A few comments on JD's analysis

Fri, May 20 2022, 6:42:47 pm MDT

Why did he take the time to look at this issue?

cloud flying|Daniel Vélez Bravo|FAI Sporting Code|J.D. Guillemette|Wilotree Park Nationals 2022

JD writes:

The thing is I first reviewed the track logs from day one to see if my perception was correct. Turned out, I was wrong.

So then I looked at day 3 expecting to see Velez way above everyone by 1200' and cloud flying, that was the rumor. Instead, I saw him just a bit higher than others and presumably by himself in the blue. After reviewing the replay it changed my mind of what happened and felt I needed to point it out and squash the rumors.

Like JD I also looked at the pilot's track logs. I used SeeYou, which normalized the data, so that all the pilots altitudes were comparable. I was the pilot A in JD's map. I found cloud base to be 5,100'. I found that at his highest Daniel was at 5,236'. I also found that Daniel was over 4,000' to the east of pilots C/D, away from the cloud.

Should the 200 point penalty that Daniel received be rescinded and he be given the 10 point penalty as per CIVIL Section 7A rules?

A careful look at the data

cloud flying|Daniel Vélez Bravo|FAI Sporting Code|FS|J.D. Guillemette|Wilotree Park Nationals 2022

JD Guillemette writes:

My take on the Daniel Velez incident on Task 3 of the Wilotree National.

Daniel Velez was penalized 200 point on Task 3 for cloud flying and/or being too high above cloud base. Some estimates were that he had taken 1200ft unfair altitude advantage and he had an unfair advantage all the way to the 1st turn point.

I want to first say that I do not condone cloud flying, it’s dangerous, in violation of Federal Aviation Regulations and unsportsmanlike.

I have reviewed the replay of the pilot's track log IGC files from Airtribune and all the altitudes are the raw data as reported by the trackers and was the data used for scoring. Because the altitudes are not normalize , i.e. every pilot's launch altitude it not set to the actual GPS altitude which was the same for all pilots, there will be discrepancy if the same data is normalized with SeeYou, FS, or other programs due to altitude correction at launch.

To start the analysis we need to estimate cloud base. There were two clouds of interest that pilots were thermaling under. One cloud was near the edge of the start cylinder with Pilots A and B (among other) and another cloud to the Northwest with Pilots C and D (among others), please refer to the location map.

It’s difficult to determine the actual lateral boundaries of the clouds, but the center to center distance between the two thermaling groups is about 2.6km. Between time –00:08:04 (8 minutes before the start gate at 2 PM) and –00:06:28 pilot’s A and B maximum altitude was 1591m (5220’) and 1587m (5207’), we will assume that they were not cloud flying and this is the approximation of cloud A/B base. Between time –00:04:37 and –00:03:50 pilot’s C and D maximum altitude was 1535m (5036’) and 1543m (5062’), again assuming they were not cloud flying, we can assume this is the base of cloud C/D. There is already some degree of uncertainty of the cloud bases as they varied, but for sake of argument cloud base is between 1535m (5036’) and 1591m (5220’).

At time -00:01:25, Velez reached a max altitude of 1669m (5476’) at the location show on the map. He was right about equidistant between the two thermaling groups, and by his own admission higher than cloud base and not in the cloud with the cloud wall to his West. But how far to his West? Without knowledge of the actual lateral boundaries of the two clouds we don’t know for sure, but assuming a cloud diameters of 1km centered over the two thermaling groups, it’s mathematically possible that Velez was at least 2000’ laterally from either cloud. If so he may not have violated the Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) of 500’ under and 2000’ to side of a cloud.

At time -00:01:00 Velez stopped circling and proceeded to the edge of the start cylinder about 1km away. He crossed the start cylinder at Time +00:00:05 at 1595m (5233’) altitude. If we use the higher estimate of cloud A/B base (which was the cloud closer to the start cylinder) of 1591m (5220’), Velez started the race at 5 seconds past the first start gate at cloud base altitude, a near perfect start!

Between times +00:01:02 and +00:01:32 a large gaggle of pilots including pilots from cloud C/D crossed the start cylinder at altitudes ranging from 1231m (4039’) to 1325m (4347’). Velez was 900’ to 1200’ higher crossing the start cylinder than the following gaggle. This was the perceived “unfair advantage” Velez had taken.

However, Velez had an excellent start, right at the assumed cloud base altitude and 5 seconds after the 1st start gate, this was not an unfair start and any other pilot could have fairly started from the same position. The following gaggle had a bad start, headed for the start line from over 2km within the start circle, over a minute late, and giving up as much as 300m (984’) from their previous altitude. It wasn’t that Velez was too high, it was that they were low! If any pilots in that gaggle felt they had a poor start, they could have returned for the second start gate and tried for a better start. After all, isn’t that why there are more than one start gate, to try to get the best start you can?

It was also said that Velez took an unfair advantage prior to start by climbing to 1669m (5476’) which was between 134m and 78m (439’ to 256’) above the two cloud bases. But from the altitudes reported by pilots A/B and C/D trackers there was a variation in cloud bases and these two locations were over 1.3km from Velez’s position. Who is to say which cloud base altitude he was to reference? What if there a third developing cloud right above his location and he was under that base, would he now be below cloud base? Furthermore, the race starts at the start line, at the start time, Velez had timed it perfect and had no unfair altitude advantage since he was at cloud base altitude when he crossed the start line.

With regards to having an unfair advantage all the way to 1st turn point, at about time +00:23:53 and about half way to the 1st turn point Velez was with other pilots in a gaggle and no higher than anyone else. The author (Guillemette) and Velez left this climb at cloud base together at about the same altitude and were not the front runners. Additionally Velez was 3rd to reach the 1st turn point and at an altitude less than the two pilots in front of him and the two other pilots that made the turn point the same time he did. So any perceived unfair advantage he had to the 1st turn was a false claim.

FAI Sporting Code, Section 7A - 1st May 2022 (see 6.3) was also cited as the reason for the penalty. The key element cited from the rule is:

“Since it is against the law to climb up the side of a cloud above the transition level, this may not be an acceptable excuse for being higher than other pilots in the case of a complaint”.

But just what is the interpretation of this new rule? If we as pilots were crossing a “blue hole” and the nearest cloud is 10km away, is it saying we can not climb above the base of that cloud? Certainly not! What if the nearest cloud was 5km away or 1km (3000’)?

The text of the rule is “…climb up the side of a cloud…”, this implies that the pilot is in close proximity of the side of the cloud. If we look at the FAR, climbing up the side of a cloud would also be a violation. But what if the pilot is more than 2000’ from the side of the cloud as required by FAR? IMO, this new rule is moot in the USA since the FAR will not allow us to be more than 2000’ from the side of the cloud. We don’t know for sure since we don’t know the lateral boundaries of the cloud at that time, but Velez says he was 800m from the side of the cloud. As mentioned before, based upon the location of the two thermaling groups relative to Velez’s position, this supports Velez’s claim.

Furthermore, the cloud flying 1st offence penalty is 10 points (no warning). Although 10 points seems too small, keep in mind there is no warning, IMO the points are assigned to remove all doubt the pilot had a 1st offence. 2nd and 3rd offences are much stricter to strongly discourage cloud flying.

