Task #3

We arrived at the bombout to see Mt Murchison in cloud with a moderate north wind. The safety committee were considering calling the day off. After some discussion the wind was dropping so the decision was made go ahead with task #3 and a briefing was held.

Neil Howe won the turkey award for nearly losing his instrument deck in flight during task #2. His mounting bracket was damaged during the dust devils on take off and completely broke off during his 70km flight to goal. He managed to grab it and lash it to his base bar with his VG rope. He landed on his wheels at goal holding his instrument in one hand!

Steve C presented the day prizes for task #2 ~ Matt Barlow won open class and Gary Turner won sport class. A correction to yesterdays results ~ Andre van der Elst came third in sports class.

Matt pointed out the take off window start time can be seen on the Airtribune task set each day. The take off window closing time will be posted on our WhatsApp group after the tasks are posted. Les took off 30 seconds after the window closed for task #2. The task committee decided to not score his flight. A very hard call but the rules are the rules!

On takeoff a nice smooth north wind made for light soaring conditions. The sky soon filled with hang gliders and it got very congested. Eventually pilots climbed high enough to head on course. Most open class pilots flew to Murch township, down the Matakitaki to turnpoint one, back to a turnpoint north of town and then goal at Murch Airfield. 17 made goal with John Smith first, Matt Barlow second and Tom Kelner third.

Sport class had an embarrassing low scoring day. Only 3 pilots went on course down the Tutaki towards turnpoint one. Steve Cronin won with 11.55kms, Donald Payne second with 10.67kms and Sean Oliver third with 9.07kms. Steve F, Kirsy, Rod and Andre bombed! Gary did not fly. We need to sharpen up our act for task #4!

Overall placings after 3 tasks:

Open Class:
1st Matt Barlow
2nd Ian Clark
3rd John Smith

Sports Class:
1st Gary Turner
2nd Steve Cronin
3rd Rod Stuart

The much coveted Kahu Cup club competition is now being scored. The best three pilots scores from each club are added together for each task. The South Island clubs are dominating and scores are very close!

1st Canterbury 6513
2nd Aorangi 6397
3rd Southern 5917

Steve Cronin will be getting the turkey award at the next briefing for a spectacular landing involving trees and an electric fence ~ more on that coming when I do my task #4 log!

Today we have a rest day with rain. A chance for pilots to rest and relax after an amazing 4 days of flying in a row.

On Day 2 Matt Barlow is leading in Open Class and Gary Turner is leading in Sports Class.

What an action packed day in the skys over Murchison NZ. At the morning briefing the day prizes were given out. Ian Clark won task #1 in open class and Sean Oliver won task #1 in sports class. Steve Bankier won the turkey award for his spectacular crash landing at Murchison airfield yesterday. He narrowly missing a tin shed on the side of the runway. Fortunately hang glider and pilot were both undamaged.

Takeoff on Murchison produced some scary moments! NZHGPA president was first off in his para glider and had a spectacular collapse right in front of us. Fortunately he recovered as everyone watching uttered a mixture of expletives! Tom Kelner nearly turned a 72km goal flight into a 72m lunge into the hillside. Luckily he pulled it off with more expletives from the crowds!

Brian Russell broke a carbon base bar aborting his takeoff. I heard of another two carbon base bars broken on landing. The dust devil that set up on the lower takeoff was one of the scariest I have ever seen. It was huge and lasted a good 15 minutes. The wind was blowing up from both sides at once.

Three gliders were turtled. Most pilots unclipped and a big thank you to takeoff marshal Dennis Thorp, drivers and supporters who helped us hold our gliders down. Eventually everyone got off into the express elevator lift above Mt Murchison. Many went on glide at altitudes above 8000'.

Some flew down the Tutaki and some flew straight towards Murchison township. The Tutaki was the better option on the 72km straight glide to goal at Springs Junction. 15 pilots made goal with a few others agonizingly close. Matt Barlow won the day in a super fast 1hr 46min flight. Piers Throssell came in second and Shane McKay third.

In sport class Gary Turner won the day and was the only pilot to make goal. Rod Stuart came second and Steve Cronin third.

