Previously, I responded to each email about a donation to the Oz Report with a thank you note. I realized that contributors didn't necessarily get recognized when I sent a thank you note, even though they would be listed on the sponsors page. So I thought that from now on I'll recognize them here in the regular Oz Report reports instead.
Thanks to you we can pay for the Oz Report's web hosting server and for the technical support required to keep us functioning. You might be surprised about how complex this operation actually is.

Irish record paraglider flight
Last week

Dara Hogan <<paradarahogan>> writes:
Nice coverage in the Irish Examiner on my friend Dorin Borodescu's brilliant 122km record cross-country paragliding flight last week.
Dorin is one a number of Eastern European paraglider pilots who have immigrated into Ireland in recent years and their flying skills are amazing. Many IHPA members were following the flight on http://www.livetrack24.com/track/609812 and it just seemed to go on and on.
A great result from one of our favourite pilots!

Republic of Ireland PG XC Record Smashed by Rafal Obara

Dara Hogan <<dara.hogan>> writes:
The outgoing PG Competitions Officer (PG) of the Irish hang Gliding & Paragliding Association, Rafal Obora, smashed the Irish XC record with a flight of nearly 78km (over 48 miles) on his last day in office - 6th April 2013. His excuse for arriving late to the IHPA AGM was accepted! The previous record was held by Tom Cardas who flew 65km on 10th April 2011 from Mount Leinster to beyond Ashford, County Wicklow. Here's some video from Rafal's flighht.
Rafal and his flying buddy Mariusz flew from Mount Leinster and they landed just north of Rathangan, County Kildare in the same field. Rafal reached cloudbase at 4,600 feet. Lubor came close landing at 73km. Here's Rafal's track:
http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/733903
Rafal, Mariusz and Lubor are "new-Irish" who emigrated from eastern Europe to Ireland at the height of the Celtic Tiger. Their flying skills have made a huge impression on the local Irish flying scene. In recent years, the local Irish pilots have experienced significant adverse weather with non-existent summers. The spring months of April and May have proven to be the best flying months.

Celtic Cup Revival
Celtic Cup Revival
Over the Bank Holiday
Dara Hogan|PG|weather
Dara Hogan «dara.hogan» writes:
The Irish Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (IHPA) is delighted to announce the resurrection of the Celtic Cup Competition. The Celtic Cup will be held at Mount Leinster over the Bank Holiday weekend from 1st to 4th May 2009 which coincides with the 35th Anniversary of the founding of IHPA. This is preliminary notification for diaries and pilots should note that 4th May is a Bank Holiday in both Ireland and the UK. The next edition will carry detailed information on the competition which will probably be based at Bunclody, County Wexford. There will be a wide variety of accommodation options and IHPA looks forward to welcoming partners and families to enjoy Ireland’s famous Céad Míle Fáilte (one hundred, thousand welcomes)!
Naturally, there will be two competitions in parallel - the paragliding event will complement the historical hang gliding event. Better still, the paragliders have even promised not to fly further than the hang gliders! While there will undoubtedly be serious competition between the top pilots, IHPA are taking steps to ensure that the Celtic Cup will be a “fun for all” event. Music, drinking and debauchery are planned as well as a very special evening on the Saturday night (2nd May). There will be a back-up plan in the event of unfavourable weather as well as details of sight-seeing and recreational options for non-flying, non-retrieving visitors.
Intending visitors should note that only full-blooded Celts are permitted to enter the Celtic Cup. By definition the six Celtic nations are Brittany, Cornwall, Isle of Man, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Any others (especially English pilots!) Wishing to attend will need to carefully consider the options open to them such as disguises, false beards and plastic surgery.
The hang gliding event will be managed by IHPA HG Competitions Officer, Geoff McMahon, who can be contacted on +353 86 233-8127 and the paragliding event will be managed by IHPA PG Competitions Officer, Eoin Hogan, who can be contacted on +353 86 812-2030. Watch this space for further details to follow!

Enda in Ireland

A new Irish distance record.

The flight
Dara Hogan «dara.hogan»
writes:
Australian Team Advance pilot, Enda Murphy, has just broken the
Irish paragliding distance open record with a flight of 140km on his Advance
prototype on 27th July. My son, Eoin, held the previous record with a flight of
61km in 2004 on his Apco Allegra.
Click the picture for a higher resolution version
Enda had been planning to try some distance flying in Ireland with a two week
stay from 14th to 30th July visiting friends and relatives. The weather had been
quite warm and dry in comparison with normal Irish conditions. However, he had
no luck in the first week and a half as the conditions were either too blue and
stable or too windy with low cloud base to make any real attempt. Eoin was
quietly hoping that the weather wouldn’t change before Enda had to fly back to
Australia!
Luckily for Enda, conditions on Thursday at last allowed a great declared goal
flight of 138km from near Dungarvan, County Waterford to near Brittas, County
Dublin and an open distance record of 140km. Enda told me that he only landed
because he was at the edge of the Dublin CTA.
Enda’s flight more than doubled Eoin’s paragliding record and has also eclipsed
the existing hang gliding record of 132km which was set earlier this summer by
Geoff McMahon. Enda’s record is all the more creditable given the vagaries of
the Irish weather and the Atlantic influence which makes our neighbouring
island, the UK, much more amenable to distance flying.
Many congrats to Enda from all his friends in IHPA and commiserations to Eoin
(and Geoff)! Geoff’s record stands, of course, but it’s not nice being beaten by
a floppy – is it?

