Great British Aerotow Revival

Day two

«Kathryn Cole» writes:

The forecast has been suggesting that today might be the best day for the competition, and there was a palpable sense of anticipation in the air.

Briefing at 9:00am turned out to be relatively amusing as Steve Blacker collected his day prize for winning the first day of the competition he organised! In addition, Babs King gave a highly amusing summary of the text messages she had received from pilots the previous day. Apparently just texting "Joe Bloggs down safe" is incredibly hard for pilots desperate to let someone know that he made it to goal!! The Flyability kitty grew quite nicely thanks to a number of £5 "fines" for not following basic instructions.

The task was set. An 80km triangle for the flexwings and an ambitious 100km triangle for the rigids. Sport Class were tasked with and out and return of 40km.

Eager to get on with the days flying, and with not long until launch opened, the pilots began rigging in earnest on the day's allocated runway - which was even more crosswind than anticipated. As a result, meet head Jamie Shelden had to make the difficult call to relocate everyone to the cross runway. Begin the mad rush to move 50 odd gliders in various rigging states, trolleys, paraphernalia etc. Thanks to the sterling work of the volunteers everyone got moved across and back into a sensible launch order in record time.

Then the fun began of tugging up first the rigid pilots, followed by the flexi's. It was a boiling hot day, and with the rougher runway claiming a number of flat tyres and an engine getting a bit grumpy, we were down to two tugs at one point. The aptly named 'fun' tug decided it wanted to be renamed to 'not so fun' after all! All in all, 52 tows were achieved, with two pilots grabbing a relight.

Nine pilots from Class 1 made it to goal, with Dave Matthews, Gordon Rigg and Steven Blacker taking the podium. Other pilots in goal were Richard Lovelace, Johnny Carr, Graham Phipps, Justin Needham, Andy Hollidge and Ollie Moffatt. Special mention goes to Ollie who was one of the last pilots of the day to launch and still made it to goal, skimming in out of the sunset, landing well past 7pm!!

In Class 5, Paul Harvey and Ricardo Marques da Costa both made goal. Another four pilots made it more than 80km, nothing to be sniffed at with today's task!

None of the Sports Class pilots made goal but Tim Swait made it 31.4km taking the win for the day.

Ben Dunn|Davis Straub|Dustin Martin|Jeff O'Brien|Jeff Shapiro|Pre-Worlds 2011|Ubaldo Romano|Wills Wing T2C|World Pilot Ranking Scheme|Worlds 2023|Zac Majors

The best guess so far: http://www.cucco2011.org/test_romano/ Click Pilot Info, then Pilots List. Based on December 2, 2009, WPRS ranking, will change when January ranking is available. US pilots chosen to go to the pre-Worlds, so far:

Zac Majors, Wills Wing T2C-144
Dustin Martin, Wills Wing T2C-144
Jeff O'Brien, Wills Wing T2C (144 or 154)
Davis Straub, Icaro Laminar MR1000
Jeff Shapiro, Wills Wing T2C-144
Derreck Turner, Moyes Litespeed S5
Ben Dunn, Moyes Litespeed

Each nation gets up to five pilots independent of WPRS ranking. If more than five pilots from one country apply for the pre-Worlds, then the top five in that nation as per their January 2010 WPRS ranking are allowed in. When all those nations' slots are taken (some nations won't have five slots because less than five pilots pre-registered from that nation, for example, Turkey), then the remaining slots are available by WPRS ranking to the pilots who pre-registered.

Turns out a lot of pilots from Italy pre-registered and they have a lot of good WPRS rankings, and so fifteen pilots are coming from Italy. Derreck Turner and Ben Dunn got in with their WPRS rankings. Many US pilots did not.

Everyone has to get their entry fee in with ten days (January 17th) or they go to the end of the line. Starting on the 17th, pilots are chosen for the now empty slots by pre-registration date.

The actual five man teams will be decided at the competition.

Update: The January WPRS ranking it up and the pilot list will be updated soon.

Apparently hang gliding is not dying at the level of World competitions (or at least pre-Worlds) The Italian based pre-Worlds is over subscribed already, just a few days after opening the registration to the waiting list. The local regulations state:

Registration will open on 2nd November 2009. Priority will be given to national teams of up to 5 pilots per country.