Pilots arrived back from Springs Junction buzzing with many tails of amazing flying.

Mark Patton flew with one base bar pin half out! He held onto his uprights and managed to land safely. Neil Howe's instrument came off his base bar and he landed at goal holding it in his hand.

Choosing the winner of the coveted turkey award will be hard for day 2.

Day 3 promises some more great flying weather.

Pete Helliwell is posting some awesome videos from the nationals tasks. Check out his YouTube channel. https://youtube.com/c/petehelliwell

Climate change is producing some amazing weather for flying, with this season being the best ever starting mid August with many great days out since then.

The strongest NZ field ever at this years Nationals with all pilots benefiting from holding the comp in Murchison for 5 years in a row now.

We are expecting to get 8 from 8 comp tasks in. But we'll see.

We are really pleased with the Nationals flags local pilot Steve Cronin designed.

What a cracker of a start to our competition! The first official briefing was held at the base of Mt Murchison. A big thank you was made to our organisers, drivers, support crews land owners and competitors. A special thank you to our Auckland pilots who made the effort to drive south soon after a 100 day lock down. Special mention to Bernard Massey who has made an amazing come back after many years away from the sport. A task committee was elected ~ John, Tom m, Matt, Ollie and Aaron. Tom K received a USB fan for his spectacular 'arrival' at St Arnard airfield ~ the glider trailer won! Rod declared the 44th Hang Gliding Nationals open to a big cheer from all and a fully loaded convoy of 4x4s headed up our sacred mountain.

Open Class task was to fly the 'box' ~ Mt Murchison, down the Tutaku Valley, across to the Matakitaki Valley and back to the airfield at Murchison for goal.

Sport Class task was down the Tutaki with two turn points and a short return to goal.

A nice SW wind gave smooth soaring conditions but not ideal height as we lunged into the Tutaki. It was a bit of a grovel to establish on the first range down the valley. The bombout paddocks claimed a few but further on course thermal heights increased and the race was on! Tony and I picked up the loneliest pilot in the world ~ Sabastien Katz at the end of the road down the beautiful Tutaki Valley.

Vicki Cain <<Vicki>> writes:

Moyes would like to congratulate all the winners from the 43rd New Zealand Hang Gliding Nationals. It looked like epic flying with all eight days flown.

We were pleased to learn that the Moyes boys dominated the competition winning every single task. John Smith even managed to score a perfect 1000 points on the last three days when he was forced to switch to his older Litespeed RS4 after damaging his Icaro glider.

Ian Clark flew consistently all week taking home the win with a convincing lead.

Congratulations to the organizing committee for another great comp.

Matt Barlow «Matt Barlow» writes:

Wow what a comp it has been. After not making goal for two days in a row and plummeting in the rankings, John Smith pulled out all stops winning the last three days with perfect 1000 point wins on each day.

As good as this was though Ian Clark flew faultlessly throughout the entire competition making goal every day and was crowned the undisputed 2021 New Zealand Hang Gliding Champion. Outstanding flying Ian, and a job very well done.

John Smith finished in second place, defending champion Matt Barlow 3rd.

Congratulations also goes out to Henning Kruger, beating out some stiff competition and becoming our 2021 Sport Class Champion.

Inaugural winners of the 'Kahu Cup' - (Inter Club comp) were Southern, followed by Aorangi, and Canterbury taking third place. For full results of day eight and the overall results just click on the link below:

Huge thanks go to the many volunteers and helpers that pitched in and made this our most successful and enjoyable Nationals ever!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - We are seriously considering placing a bid for the 2025 World Hang Gliding Championships. With so much uncertainty in the rest of the world but New Zealand being Covid free, and with Murchison (New Zealand) offering such user friendly spectacular World Class flying, we are excited about the possibility and what the future may hold.

170 kilometers in New Zealand

Flying into the mountains on the South Island

Ian Clark|John Smith|record

Ian Clark <<Ian>> writes:

John Smith, Matt Barlow and I managed to fly cross country from Coronet Peak in Queenstown, New Zealand yesterday (22nd Nov).  John and I flew most of the way together to Lake Ohau (130 km) while Matt was about 45 minutes behind us and managed to land at The Hermitage – Mt. Cook (170km).