My point is there is very little hard evidence Velez did anything wrong or deliberately took an unfair advantage and in my opinion the 200 point penalty was excessive and could not be supported by fact or rule.

Daniel Velez Bravo's analysis

Daniel Vélez Bravo|Davis Straub|Wilotree Park Nationals 2022

https://danielvelezbravo.wordpress.com/

Translated into English:

https://danielvelezbravo-wordpress-com.translate.goog/?_x_tr_sl=es&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp

Until the start of the championship and until the night I was sanctioned, we were aware that flying in a cloud consisted of completely disappearing inside a cloud, from the view of another pilot who was just below. Strictly speaking, it is what pilots call “white out” and it is that everything turns white in all directions, so there is no relationship with the ground or the sky. Under this criteria, I take it very seriously when I am in championships, to never fly in the clouds, and always make sure I am below or next to them, obviously getting as close as possible to gain the greatest advantage without losing sight of the ground or of the horizon. On day 3, 8 minutes before the start, I got much closer than expected to the base in a strong ascent and I had to retreat 800 meters to the side of the cloud, to make sure you don't get caught inside it. And just before the start, where I took the highest altitude and the best position, I was flying with the wall of a cloud to my west, but with more than 180° of open sky, down, up and east completely open and clear.

However, that night of the sanction, reviewing the rules of section 7 that regulates international sports aviation, we found an addendum of May 1, 2022 (that is, it began to be applied one day before the start of the championship) that it had a single strange mention that "climbing on the side of the cloud is illegal", and that mention was tied to the fact that this might not be considered an argument to be higher than the other pilots.

With this mention then, the evaluation committee reviews my situation and analyzes if I broke the rule by climbing higher than the base of the cloud, as I accepted in my interview, and they conclude that indeed, under the criteria of the FAI standard of the May 1, 2022, I did something wrong.

Now then the other part of the story appears: What is the sanction for this type of fault.

It turns out that the local regulations of the event did not have anything written about flying in clouds, so as Davis Straub noted, this gap must be filled with what section 7 says about it .

So, since I was indeed accused of flying in clouds, and I accepted that I used the side of the cloud to justify my additional height but that statement was not received, the director applied the sanction of flying in cloud, but unbelievably, and despite the fact that Davis Straub warned him, the sanction they applied of 20% of the points, which was not in the local regulations, nor was it supported by the international regulations, exceeded by 190 points the sanction for the first offense of flying in clouds, which is, as we copied above, only 10 points!

You don't have to be an expert then to see that my difference of 55 points with the first official place in the championship is nothing more than an improperly applied sanction, from a director who doesn't listen to reason or bother to sit down and talk with me, and that I was probably influenced by those who filed the cloud flight complaint(s) against me.

In summary: They applied a sanction 20 times more serious than the sanction defined for flying in clouds, and they did it without mentioning who reported me, nor being able to review or refute their reports, and despite the fact that the technical report with which they sanctioned me I was completely out of context. It was enough to have taken the time to review the animation in Ayvri, and see that I was not "thermalizing" inside the clouds as usually happens when there is really malicious flight in clouds (you see the pilot who continues to thermal in the same ascent as the others. And even if after that they wanted to insist on sanctioning me to make sure I stayed not just out of the clouds, but out of them.

Investigating and Reporting

It started innocently enough.

Belinda Boulter|Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Elena Filonova|Facebook|Flytec 6030|Gordon Rigg|Greg Kendall|Jamie Shelden|Jon "Jonny" Durand jnr|Kraig Coomber

https://ozreport.com/23.190.2

I do not recall how I found out about this issue. Jamie Shelden, the meet director and organizer probably told me about it. I received what I thought was Jonny Durand's Flymaster tracker track log in the morning on Friday the 20th for the task on Wednesday the 18th. I didn't look at the file using Notepad but rather displayed it on SeeYou and subsequently published the screen captures showing the difference between it and his 6030 the track log. If I had looked at the IGC file from what I thought was the Flymaster tracker using Notepad I would have seen that it was actually a "copy" of that file taken from the Airtribune web site.

I had already heard that there was no Live Tracking on the Flymaster Live Tracking web site for the Santa Cruz Flats Race. I also knew (but didn't connect) the fact that Belinda could follow the race on XCGuide with the group number that would normally be used on the Flymaster Live Tracking web site.

Daniel Velez, the remote scorekeeper, then informed me that there was another case of a missed turnpoint from the Wednesday task that needed to be corrected with the pilot's flight instrument. The track log that Daniel had showed him missing the last turnpoint so Daniel got Jamie to have Greg Kendall send in his track log from his 5030.

On Saturday the 21st, the last task after two days of not flying when there were high winds, we got two bogus track logs that required track logs from pilot's flight instruments be sent to Daniel, mine and Kraig Coomber's.

https://ozreport.com/23.193

Both Daniel and I were still referring to the track logs that he was downloading from the Airtribune web site as Flymaster tracker track logs, when in fact they were "copies" of the track logs from the Flymaster web site, and it would appear later not very good copies.

Not only were there missing track log points there was also the weird altitude values from the Airtribune tracklog points which got further above the track log points from the pilots' flight instruments the higher the pilot got. That still doesn't make any sense.

With this height discrepancy really bothering me (and apparently no one else except the always perceptive Gordon Rigg) I decided to look further into it.

https://ozreport.com/1569588107

I was beginning to suspect that something was wrong with the Flymaster trackers.

That's when I checked out my Flymaster track logs from the 2019 Big Spring Nationals against my 6030 track logs. I checked three flights. They were all identical. Whoa.

Finally I decided to look at the track log files using Notepad. Whoa again. The Flymaster tracks were certainly producing different designators for the trackers in the track logs from the SCFR. I still didn't get it but I was getting warmer.

After thinking about what was right in front of my face I thought to ask whether the track logs for the SCFR were coming from the Airtribune site and not the Flymaster web site. I was just hard for me to believe that this would actually be the case. I asked Daniel.

By the time he replied that they were indeed taking the track logs from the Airtribune web site I had already concluded that was the case.

I followed the data and kept looking and looking again and despite not just figuring it out when perhaps it should have been obvious I finally found enough clues to take me in the right direction and away from my preliminary and incorrect assumptions.

So I was left with the task of getting access to the Flymaster Live Tracking web site to download the actual Flymaster tracker track log files for the SCFR. So far that's not going very well. I've reached out to Jamie, Daniel, Brett, and even Kate who was our scorekeeper at the Big Spring Nationals and obviously did it right. I just want to confirm the theory that the actual Flymaster tracker's track logs don't have the drop out problem. Kate has told me that she didn't experience any dropouts during the Big Spring Nationals.

Finally on Monday morning I was able to get access to the Flymaster track logs on the Flymaster server for the Santa Cruz Flats Race. Crisiano at Flymaster was the one who gave me the final clue that I needed to be able to login to the correct account. After that it was trivial to download the files and check out the Flymaster tracker track logs against the Airtribune track logs.

The Flymaster tracker track log did not have the dropouts that the Airtribune tracks had. I had remembered that Brett had told me and others not to use the Airtribune track logs for scoring purposes only for Live Tracking. The problem was not placement of the trackers in the harnesses. Even Kraig Coomber's tracker worked just fine even though it was placed underneath his carbon back plate.

Elena Filonova wrote to me to say:

When you download the track log from Airtribune it is reprocessed by it and filters out baro data.

