to the handling than the climb rate. All the gliders have essentially the same aspect ratio, so just fly the one you enjoy more.

For slightly better handling, the carbon tip wands, and carbon outboard leading edges make the most difference. However the handling difference is fairly small, easily noticeable when I test fly gliders back-to-back at Stanwell, but easily forgotten if I fly just one glider. If you don't mind spending the money, they're fun to have. The inboards also make a small difference, but they may be too expensive to be worth it, and may not even be available.

(editor's note: Take note of what Brett is claiming here. He's saying that over the full range of Moyes Litespeed S's you can expect the same performance with the same wing loading. I haven't heard a hang glider manufacturer ever make this claim before (but then I do have a short attention span). It would be very cool if they indeed accomplished this, and also it would be very hard to know for sure, precisely.

You'll also notice what an incredible size/weight range they have for their Litespeeds. No other manufacture has five models (well, one is still being worked on) for their top of the line glider. Icaro has four sizes. Wills wing has two.

It has always been thought that there is one size that really works, the one that fits the designer. The others are often thought of as after thoughts. It looks like Gerolf and his associates have worked hard to create gliders across a wide arrange of weights and sizes.)