Below is the link to the Ayvri track logs.

It was probably the most awe inspiring flight I’ve had here in the south island of New Zealand with very strong climbs (1600 ft/min) up to 9500ft, large lake crossings and flying into mountain ranges that just took my breath away.

Interesting to see that Matt took a very similar line to John and I and was getting climbs in almost identical places despite only having had a brief discussion beforehand on what the goal was (which very generally was to fly 100 miles or break the NZ distance record (202km)).

Looking for tandem hang glider pilots

Go to New Zealand

Ian Clark

Ian Clark <<Ian>> writes:

It’s that time of year again where Skytrek is looking for tandem hang gliding pilots who might like to work with us for the 2018/19 summer season from Coronet Peak in Queenstown, New Zealand. The season runs from Sept/October through to March/April. A reasonable level of fitness is needed as we can at times be doing six to eight flights a day. I

t’s a great way to improve one’s flying fitness and thermalling skills while being paid to do so. If any readers have an interest in a position and have at least a minimum of 50 foot launch tandems, I would love to hear from them: <ian>

Burnt

Dry in New Zealand

Ian Clark|John Smith

Ian Clark <<Ian>> writes:

It’s a bit dry in Central Otago, New Zealand at the moment. We had some RC planes using the airstrip we tow from and one of the planes back-fired setting the grass on fire. The hobbyists couldn’t get the blaze under control and as a result, we were lucky to save our equipment from going up in flames. The lift has been pretty strong out there with 3 minute tows to 2500 ft AGL the norm and difficulty in getting down.

Paragliding and hang gliding

Ian Clark|PG

Ian Clark <<ian>> writes:

Skytrek Tandems, based in Queenstown, New Zealand are currently looking for full time tandem paragliding pilots as well as tandem hang gliding pilots to fill vacant positions. Join our experienced team flying customers from Coronet Peak. Queenstown is experiencing a tourism boom with double digit growth coming from many markets. If interested, please email your CV to <info>.

We don’t have enough winter paraglider pilots this year and it’s becoming harder and harder to find hang gliding tandem pilots. Work permits, if required, are also taking a long time to process.

Ian Clark <<ian>> writes:

A good friend of mine, Sebastian Katz, recently completed a flight on the west coast close to Auckland, New Zealand. The conditions to achieve this sort of flight is extremely rare for a hang glider pilot. Checking out some cameras

Checking out some cameras

Superseded already

Ian Clark|photo|video

Ian Clark <<ian>> writes:

I have been trying to improve the quality of the photos and videos we produce on behalf of our clients. This video was produced using some of our newest equipment and I’ve been very impressed particularly with the Drift Innovation HD170. You’ll also notice how we have fixed an airspeed indicator onto the side of the camera mount. With the introduction of CAR Part 115 – Adventure Aviation in New Zealand later this year, it will be a requirement for all commercial hang gliding tandems to carry an airspeed indicator. The location of this airspeed indicator places it within view of the pilot at all times and puts it into a relatively clean air flow. The camera poles are stored inside our vehicle while not in use so this keeps both the camera remotes and ASI out of harm’s way.

I am hoping that Drift Innovation will give us some way of remotely switching the camera from photos to videos and vice versa without having to go through the cameras menu system. This would reduce the need to use two cameras, reduce the weight and reduce the cost.

Both cameras in the video have also been superseded by the Drift Innovation Stealth and Samsung WB1000.

Ian Clark <<ian>> writes:

In the most recent Oz Report you have a short snippet on the 2011 NZ Hang Gliding Nationals. I’m not sure what Teddy was flying in, however, it wasn’t the NZ Hang Gliding Nationals as these were held in Wanaka just last week.

The competition went from the 22nd to the 29th January and four successful flying days were held. Over thirty competitors entered the comp. Highlights of the competition included flying up the Lindis Valley with goal at Omarama and a flight up to the neck between Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea (see photo) with goal in Wanaka.

Cloudbase was up to 8400 feet during the competition with excellent climbs of over 1000 ft/min a regular occurrence.