That explains the different altitude values displayed in the previous articles. Here is an example of the baro track from Jonny Durand's flight from the Flymaster tracker vs. the baro (now GPS) track from the Airtribune web site:

The blue line is the GPS altitude. Since you as the pilot are making decisions about how high you can go if you are flying under airspace based on your baro altitude, you might want to be sure that the scorekeeper is using your baro altitude and not GPS altitude to determine if you infringe on airspace or not.

When I get ready to launch I set my baro altitude at the GPS altitude of the launch site. This is easy to do with the Flytec 6030.

Kraig on the last day

Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Flytec 6030|Kraig Coomber|record|Volirium P1

At the first turnpoint, a 5 km cylinder around Signal Peak. Kraig's Flytec 6030 is set to record a track point every ten second. The blue line is the Flymaster Tracker:

Daniel Velez, the scorekeeper, writes:

On last day (Day 7) of the 2019 Santa Cruz Flats Race, in Open Class, we had an issue with Kraig Coomber's Flymaster track. His tracker went out a little more than 1 minute just on the first turnpoint. So his backup was used to validate his track.

But, this turned out to be also bad, as his backup tracker showed him crossing the goal second instead of first, by 3 seconds. So we wanted to score goal with Flymaster trackers for both Tyler and Kraig as the time interval between data points was much smaller than 10 seconds giving us a more precise time at goal and the goal times then agreed with what the pilot's felt was the case. But we wanted to validate the turnpoint.

So what I ended up doing was "manually" inserting the missing minute into the Flymaster IGC file, and scored the task with that track.

You now have original IGC filefrom the tracker, the original IGC file from the backup flight instrument, and the "mixed" IGC file from both that was used for scoring.  In the "mixed" IGC file you can easy see the "inserted" data, if you scroll down the file in a text editor, as the lines are "longer" so they are noticeable.

I also compare the "altitude" values in SeeYou for the Flymaster track log and the one from his 6030. The Flymaster displays an altitude up to 500' higher than the 6030:

I also compared the "altitude" values for my flight for the Flymaster Tracker, the Flytec 6030, and the Volirium P1:

The altitude values for the 6030 and the P1 are identical. The Flymaster tracker is quite a bit higher.

I also compared the "GPS altitude" values for all three instruments and they are identical:

Flymaster trackers dropping out

They aren't perfect devices, so we need your backup

On the same day, but at a different turnpoint, Greg Kendall also experienced his Flymaster tracker missing a turnpoint, just as Jonny's Flymaster tracker did.

Here are the two track logs, one of the Flymaster Tracker and one from Greg's 5030.

Let's take a little closer look:

The red line track is from his 5030 and the blue is from the Flymaster tracker.

Daniel Velez, the remote scorekeeper, finds the missing data from the Flymaster tracker:

Actually there is 1 minute and 06 seconds of missing info that the tracker had an "invalid" reception (as I understand) so it didn't recorded a position on the IGC file during that period.

B2132103259996N11127494WA0000001386

On the last day my Flymaster tracker quits recording data on my final glide to just short of goal. It stops when I'm a little over 3,000'. The red line is the Flymaster Tracker:

It was fortunate that Daniel caught this problem as it wasn't obvious unless you looked at the altitude data. Pilots might consider this if they see a result that shows you short of where you thought you landed. Daniel caught this before we saw any preliminary data.

Note that the Flymaster tracker also consistently records a higher GPS altitude than the 6030's barometric altitude, even though they start at the same altitude:

Your Flymaster tracker might show you going into airspace, while your 6030 shows you below the floor of the airspace. You might want to check with the scorekeeper if you find yourself penalized for air space infringements that your 6030 showed you avoiding.

Greet the Alps that yesterday served as the backdrop for the “infinite” flight of the protagonists of the XXII edition of the Hang Gliding World Championships, the ninth task returned completely to Italy, with a length of 95.5 km to travel from Monte Valinis to Bordon.

The race direction opted for a flight day in the south-western area of Friuli Venezia Giulia, with buoys in Montereale Valcellina, Malnisio and Pian del Cansiglio before the long return to Bordano, anticipated by the last turning point near Buja.

The pilots were able to follow - at least in the initial phase - a line on the mountain ridges, which allowed quite high speeds at the expense of not too generous quotas (in general it flew at 5-600m, much lower than yesterday due to the lack of good thermals).

The first to cross the buoy near Montereale were the Swiss Peter Neuenschwander (author of a very interesting World Championship so far and currently sixth in the individual classification with 5807 points), Franz Hermann and Zac Majors (also yesterday brought to light in the initial phases), however, having to stop before the Piancavallo to take altitude, finding one of the best thermals of the day of about 4m/s.

Ruhmer, the Canadian Smith and also our young Laurenzi, then carried on trying to escape to the Pian del Cansiglio, deviating on the fastest trajectory over the plain, gaining about 3km on the pursuers but having then to make height and consequently re-enter on the own steps. The group formed by the Italians Ciech, Ploner, Oppici, the Brazilians Sandoli and Pinto, Neuenschwander and Ruhmer, managed to climb up to 500m, finding a good current above Castello di Aviano, with Laurenzi having to beaten but managing to recover soon afterwards and turning the buoy near the Piancavallo in the first positions at a reasonable speed.

In the long return to Buja, the competitors have in fact alternated the plain with the mountain, to find the right compromise that would guarantee them adequate speed and altitude without losing too much time. Meanwhile, yesterday's splendid winner Eduardo Oliveira was reported in difficulty, perhaps tried by the fatigues of task 8, which required considerable energy expenditure for all; even worse it went to the Italian Selenati, who played it all for opting for the second start, pulling as much as he could, but unfortunately landing beforehand: a praise, however, due to his resourcefulness.

In the vicinity of Meduno, Ruhmer and Laurenzi have chosen two slightly different trajectories but for both of them the first real moment of difficulty occurred in this world, desperately forced to look for altitude above Clauzzetto. Ruhmer managed to climb the 600m while Laurenzi, after having seriously risked landing outside the goal, entered an appreciable thermal. It went better to the pursuer group formed by Ciech, Kato, Ploner, Pinto, Velez and Oppici, who over Travesio, opting for a line on the ridges, have reached a safety altitude of about 1000m of altitude guaranteeing the possibility of flying calmly until next turning point and then aim directly at landing.

The turning point came a few kilometers later: while most of the pilots, once they gained altitude, deviated towards the south, Neuenschwander and Gricar preferred to continue turning a thermal, which led them to lengthen the route a bit, but allowing them to launch later a few minutes at crazy speed towards Buja's last buoy. On the way to Bordano, a few kilometers away as the crow flies, Ruhmer (who in the meantime had taken the reins of the "paying" group but about 200m above sea level against the Swiss-Austrian duo) was overtaken at more than 80km/h from Gricar, who has thus flown in goal by touching the ground of the landing field first, anticipating the same Ruhmer and Neuenschwander. "Tactical" day for Italy, with Ploner and Ciech respectively sixteenth and seventeenth: waiting for the publication of the official rankings, we will have to watch our back in the last task from Gricar, Alonzi, Crossingham and Neunschwander (these last four fighting for at least for the last step of the podium). Instead, the situation in the team standings should be calmer, where our Azzurri had 1922 points ahead of Brazil and 2326 of Germany ahead of today's task, now winner with Gricar and fifth with Woehrle. Here too the battle for third place is on, with Germany at 16828 points, Japan at 16447 points and Austria at 16387 points, obviously after this task.