Places will be allocated starting from 7th January 2010 to pilots on the waiting list.

Allocation will be based on WPRS ranking on 1st January 2010 followed by order of registration for any unranked pilots.

As from 7th January, all confirmed pilots will have ten days time in which to pay the registration fee, in order not to lose their priority position in the pilot list.

Therefore, confirmed pilots whose receipt of payment does not reach the organizers by 17th January, will be moved to the bottom of the waiting list.

All other pilots accepted afterwards, will have 10 days to pay the registration fee before their place is reallocated to another pilot.

New UK Record Competition Flight

UK Record

In between all the rain (like in Texas and Norway)

Gordon Rigg|Graham Phipps|John Aldridge|Justin Needham|Kathleen Rigg|record|Will Greenwood

Gordon Rigg «gordon.rigg245km» writes:

Here in the UK the big news is it has been raining heavy for over a month with no let up. Thousands of people are flooded out of their houses in Yorkshire particularly in Doncaster, Sheffield and Hull - also areas in the south west along the river Severn and parts of Wales. Scotland (usually the wettest bit of the UK) seems to have escaped most of it.

Our UK based series of competitions ended up with only two tasks scored out of a possible eight days flying so we arranged to run some extra days over two possible weekends, the first of which was also washed out. On the weekend of July 7th and 8th we got a change, and despite that fact that it was still raining heavily on the Friday cloud base was over 5000ft with a brisk west northwest winds at Merthyr Common (the classic Welsh slag heap come rubbish dump hang gliding site).

John Aldridge was away so Kathleen Rigg set the task at 177km to Milton Keynes via one turn point to keep us out of airspace. This was at least thirty degrees off the brisk wind, to avoid controlled airspace south of the course line. As it was, it was very good for those who got going early but sea breeze up the Severn estuary made it difficult for those who chose a later start time.

Three pilots made the goal. And we believe it was a new UK flight to goal record and the longest competition task ever set on UK soil. Dave Mathews won the day and Will Greenwood and Justin Needham (who discovered he had unfortunately just missed the turnpoint) made goal, http://www.rogallo.co.uk/bhgs/sewales/t3res-07.htm Next day two pilots made the 70 km goal dodging heavy showers with Dave Mathews second to Graham Phipps. Results are at http://www.rogallo.co.uk/hotnews.htm.

Unfortunately no track logs.

The only flex wing at goal

British Open 2007|David Williamson|Graham Phipps|Neville Almond

Graham Phipps (Phippsy) writes:

Managed to get my new Wills Wing T2 144 the day before the start of the British Open comp and even managed to put it together and give her a fifteen minute check out flight. Needless to say everything was fine straight out of the box.

First task of the comp was a cross wind leg to turn point then semi crosswind to goal. Only 31k, but conditions were challenging. Pleased to say glider flew superbly no doubt contributing to my flight to goal where I arrived as the only flex wing to make it, the only other “goalie” was Neville Almond on his ATOS.

Unfortunately the rest of the comp proved untaskable so (more fortunately) resulting in a Wills Wing T2 144 winning the British Open and currently leading the overall series.

Pilots who have not confirmed their entries have been put on a wait list in order of registration. Please check the list to make your necessary plans accordingly. Any pilots who have paid, but not put their name on their payments with their bank should contact the organiser direct.

Wills Wing T2 Wins first round of British Open Hang Gliding Series

Bruce Kavanagh|Graham Phipps

Phippsy «graham» writes:

Graham Phipps (Phippsy) won two out of the three tasks at the first round of the British Open Hang Gliding Series in the UK. Flying a Wills Wing T2 144 he took the first day by a large margin being the only pilot to cross the river Severn from Wales into England, Bruce Kavanagh also on a T2 placed 2nd.

On the second day he finished 9th after a poor start on the race to goal whilst Bruce did better coming in 2nd again in a close fought race. The final task proved a tricky one with no pilots making goal but Phippsy once again took the honours to regain the overall lead and win the competition. Bruce finished third overall making it a top result for Wills Wing with two T2's in the top three.

Phippsy reports that his T2 was going extremely well and he felt he had an overall advantage in glider performance and handling.

Results can be found at :- www.theleague.force9.co.uk/bhgs/sewales.htm