D-bagging and tandem

The first video has a paraglider d-bagging from a tandem hang glider over the Flight Park.

The second video is something I've put together that tries to capture the magic of flight from in the air.

Both video's are non-commercial in nature.

Tom Collet «nz_flyboy» writes:

This season I am working with Queenstown Hang Gliding doing commercial flights off Coronet Peak. Just before Christmas a local paraglider pilot had his 40th birthday at the flight park, our main LZ. Quite a few of the lads did fly-ins.

We connected with some base jump guys there and organised a jump from our hang gliders into the gig on the spur of the moment. Junior (his name) who released from my tandem glider had a helmet cam and recorded it. It's defiantly more exciting than the Millennium.

Corryong Cup

Blue Sky|Ian Clark|Oliver Barthelmes|Paul Hunt|weather

Blue Sky|Ian Clark|Oliver Barthelmes|Paul Hunt|weather

Paul Hunt«Paul.Hunt» writes:

I thought I might give you a quick update on the Corryong Cup, which is a fun comp run in the Corryong area of NE Victoria every January. It is currently run by the Blue Mountains Hang Gliding club. It is generally run at the same time as one of the major tow comps as a fun alternative for low airtime pilots wishing to gain some low pressure comp experience and more experienced pilots wishing to avoid the rigors of the tow paddock.

Tasks are set at a reasonable length to give inexperienced pilots a chance of making their first goal but hopefully challenging enough for the more experienced. For the first time this year scoring was performed using a simple handicap system developed by Stefen Kremer after analysis of last year's results. This involved giving each pilot a base score determined by pro-rating their flight distance against that of the day's longest flight with 100 allocated for the longest flight.

This score is then multiplied by handicap factors determined by the type of glider (1.0 for topless/rigid, higher for kingpost and intermediate gliders) and pilot experience (1.0 for experienced pilots > 100 hours, higher for lower airtime pilots). Additionally goal bonuses of 15, 10, 5 are awarded to the first 3 pilots to land at goal. This encourages pilots to leave early and gives the topless pilots a chance to get closer to kingpost gliders that make goal.

This year's comp was scheduled over 7 days from 13 Jan thru 19 Jan and after a slow start the weather just got better every day with the last few days coinciding with the great pre-Bogong Cup weather you described in a previous Oz Report.

The Corryong area is one of the best hilly cross-country flying areas in Australia with a network of interconnecting valleys and a good road network allowing for interesting task setting. The downside is that we only use one 2000' agl WNW launch, which, while being very reliable, can be susceptible to strong winds from other directions.

We flew 5 valid tasks over the 7 days with task lengths ranging from 70 to 95 km. We had up to 20 pilots in goal each day from a field of ~60 pilots. The tasks we set are illustrated on the attached map and are as follows.

13/jan day canned (great looking day but unfortunately moderate south winds prevented launching)
14/jan Task 1 (brown) Mt. Elliot to Tintaldra to Cudgewa West to Khancoban airstrip
15/jan day canned due to some pilots in air reporting rain and threat of overdevelopment
16/jan Task 2 (blue) Mt. Elliot to Walwa to Towong to Corryong airstrip
17/Jan Task 3 (green) Mt. Elliot to Cudgewa West to Tooma to Corryong airstrip
18/Jan Task 4 (yellow) Mt. Elliot to Kangaroo Creek to Jingellic to Towong to Corryong airstrip
19/Jan Task 5 (mauve) Mt. Elliot to Kangaroo creek to Cudgewa West to Tintaldra to Corryong airstrip

The last day was probably the best flying day of the comp but unfortunately we had to call a shortish task near to Corryong to allow for the presentation dinner. Oliver decided to continue on and try to fly to Mt. Beauty after completing the course but turned back at Bullioh due to a blue sky ahead. He ended up landing back at goal a few hours later. An additional 80 kms!

The final place getters

1. Ian Clark (Airborne Shark 156)
2. Oliver Barthelmes (Moyes Litespeed)
3. Frazer Vickers (Moyes SX and intermediate pilot (hardly any cross country))