Malcolm Brown writes:

Goal field at the Hang Gliding World Championships in northern Italy. I'm feeling tired after 5 hours flying and a 201km flight to goal. This probably ranks as one of my most memorable flights in 30 years of flying hang gliders. The mountains we flew over today are absolutely stunning. I had my doubts about coming here but I was so wrong.

Matjaz Klemencic writes:

Big task was called today at 200 km taking us from Cercivento north to Austria, over Greifenburg, then to Sillian and back to a bit further from Hermagor. I got to the takeoff where at briefing I noticed my Oudie didn't charge yesterday. I must have mistakenly put the cable in and it was 50% battery was ready for 200km. I managed to charge it a bit with power bank from Evan, thank you so much for that.

Since I was running around making this all happen I somehow managed to make a bigger start cylinder which put me back already at start. I flew quite good after and was with Manfred and rest of the gang after Greifenburg. Here the decision of the day was made as we flew over the valley into shitty area with slow speed and horrifying place to fly over so low. I lost the group and had scratched the ridge to get to the Sillian turnpoint.

Then I flew back to Lienz where I got to 3000m and the direct line was tempting again. I crossed the ridge at about 20 m and found out the landing areas are quite further out then expected. Quite some struggle but I made it out of the trap and went ridge racing towards Hermagor. I was too happy with the nice lift on the way and flew to easily only to find that last part is in complete shade and without any lift. I decked in at about 10k short.

Pilots took other lines that were far better today so I am once again not really happy with my performance. Every day I start good, fly a part with good gaggle but somehow I lose the tempo and get myself somewhere in some shitty place. At least I got my wing to climb well today finally, did some strange settings on my wing with turning things the opposite way it should be. Cost me quite some climbing during the race. Now resting time as tomorrow is yet another task.

"When the going gets tough the tough begin to play." In the aftermath of the extraordinary feat of the Italian Alex Ploner, who in fact dominated task 7 with a masterpiece of wit and tactical wisdom seasoned with a clear knowledge of the Friulian skies, the race direction opted for a task not only incredibly long (well over 200km) but even with a landing outside the Italian borders, in neighboring Austria. The dress rehearsals had already been staged a few days ago, with the turning point of task 4 - won from the Alto Cassino di San Cassiano - in the area of Caporetto, in Slovenia. The pilots unanimously asked to be able to engage in even more demanding flights and, once the weather allowed safety on all fronts, they were satisfied with a real mission to the limit of the impossible.

Before moving on to the story of the day, one can not but spend words of praise for Flyve, AeroClub Italia and AeroClub Lega Piloti, who with so many efforts have succeeded in giving to protagonists and enthusiasts something never experienced before even in the maximum expression of this sport , or the world championship competition. Absolute novelty also that concerning the take-off: the nearly 120 remaining in the race have "tasted" today another characteristic mountain of Carnia and precisely the Monte Crostis, Valsecca, in the municipality of Ravascletto, taking flight already from a very high altitude at 1900m . Another wonderful place from which they were able to admire a breathtaking panorama, an appetizer of an epic challenge that surely wrote a page about the history of hang gliding.

The Czech Dan Vyhnalik was among the first to come out in the direction of the first mark; the Dutch Tanzer together with the American Zac Majors, opted instead for a different trajectory. Selenati, after about twenty minutes of the race, took the reins of the flight with speeds that reached almost 90km/h and over, taking advantage of the positive effects of the mountain ranges of the district, trying to imitate yesterday's exploits of compatriot Ploner.

The Colombian Daniel Velez together with the Czech Peter Polach (who delighted the public during the daily live broadcast with live images from his hang glider), closed the gap in a short time, as Selenati was forced to stop to gain overtaken share from the big group positioned higher than him. Having left to make the difference and seek redemption, the strong Friulian had to surrender after a few kilometers, landing unfortunately out of goal. At the turning point in the area of Emberg, where practically everyone arrived following the optimized line, the first to turn was the Swiss Neuenschwander, followed by the Japanese Nagusa, Velez, Smith, Polach and also by our Christian Ciech, second in general individual at 168 points from compatriot Ploner.

Another Japanese person came to light shortly after and we talk about Minoru Kato: taking advantage of one of the classic flying styles of gliders called in technical jargon "a dolphin" (which allows not having to search for thermals flying in fact directed towards the goal at variable speed), was the first to gain the third buoy, followed by Polach, Klemencic, Gricar, Ruhmer, Ploner and the young but enterprising Manuel Revelli, later forced to abandon hostilities even before so many others, a clear sign of the great difficulties today. On the long journey to the cylinder including the area of Sillian, a municipality in the Upper Val Pusteria in East Tyrol, the group fragmented and Neuenschwander also opted for a very different line than the head line which instead preferred the trajectory more short.

Ciech, Ruhmer, Klemencic, Ploner, Oppici and the German Gerd Doenhuber composed the head of the race, advancing more than 90 km/h along the crest of the mountains. The Swiss, with great intuition, has accumulated more than 1000m of difference compared to the others, flying sent to over 105km/h and soon rejoining at the head of the race. As happened to Revelli, in the vicinity of this buoy even the strong Brazilian Glauco Pinto had to land, as did Selenati (see above) and Tanzer who had to say goodbye practically at the same time to dreams of glory.

Meanwhile, the splendid day allowed Markel Neiderman of Sweden to reach 4049m of altitude on his Combat GT, practically a record in this World Championship. A few dozen kilometers from the finish, the head of the race - who chose the optimized trajectory - was formed by the Japanese Kato and among others by the Brazilian Oliveira, by the English Crossingham, by the Germans Woehrle and Gricar, by the French Pollet and Alonzi and from our Oppici and Ploner.

Before the final sprint, at Hermagor (minus 25km on arrival), Gricar and Oliviera opted for full altitude (with thermals of even 6m/s); Minoru Kato together with Pollet, authors of a superlative performance up to that point, instead found themselves in great difficulty losing altitude and for the Japanese there was nothing to do but land before their due, when there was very little to the goal. The Brazilian has thus concluded in first goal after more than four hours of flight (entirely covered by the live broadcast on the official FB page), followed by Crossingham and Gricar. First of the Italians in goal Ploner (fifth) followed by Oppici: Brazil plays the charge and warns our National team, called to defend the 1825 points that separated it from the South Americans at the end of yesterday's task. There will be fun and the last two days of competition (we remind you that from tomorrow to tomorrow the final day of rest will take place and for this reason we invite you to follow the updates on the official FB page) will announce themselves not suitable for the faint of heart.

Alex hung with Christian and Manfred but always 1000' or so higher as they approached the second to last turnpoint. When the three of them out in front of all the other pilots headed toward goal (and the last little turnpoint) Christian was a bit too low as was Manfred. Alex with his extra altitude just kept going and was able to get there three to 1 minutes earlier. Extra altitude helps.

http://www.italy2019.com/2019/07/22/imprendibile-ploner-solo-laustriaco-ruhmer-limita-i-danni-terzo-in-goal-un-ottimo-filippo-oppici/

Start from Mount Cuarnan and after a few kilometers, all the pilots have opted for the full altitude on the nearby and well-known Chiampon, an area that usually always gives very good thermals.