Dara Hogan «dara.hogan» writes:
IHPA Competitions Officer (HG) Mike Butler has confirmed that his sub-committee has selected Geoff McMahon to represent Ireland in Rio and we had the Red Bull camera crew out filming us last week at Mount Leinster. There were three other candidates on the short-list: Harry Abraham, Fran Denny and Richie Hudson. We were lucky to have four excellent candidates from which to choose and my only regret is that Red Bull were not looking for a team of 4 hang gliders.
Geoff is one of our most experienced pilots and he flies an Aeros Combat. As well as having an impressive flying career Geoff currently heads the IHPA HG League and he has shown great support for IHPA by his regular attendance at Irish competitions (despite his work commitments in France).

Dara Hogan <dara.hogan@esatclear.ie> writes:
Shane lost his battle last night after eight days in Intensive Care.
Funeral details will be in the press and at this stage I can only provide outline information. There will be a viewing time tomorrow evening (Wednesday) from 7pm to 9pm in Collier's Funeral home in Bray. The removal will be from Collier's on Thursday evening (time TBC) to St. Fergal's Church, Killarney Road, Bray with the Funeral Mass on Friday morning (time TBC).
Shane's father, Gerry, has asked me to make sure that Shane's many friends are aware of the arrangements and Gerry also asked me to thank everyone for their many enquiries and for their support during the past week.
To say that Shane was important to Irish hang gliding is an under-statement. He was a champion pilot who represented his country and the Association on many occasions. Together with Ger Doherty and a few others he was responsible for the re-birth of hang gliding in Ireland when, a few years ago, he founded the Mount Leinster Hang Gliding Club (a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to training novice hang gliding pilots).
He is already sorely missed by the hang glider pilots he introduced to the sport, by the seasoned hang gliders with whom he flew and by the paragliders with whom he shared the air. His passing is a huge loss to free-flying and our sympathies are with Gerry, Arda, Jennie, Dave, Niamh and Shane's family and friends at this time.

Top Irish hang glider pilot hurt
Dara Hogan|fatality|Shane O'Reilly
Dara Hogan <dara.hogan@esatclear.ie> writes:
Many international HG pilots will know Shane O'Reilly - one of Ireland's top hang gliders. Sadly, Shane is on the critical list at St Vincent's Hospital after an incident over the hang gliding goal field at last Sunday's Celtic Cup (further details later). He has major internal injuries and his liver damage is the greatest cause for concern. Yesterday, there was a small glimmer of hope when there was a sign that his liver function may have started to come back but it is still well below the levels needed to pull him through.
I have a nice picture of Shane and Gerry with some pilots in the Duiske Inn on Saturday night and I've sent that on to Shane's sister, Jennie. I'll send it out to the list later. Gerry told me that the quality of Shane's medical care in St Vincent's is first class so he's in the right place and getting the best possible medical attention. Our thoughts are with Shane's father, Gerry (past-Chairman of IHPA), and Shane's family and friends at this dark hour. We're all keeping our fingers crossed.

Four tandems all in a row

Brad Kushner at Raven Sky Sports <brad@hanggliding.com> writes:
Four tandems thermalling together in the same gaggle, that's the kind of day it was! Tim Thompson and Brad Kushner were the two tug pilots. Lots of Wisconsin Hang Gliding Club members showed up to fly. At first, it looked like it would be a light and scratchy thermalling day, but the lift got great in the afternoon, and remained great until almost 6pm! Those who had gotten 'enough' airtime and folded up their gliders at 3 or 4 pm were surprised to see almost all of the other pilots staying up after 5pm, and then after 6pm.
We had a group of almost a dozen newbies come out for intro tandem flights, plus our usual contingent of Raven Sky Sports' students-in-training. They showed up at around 3:30, got through their paperwork by about 4, and the first tandem flight of the afternoon went up at about 4:15. Within a few minutes, we had three tandem gliders up and soaring. Mark Furst took the fourth tandem glider and took Dara for a thermalling tandem lesson. It was shortly after this, that all four of Raven's Northwing T2 tandem gliders were stacked in a single thermal over the UW-Whitewater athletic complex with Pete Berney in his Ghostbuster 2,000 feet above everybody else in the stack. Whatta day!
Our four Northwing T2 tandem gliders, each one set up with tandem landing gear, High Energy over/under harnesses, Quantum 550 reserves, and in-flight cameras…pre-flighted and tied down, waiting for the students to arrive.

Celtic Cup

writes:
It's Ireland's turn to host the Celtic Cup this year and we're running it on Mount Leinster, County Carlow on the weekend of 24th / 25th May 2003. The Celtic Cup is the world's longest running International Hang Gliding Competition. It is a hard fought annual team event between the bloodthirsty Celtic clans of Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Isle of Man, Iceland, Brittany (France) and Cornwall (England).
The 2003 Celtic Cup will be held on 24th & 25th of
May in Graiguenamanagh, County Kilkenny, 9 miles SW of Mount Leinster. It is a
pretty little town sitting on the banks of the River Barrow with good views of
Mount Leinster and the Blackstairs mountains. Most importantly, there are 13
pubs serving the 1,300 residents! The Celtic Cup is primarily a HG event but
there will be a parallel PG competition and pilots from all countries and from
both disciplines will be most welcome.
Interested pilots can e-mail «celticcup» or keep an eye on the Celtic Cup page on our website at www.ihpa.ie where we provide further details.
