'Twas the Day Before Christmas

Fri, Dec 24 2021, 5:16:45 pm MST

When all through the Park

Bobby Bailey|Christmas|Cory Barnwell|Richard "Ric" Caylor

The hang glider pilots were ready, they pined for a lark
Their gliders were set up by the oak tree with care;
In hopes that the cummies soon would be there;

The pilots would soon be nestled all snug in their gear;
With beeps of their varios dancing in their ears;
And Jim in his plane, and Bobby in his too,
Were revving their engines as they normally do,

When out of the south the cu's came our way,
We looked into the sky and decided to play.
Away behind Bobby I flew like a flash,
I had to hold on tight, this flight cost some cash.

The sun on the field was heating below,
My vario sounded and I soon would let go.

With little Bobby so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment that I likely would stick.
More rapid than buzzards the birds did appear,
And I whistled, and shouted so that they could hear.

"Now, Mick!, now Scott, now Cory and Ric!
Right over me and going up quick!
To the top of the thermal! To the top of the lift!
Now glide away! Glide away! We have received such a gift!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with a hill side, lift up to the sky;
So up to the cloud base all of us flew
With hearts full of thanks and our warm clothing, too--

And then, in a twinkling I heard such a sound
As my vario hit 600+ fpm all around.
I straightened it out and ran for the edge,
Just getting outside a cumulus ledge.

I was dressed in four layers from my head to my pants,
I was hoping I hadn't accidentally picked up some ants;
Bundled all up in my hang glider sack,
I was warm as could be with my hang glider on back.

My eyes — how they twinkled! my dimples, how merry!
My cheeks were like roses, my nose like a cherry!
My droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the stubble on my chin was as white as the snow;

If I had a Russian mouth release, it would be tight in my teeth,
Or an Australian dual version that would be hooked down beneath;
But I had a broad smile and a little round belly
That didn't do much when I laughed, unlike a bowl full of jelly.

I was pushing and pulling, circling in the sky around,
And I laughed when I saw how far I was from the ground;
Banking up high and twisting my head
Soon I was a bit dizzy, but it was nothing to dread;

When I got to the top I went straight down the course,
And went for the turnpoint, life could have been worse,
And hearing the beeps tell me I was there,
And seeing that I had goal with a flare;

I pulled in hard to get up to speed,
And away I flew as the height above goal I did read.
But I was ready to exclaim as I dove out of sight -
"Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!"

Another challenging year

Christmas|Moyes Delta Gliders|Vicki Cain

Vicki sends:

As another year comes to a close, I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past. It has been another challenging year in these unprecedented times but also another year of learning, connection and continued support throughout the hang gliding community.

I am continually amazed and inspired by how we continue to support one another through all the difficulties of living in today’s world.

From all of us at Moyes, we wish you and your family an enjoyable and safe holiday season and we look forward to seeing you in 2022.

Santa X(C)mas Ornament - USHPA RRG donation incentive

Andrew Vanis|Christmas|Risk Retention Group|USHPA

Andrew Vanis writes:

http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Ornament-Hang-Gliding-Santa/dp/B00BRLYZ7U

Got about 30 of these Hang Gliding Santa’s that no longer seem to be available intending to do a fundraiser for our club the Sandia Soaring Association (SSA). No USHPA insurance - no SSA. Thus would like to send them to folks making a difference RIGHT NOW to the USHPA RRG fund.

Make your donation now and get your tax deduction for this year. If you've already donated and donate more now to qualify for any of these classes and dates, you will be included in this incentive. Just send both/all confirmations.

Send me your donation confirmations from donation made between 12/15/15 to 12/21/15 and I’ll send them out on Tuesday 12/22 so you should have them for Christmas.

These will be allocated in this order:

5 to $10,000 or more 10 to $1,000 to $10,000 5 to $500 - $1,000 Raffle off the remaining 10-ish plus those unused from sections above to all remaining donations $500+

Allocations are by earliest of date/time of contribution or email to me as long as it is in within the dates listed above.