At the "ready to go" Peter Polach (Czech Republic), Mario Alonzi (Brazil), Daniel Velez (Colombia), Yuji Suzuki (Japan) and an Australian athlete, at important speeds already over 80 km/h. Selenati, as has often happened in these days from deep knowledge of the Friulian skies, has almost immediately set a different trajectory, followed also by other pilots.

Proceeding towards the first two buoys located in the area of Treppo Carnico and in that of Rigolato, a group including the Polish Przezdziak has managed to gain altitude, seizing a thermal with values higher than 7m/s able to lead them to almost 2800m of quote.

At the first turn point Arne Tanzer (the Dutch fort once again came to light) showed up; behind him, among others, Daniel Velez, John Smith (New Zealand), Galovec, Peternel and Klemencic for Slovenia and Gervasoni for Italy. Velez was able to immediately dig a discreet groove, taking the reins of the task in the direction of Rigolato, also flying over the "Kaiser" or the Monte Zoncolan, climbed yesterday by many indomitable cyclists participating in the Gran Fondo "Carnia Classic Fuji - Zoncolan".

In a real alpine flight, most of the pilots immediately understood how fundamental it was to continue to gain altitude: to confirm this, before flying over the Fella, several stopped to look for "breath" and at the top of the race the Austrian Ruhmer is brought along with Alonzi and Velez, with Ploner to lead the blue patrol.

In order to avoid unpleasant surprises, at Gemona, most have abandoned the shorter trajectory above the plain, thus flying over the Regional Natural Park of the Julian Prealps, following the ridge that develops for about 50km and that in favorable weather conditions such as those of today, allowed everyone to maintain a safety quota up to the cylinder placed near Slovenia. However, some of the men of the standings have tried to follow the low profile: among them the Slovenian Matjaz Klemencic, the Czech Peter Polach and the Polish Przezdziak, making it very difficult to continue.

In the skies between Nimis and Attimis, while some pilots were forced to land out of goal considering the very selective task (including Przezdziak himself), Italy took command of the flight thanks to Ciech and Ploner. The meteorological situation was fully captured by the leading group, which turned the last buoy a little further away than the optimized line but with stronger thermal guarantees and greater altitude. On the way back to Bordano, when there were only 20km to go, Ploner managed to get Ruhmer and Ciech off the ground by scoring first with a spectacular tack that sent shivers down the ground. Only the Austrian, detached by about 4 'resisted, because from the third onwards the detachments became heavy beyond 10', demonstrating the superlative task carried out by the South Tyrolean. Another Italian, Filippo Oppici, completed the podium with an excellent performance and the German Primoz Gricar came fourth, with Ciech delayed by the lack of "fuel" on the most beautiful but author of a splendid fifth place.

John Simon took the second clock twenty five minutes after the 1:45 PM clock. He was 21st into goal.

Nene and Georg Schweier landed in the river bed just outside the goal cylinder getting within 90 and 40 meters respectively. They both made the end of speed section. Their distance points were very slightly less than those who made goal, but their speed points were reduced by 20 percent.

After the grueling day yesterday (much appreciated by all the pilots also for the encroachment in Slovenia that gave them unique scenarios), today's task has developed from the Valinis mountain to the by now tested Bordano landing, with a covered length of almost 100km, practically all on the plain.

Three buoys are planned, with a sort of "zig zag": after taking off from Valinis, the pilots headed towards the area between Povoletto and Cividale del Friuli (a very large cylinder) and then headed towards Rivoli di Osoppo, Tarcento and finally return to Bordano at the landing field.

The start of today's task has been of fundamental importance since it causes a very different weather situation from yesterday (damp air in the lower layers has led to a reduction in the cumulative base altitude of 1500-1700m against even 2300m yesterday, not allowing pilots to develop immediately a lot of altitude as pointed out by Damiano Zanocco weather manager), the pilots immediately had to choose between the way of the plain (faster but very risky today) and the one that skirted the hills (longer but more likely to find thermal).

A group of about ten pilots opted for the "low street", but the choice was rather risky because after a few kilometers more than someone, including the New Zealander Matthew Barlow, they were forced to land early in the Buja area. The most correct intuition turned out to be that of the group of the best in the standings, with - among others - the Austrian Ruhmer (yesterday penalized for an early start), the Italians Ploner, Laurenzi and Ciech, the Slovenian Klemencic, who proceeded towards the first target at about 1000m altitude with a speed of 55 km/h. Among them were the two Japanese Tanaka and Sunama and the Brazilian top pilot Glauco Pinto, who went on to form the leading group together with the German Woehrle and Ruhmer himself.

In the return to Rivoli di Osoppo, the Dutchman Arne Tanzer, who in a previous task had given a hard time to his opponents, who has opted to fly over the flat area not without risks, forced to stop before reach the second buoy in a desperate search for altitude to continue his adventure. Even the Italian Suan Selenati chose this strategy, managing to maintain an altitude of 500m but still struggling to find altitude.

Pinto, Woehrle and Selenati have won it by turning around the second turn with the best time and continuing the race, or rather the flight, towards Tarcento after about an hour and forty minutes.

In fact, a situation has emerged with three groups: the one farther north that managed to make a great deal, the central one that touched the second mark in the first position and the one further south, which instead took longer to tack towards the last turn point. On the way to Tarcento, once it has gained enough altitude, the small group of Ciech, Ruhmer, Tanzer and Laurenzi veered towards the route chosen by Pinto, Woehrle and Selenati, in the hope of being able to proceed without the last obstacle. Further stops towards Bordano. Between Artegna and Magnano many pilots have benefited from the so-called "service pump", that is a very strong thermal that usually develops in these areas and that allowed the Colombian Daniel Velez to take the lead allatask towards the final part of the race, followed by Tanzer and the Italian Marco Laurenzi, once again among the leaders albeit at his second experience in a world championship, a high hopeful driver for our national team. The Austrian Ruhmer, the Italian Ploner, the Germans Gricar and Doenhuber and the same Laurenzi have embarked on a thrilling pursuit of Velez, with Ruhmer who hired a great duel with the Colombian at around 15km from the finish overtaking and counter-passing, managing to win and quickly gaining precious seconds.

The most beautiful surprise for the public was the group that presented itself above Bordano fighting for the success of the day, made up of more than ten hang gliders that at speeds greater than 100 km/h gave great excitement to the fans: the Dutch Tanzer and the Italians Laurenzi and Ploner were the first three pilots to touch the ground, under the watchful eyes of the team leader Flavio Tebaldi who thus demonstrated, once again if there was any need, the great technical skills capable of getting the off to the Azzurri in the various rankings.

Italy, led by Flavio Tebaldi, is still confirmed as a team to beat, with four drivers scoring in the top five. Only the stainless Austrian Ruhmer resists.

Third task, particularly short, not easy due to the variable weather conditions that have caused difficulties for all the national teams, which have adopted various strategies to try to get by. A very different situation from yesterday, typical "pre frontal" with destabilization in the low strata and a cold disturbance coming from the Veneto region - as explained by the "meteoman" of the organization Damiano Zanocco - has meant that the plain is "awakened", allowing pilots at least partially to be able to risk even the fastest but also risky line.

Selenati immediately took altitude, moving after a few km from the start to more than 1000m, together with team-mate Ciech, Klemenich (SLO), Ruhmer (AUT), Garcia (ESP) and Polach (CZ), trying to exploit the plain towards the first of the two turning points of the day, located in the specific case near Cividale del Friuli, the splendid town founded by Giulio Cesare who became Lombard capital of Friuli in his time. The route then included the return flying over the hilly area of ??the middle Friuli also touching Mount Bernadia near Nimis (another place well known by local flight enthusiasts), before "touching" the second buoy near Gemona and landing as always in Bordano.

Few pilots chose the longest trajectory near the ridge, which allowed them to gain altitude faster but having to complete more kilometers to reach the first buoy in Cividale; only the Slovenian Stanislav Galovec dared to start from the third window made available by the organization, but found itself flying by itself without any reference.

At the first turning point came in the order Ruhmer (AUT), Ciech (ITA) and Sandoli (BRA), who anticipated Laurenzi (ITA), Glauco Pinto (the very strong reigning Brazilian champion with many records also on distance) and the Slovenian Matjaz Klemencic. Given the difficult weather conditions, some drivers had to "raise the white flag" landing well before reaching the goal: even Pinto himself had to surrender shortly after Cividale and this was the real coup of the day.

Misfortune also for the only woman in the race, the Japanese Sato, who suffered an accident "piercing" out of goal: immediate rescue operations taken from the operations center in Tolmezzo, where three people are constantly on the monitors and follow the pilots' tracks. In close collaboration with the Alpine Rescue Service, the athlete was reached and transported to the hospital for the necessary ritual checks; his condition does not cause concern and a good "good luck" prompt recovery has come from the whole movement.

Tanzer, class of '89, Dutch, then tried to escape while losing a bit of altitude; the "sail" was pursued by Ploner, Laurenzi, Ruhmer, Ciech and Selenati, who tried to fly as fast as possible to the second and final turning point, maintaining an average altitude of 1000 m which actually allowed them to reach Bordano in a short time. Not having to stop in search of thermals, on the landing field our Ploner champion, the Austrian Ruhmer, the excellent young promise of the flight (Flyve branded) Marco Laurenzi, Christian Ciech and the Suan Selenati from Friuli arrived which thus completed the masterpiece "made in Italy".

This is the ranking of the first drivers in goal. Once the scoring system has been developed that takes into account different variables, the final one will be published on this site: https://airtribune.com/22nd-fai-world-hg-championship/results. On the official FB page of the event and on the website www.italy2019.com, the same will be done and specifically the evening will be published the provisional ranking of the day and the following morning instead, the general official one.

Wills Wing Sport 3 Vs. U2

A smaller difference than you might think

competition|Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|record|Steven "Steve" Pearson

Steve Pearson writes:

There's much less performance difference at speed than than one might think.

There are two recent examples to support the relative performance parity, El Penon 2018 and 2019.

https://airtribune.com/el-penon-classic-race-2018/results

https://airtribune.com/el-penon-classic-race-2019/results

The El Penon Sport Class meet is big air racing. In 2018 it became a match race with two world-class pilots, Daniel flying a U2 145 against Rudy on the proto S3 155. I replayed their glides on Airtribune and couldn't believe how fast they were flying, sometimes over 80 kph between thermals.

Rudy would slowly climb through Daniel and then lose 100 to 200 feet on the 5k glide at 50% above best glide speed. That exchange repeated several times with Rudy keeping pace with Daniel until Daniel eventually prevailed.

In 2019 Daniel flew an S3 against a mixed field of S3s and U2s and won again. This time Rudy was flying a U2 but he was a little disadvantaged by taking off late while administering the meet.

The bottom line is that the better pilot will win independent of choosing an S3 or U2. What the S3 gives up in high speed glide, it makes up for in climb. I can thermal an S3 155 at the stall speed of a U2 145.

Calvin Hadley writes:

I have flown both, but a long time since I have flown a u2 with four years of flying a T2C between. Every time I fly the Sport 3 I am amazed at the climb rate the Sport 3 has and amazed at the glide it has. In my opinion it is a very high performance glider and I love the lightness, which older people would love.

Luke Waters writes:

Luke Waters I can't think of a pilot who I'd recommend buy a U2 instead of a S3.

David Aldrich writes:

I can - someone newish, up-and-coming and looking to eventually fly a topless glider. The U2 is a much better "transition" glider in that it flies more like a high aspect ratio glider then a S3 (which flies more like a low aspect ratio glider.) Pilots who spend a season or two or three on a U2 generally seem to have a much better time on the T2/T3.

Steven Pearson writes:

David Aldrich that’s right. The U2 is best suited as a transition to or from a T2.

Daniel Velez Bravo writes:

U2 and U2C are for those who wants to out perform the other sport class pilots in competition flying. S3's are for those pilots that don't care about beating everybody else (but its happy if it happens from time to time) and want to enjoy the all around performance of a nice sport class glider, landing with a nice smile every time even when outperformed by a U2 sky dog.

I love the S3 and would recommend it for casual flying and for some XC adventures with low stress in mind. But would go for a U2 if I'm into competition flying, personal records or are looking for moving up to a topless glider at some point.

On my winning El Peñon classic race  2018, I'm confident that the U2 gave me the possibility to keep up with Rudy on his S3, playing it safe, pulling out that extra performance at the end.

This year 2019 flying the S3 was more demanding. I knew that I couldn't afford to be side by side with a U2 when getting to final glide, nor even with Zac with his higher s3 loading and fast glide experience. Rudy was not only too worried about organization but was also on a bigger 160 U2 that's not an advantage when climbs are over 2.5m/s average and glides where fast.

Just one last thing, during the 2019 competition on the S3 I got stuck low during a task and would have probably landed if I was on a U2 but the S3 gave me the confidence (sense of control) to deal with broken lift drifting over small landings and climb out. So when low, I prefer to be on a S3 and when high I would love to be on the U2.

Final results, and the ringers

CIVL|competition|Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Sara Weaver|Zac Majors

Well this is all pretty confusing.

Major Majors reports that the first four finishers were excluded from the final results. That would be these four ringers:

Name
1 Daniel Velez
2 Zac Majors
3 Rodolfo Gotes
4 Wolfgang Siess

But the links shown under the picture of three of these guys (without trophies) on the podium still have them in the results. I'm going to guess that she means that their names have been taken out of the FSDB file sent to CIVL. (Hopefully all the actual scores were readjusted also.)

Then there is this statement regarding the "real" Sport Class pilots:

First place was Alfredo Tello Toledo (Potro) but he did not use Airtribune for registration so I'm using his brother Fermin (Poni) for filling up his place.

I couldn't figure that out.

But finally, at least a little clarity, the women:

1st Sara Weaver
2nd Patricia Garcia de Letona
3rd Emma Godinez

Rudy on the mentors being scored

At the El Peñón Classic Race 2018

Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Mitchell "Mitch" Shipley|Mitch Shipley

Rudy Gotes <<rudy>> writes:

We are now on day three at the race here in Peñón, Valle de Bravo. I would like to explain why we are racing only a sport class competition.

The sport class pilots here in Mexico and a few pilots from other parts of the world that love to compete here are now almost all sport class. I invited Daniel Velez to help me with Airtribune. Mitch Shipley is also here as meet director and a few days ago he gave a clinic on landings. Also with my experience we are preparing the sport class pilots to become more efficient and faster pilots.

Also El Peñón flying site is known for having few landing places and in this competition we are are doing tasks that are always in range to a good landing area. Mitch and I give advice of how to make it less risky by pointing out the options for good landing places.

I know that Daniel and I have a lot more experience, and we have a trophy for the real sport class pilots, but the plan is learn and improve.

Daniel, yet again. This seems so unfair to the newer pilots

competition|Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Lawrence "Pete" Lehmann|Pete Lehmann

https://airtribune.com/el-penon-classic-race-2018/results

We give a 40% bonus to Falcon pilots, and 6% to Sport 2 pilots. I see that Rudy doesn't get any bonus (compared to the U2) for his Sport 3. We don't let top ranked pilots fly in sport class. Of course, I guess we could and give them a big handicap.

USA fourth by six points.

Zac Majors:

Penalized for dangerous approach and landing on the Esplanada north field. Left E,S,S, probably with no margin to reach the goal field, seen that since his glide from P55, and also when crossing the lake towards E.S.S., he had encountered unstable air, so after reaching E.S.S. he could either find lift or sink on his way to goal, and at that point he would have to perform an improbable 14.8 L/D to clear obstacles at the entrance of the goal field. Pilot proceeded on this dire situation and arrived at the goal area with no height to clear the power lines. Dived under them on high risk maneuver and crash landed.

New site in Colombia

New site in Colombia

Near Medellin

Alejandro Isaza|Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Daniel Vélez Bravo|video

Alejandro Isaza <<alejoisaza>> writes:

It's been raining a lot this past week around here (Medellin, Colombia) and a landslide on a major road blocked us from reaching two of our closest flying sites. So I started to look for another site close by (with the help of Google Earth) and after two trips on my motorcycle I found a good place.

So this past Saturday we, Daniel Velez, Ani, his wife, and I went there to give it a try. As we got there rain was pouring, but after it stopped the skies cleared and we took off for a very nice flight. A long beautiful glide that ended on a gentle slope.

Ridge Racing at Canoa, 2015

A real test of glider performance

Christian Ciech|Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Dustin Martin|Fausto Arcos|Manfred Ruhmer|Raul Guerra|video

Fausto Arcos <<faustoa>> writes:

From October 31st until November 2nd top pilots from Austria, Italy, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, USA and Ecuador will be racing the famous Canoa Ridges to claim the King of The Ridge title. Christian Ciech, Tom Weissenberger (current King of the Ridge), Daniel Velez, Rudy Gotes, Raul Guerra and all the Ecuadorian gang will be there. Competition is FAI 2 with two classes: open and sport.

This a fun, relaxed but serious race for expert and intermediate pilots. Watch: https://youtu.be/S8jp8_zSW58

Competition, registration and useful info: https://airtribune.com/canoaopen2015/info/details__info

Additional info: <faustoarcos>

Dustin Martin <<flydustin>> writes:

It will have live tracking according to Raul. Plus I'm taunting Weissenberger and Manfred, who are both apparently coming, which is probably a lot like taunting a bear. So it should be pretty entertaining.

Also as you know the Canoa race is the only pure glider performance comp that pretty much isolates pilot skill from the result. Assuming everyone is capable of flying efficiently and tagging turns well. So I figured a true comparison would interest your readers. Christian was confirmed but has a detached retina and imminent surgery. Manfred may take his place according to Raul. Will Moyes be sending someone to back up Tom?

I communicated with Manfred tonight about his decision to go right of course line before heading to the last turnpoint and then goal. He climbed to over 4000 meters before heading out and was able to easily make goal.

Day 3 Hombre Pajaro. My field for the day.

Glided through 3 km of moderate rain to get the first turnpoint then joined Rudy and Daniel in a thermal on the downwind/gust front side of the shower. Gust fronts are usually mild here. Turbulence

Daniel Vélez Bravo|Daniel Vélez Bravo|video

http://youtu.be/TQJAokQQbmI

Fluid dynamics and combustion are beautiful, complex, and ubiquitous, but often times, the natural beauty of these every-day flows and flames are invisible to our eyes. By using high-speed video and schlieren imaging, we image a strike-anywhere match being lit and then blown out, visualizing the otherwise invisible, startlingly beautiful combustion and turbulent phenomena. From start to finish, the entire video took less than two seconds to film, but high-speed imaging slows down the events so we can observe them; schlieren imaging enables us to visualize the hot combustion products mixing with the cold breath, which highlights the complexity and huge range of scales in turbulence. With this video, we aim to not only entertain and wow, but to also spark curiosity and interest in combustion and fluid dynamics.

For Task 1 the conditions died down, but it was still good, predictable with less white caps and gusts on the ocean. Pilots who didn't slow down had to land. One guy had a hard landing at the street right beneath the ridge. But it has four lines with less traffic, just a power line to the beach side to get over.

Conditions during Task 2 were better with consistent wind the whole run until sunset. It was a close race with 2-time winner Daniel Velez. My lowest altitude was 21 m AGL. Too bad the ridge isn't longer.

Hombres Pajaro Colombia 2015 at Roldanillo from January 24th thru the 31st. I am glad to announce that we will be holding the competition again next year for the 6th year running and already have a large number of international pilots assuring us they will attend. Last year we had a great meet with pilots like Pedro Garcia from Spain (First place), Daniel Velez from Colombia (Second place), Zac Majors (Third place) from the USA, Dustin Martin, Raul Guerra, Wolfi Seiss from Austria amongst many others. Pilots came from Mexico, USA, Guatemala, Ecuador, Venezuela, Spain, Austria and Colombia.

On Facebook there is some interesting information, pictures and videos at Hombres Pajaro Colombia. We had prize money for the first three Open Class pilots, US$5,000 for 1st, US$2,000 for 2nd and US$1,000 for 3rd. I am working on getting this same amount for this year as well. We will also have our Sport Class at this comp and hope to have some prize money for them as well. I will come back with this info further on.

This will be a CAT 2 FAI event. This should be taken care of before the end of next week.

This event is a great venue for those pilots that want to train for the upcoming worlds in Valle del Bravo. We are confident that the weather will be great, as the El Nino is being expected in Colombia for the end of this year and this translates into great flying weather with high cloud bases which will allow for tasks of over 100 kms every day of the competition.

We look forward to new pilots at this competition so you can experience the great flying that we have in Roldanillo. As many of you may be aware we have had two PWC Events here (one the super final) and we will be holding the Paragliding Worlds here this January as well (two weeks before our comp).

http://hombrespajaro.blogspot.com.au/

In the air again! The day was quite good, but still quite demanding. The task set for the Open Class was a 113.6km route and 52.9km for the Sport Class. A single start gate for everyone; both classes shared the first part of the flight and had the same goal field: another HUGE paddock, this time grassy.

Ten Open Class pilots made it in. They all agreed it was not an easy 113km to fly! They came in little groups making us jump up after we thought nobody else would make it. Many of the other pilots not in goal, still got to fly around 4 hours, not bad eh? Pedro Garcia on his T2C flew in first again today; he seems to be on fire! Daniel Vélez is second and Zac third.

The day was much more promising than yesterday, no cloud on take off and the sun was shy, but visible alright! Cloud formations on both mountain ranges were visible as well as some clouds out in the valley; looking good!

Task Committees and Meet Director decided to send the Class I pilots on a 114km task with an initial leg of 8km to the "Bolivar Antenna", then crossing the valley southeast to San Pedro (north of Buga); from there they flew up north to Obando and back a little ways south to the HUGE goal field!

When we looked out the door this morning, the sky was grey and a high layer of clouds didn't make it look promising… However, let's not forget this is Roldanillo! After the cloud finally raised over launch, subtle thermaling conditions started to be visible and the hint of a fine day was perceptible.

This new take off is definitely offering lots of new experiences. Today, for instance, we had the largest crowd I have ever witnessed at a hang gliding competition!

Canoa Open 2013

Lots of international pilots

Alejandro Riera|Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Fausto Arcos|Rafael Arcos|Raul Guerra|video|Wills Wing|Wills Wing T2C

Daniel Vélez Bravo <<danielvelezbravo>> writes:

The Canoa Open Hang Gliding Speed Ridge competition took place last week from October 31st to November 2nd.

Average speeds from 48km/h to 53km/h during the racing days.

The event was attended by a nice delegation of local pilots from Ecuador, a few pilots from Peru, about ten pilots from Venezuela and three pilots from Colombia. They had a sport class race and an open class race.

The conditions where average, with not too much wind but enough for the standard task (about 45.9 km) on the first day, the short one (41km) on the second and the long one (about 46.2km) on the third and last day for the open class.

On the first day I got a good lead on my T2C 144 with custom home made "Icaro cardboard tips", followed by Raul Guerra and Fausto Arcos, with no real surprises there as the Venezuelan team was quite new to this kind of ridge speed racing format.

Nevertheless Andrés Riera, a young pilot from Venezuela that landed short on the first day, appeared really strong on the second task, pushing hard on front where we shared the lead as a Formula 1 race, changing positions maybe three times. I finally pushed a little harder at the end and got a lead by 16 seconds in front of him. Raul Guerra got in third for the day (If I recall right. I haven't got the scores to share yet).

The third task wasn't a walk in the park as the wind wasn't that strong and the committee decided the long task, so we went on some long-slow glides to get to one turnpoint out north. Fortunately, I got a good start and even when it seems that I was losing a lot of my advantage when slowing down, I got to keep up the lead on Andrés Riera, who was also pushing hard in second place. We went on some risky low glides without stopping at all, where the other pilots where doing one or two passes for height. I crossed the line with only eight seconds to spare in front of Andres, and almost didn't climb back up to get back to the landing place 3 km out, finishing 1st overall.

Raul and Fausto had a close encounter when racing towards the compression zone on one of the lowest and more difficult ridges, and Fausto decided that it was too much and bailed out to short land, losing his third overall to Jelko Loor.

Raul on his Moyes got in 4th or 5th of the day, but with enough advantage to be second overall.

Even though the racing with Raul and his Moyes glider wasn't as close and personal as 2012 race, Andres Riera was putting a lot of pressure and speed at the front.

On the sport class the winner Jacob Espinosa was flying as aggressive and fast as the open class gliders on his Icaro MastR glider, followed by Cesar Clavijo and Alan Arcos on 2nd and 3rd.

Maybe next year the "Americans" won't be finding an easy win, as "Latin America" is getting bold and speedy every day.

Some pictures and detailed "Spanish" stories on my blog. Maybe I throw a short edited video sometime this week.

Flytec tip of the week - Speed to fly on Final Glide

Flytec tip of the week - Speed to fly on Final Glide

L/D gnd and L/D req

Daniel Vé|Daniel Vélez Bravo|Flytec 6030|Steve Kroop

Steve Kroop at Flytec <<info>> writes:

A few years back I was discussing final glide on the 6030 with Daniel Velez. The 6030 will tell you the ideal speed-to-fly for final glide based on the strength of your last climb assuming that you climb in that last thermal to Alt a WP = 0 and that lift/sink on the glide net zero. Daniel's point was what happens if you get a particularly good or bad glide on final, what speed should you fly? For example, if in your last thermal you climb to Alt a WP = 0 and your average climb rate was 600 ft/min (3m/s) you would go out on final glide with a speed ring setting of 600 ft/min (3m/s). However, if you fly through a long period of sink you will likely have to slow down because you will no longer be able to make goal at that speed ring setting. Daniel's point was, what is the new speed ring setting?

There is another situation where there would be some question as to the correct speed ring setting on final glide and that is if you are unable to climb to Alt a WP = 0 in the last thermal (e.g., the thermal tops-out or there is some form of altitude restriction). In this case, when you go on final, you cannot fly a speed ring setting equivalent to your last climb because you did not acquire sufficient altitude. Again what speed do you fly?

The answer to both of these situations is found by using two straight forward but very helpful user-fields L/D gnd and L/D req. When on glide, if you control your speed so L/D gnd = L/D req (your actual current glide ratio over the ground and the glide ratio required to make it to the waypoint) then you are flying the correct speed to arrive at goal at 0' AGL and the McCready pointer (radial line in the vario dial) will be indicating the corresponding speed ring setting.

The McCready pointer reflects the best speed ring setting from your current position to goal - well at least until the situation changes again. Some caution here, flying the speed where L/D gnd = L/D req is generally not advisable unless it is abundantly clear that conditions on course line are becoming more favorable. It is prudent to back off of the speed ring setting determined by L/D gnd = L/D req. By how much depends on what conditions look like on the way to goal, feedback from pilots in front of you, your gut, your horoscope, etc. It is also important to note that reassessing your final glide speed ring setting should not be done actively or you will end up flying reverse speed-to-fly (slowing down in sink). Remember, speed-to-fly assumes lift and sink will net zero, not that there will be no sink on your glide. Reassessing should be done after a significant period of excessive sink.

"Jonny,

you got to help us out here. The Rallye is just not happening online these days. Davis is light years behind the action on his float, Jamie's twitters are stuck with task1, her linked-to articles are from 2009. And the scoring sucks ass being like a day or two late - who by the way is in charge there? Girls, only girls now? - oh boy.

I didn't think I would ever have to say that, but you and some more top pilots on bloody FACEBOOK are the best source of information we can get hold on these days - this is really depressing.

I mean, how hard can it be in hitec-infested America to have some goalie send one bloody twitter text with the names of the pilots as they arrive in goal. It could be done in the ozzy outback with no problem.

We can't wait and rely on the freaking bloggers to tell the news, because they are seemingly all only concerned about selling us their personal up-and-down stories.

I wonder, is there one, just one person left with an intact journalistic attitude? One person, who can sum up the story of the day without mingling in his/her personal POV?

Gerrrrrrolf

Jeez, looking at the preliminary results, I would think that Gerolf would be happy that we've fallen down on the job and not met his high standards.

The results from task 3 will mix all this up.

Flying the Falcon is a humbling experience where there are great lessons to be learned. I just wish the classes were a bit longer. I started out in front about thirty second before the clock started and did find lift, but went over to even better lift that others found behind me. With a Falcon basically you just have to stay in the lift and forget about gliding to get any where.

So I don't get to report on how the race was run. I understand that after the turnpoint it was very difficult going into the wind. I wonder if Jonny is happy about that choice of a leg now.  Earlier we had the second leg going further to the north to Keystone airfield.

On Friday we launch at the Live Oak airfield and head north, cross wind.