If a class has more donors that ornaments, those donors will be included in the lower class. If a class has too few donors, the ornaments will be moved to the lower class. Whatever ornaments are not claimed by classes will be raffled off to everyone left who sent in a confirmation for a donation over $500.

Advance apologies to those already contributed since the objective of this is to generate additional contributions now. And, I’d like to think that if you are already that kind of person generous enough to contribute already an ornament trinket is not your motivator. Thank you for the donation you already made. And! Another option is to donate more to qualify for this.

So make those USHPA RRG donations today.

Forbes - it's raining »

BBC and the World report on rain in Forbes

BBC|Christmas|environment|news|podcast|weather

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8544716.stm

Since Christmas, parched areas of New South Wales, Australia's most populous state, have received their best rains in a decade, fuelling hopes the continent's worst drought in a century may finally be easing.

Near Forbes, a farming town 380km (240 miles) west of Sydney, vast tracts of desolate land have turned a splendid shade of green, while dry rivers and creeks have been revived.

"The impact of the rain has been fantastic. It has just really lifted the community and really lifted the environment," said Carissa Bywater, the general manager of the Forbes Shire council.

This oversees a town that has faced the dire prospect of running out of water, while the nearby Lachlan River almost stopped flowing.

The answer to today’s Geo Quiz today is Australia. Something’s happening in parts of the country that hasn’t happened for years. It’s RAINING. Correspondent Phil Mercer reports from the farming town of Forbes that locals hope the worst drought in memory may finally be breaking.

Merry Christmas. I guess having a paperback even when it costs $19.95 compared to the eBook at $7.95, is what pilots want. It wasn't even possible to put out such a book until very very recently (without a big commitment upfront). Now, it is out there and people are buying it.

The reviews from the eBook readers were very encouraging and supportive. I hope that all of you who read the paperback version, like the book also. To purchase it click the Cloudsuck ad.

Cloudsuck, the Life and Death Struggle for the Hang Gliding Word Recordis now available as a hard copy book. Just in time for Christmas. Make sure that that wuffo friend of yours understands the point of hang gliding.

Cloudsuck tells the story of the dramatic 10-year race to fly farther than anyone has ever gone in a hang glider. From the historic 1990 flight that first broke the 300-mile barrier, through ten years of adventure and challenge, this is a first-hand account of the driven individuals who struggled against each other and against nature to set the next hang gliding world distance record. We follow them from the northwest Colorado wilderness and across the rugged New Mexico desert to the plains of Australia and the Florida swamps.

We feel the thrill of racing against the worlds best, and the shock of loss in tragic accidents. Ultimately the trail leads to south Texas, where painstaking analysis of weather patterns finally pays off for a small group of pioneering pilots and the story begins again. Cloudsuck will appeal to anyone with a love of adventure, and everyone who has ever dreamed of flying.

The ebook version has been out for a little while now, and we've finally been able to get Cloudsuck printed. You can purchase it on-line at the URL above.

You can find the ebook at https://OzReport.com/cloudsuck.php. You can freely download a small portion of the book (Preface, TOC, first chapter) at https://OzReport.com/cloudsuck/cloudsucksmall.pdf. Right click this link then click Save As.

Christmas|cloud|Exxtacy|food|George Ferris|Kerry Lloyd|Malcolm Jones|Wallaby Ranch

Belinda and I are at Wallaby Ranch. We arrived here on Wednesday (January 20th). Three great days of flying before the rains today. Got a 73 miler past Silver Springs the second day I was here. Yesterday showed strong winds but weak lift under great looks, but not producing cloud streets. Carlos and I only went a bit over 23 miles.

Apparently flying has been great in Florida, at least since last October, except for a few weeks around Christmas (wouldn't you know it). George Ferris was getting long flights here on his Exxtacy, just before we got here.

The Ranch now has a chef, Jerome, and he is great. Cooks two to three meals a day, and frankly it is a 100% improvement on the Wallaby Ranch as a place to hang out, not that it wasn't already great. Anything to avoid going out for breakfast, and you get to meet and sit down with everyone here. Great food.

Lots of work taking place here, with many people providing the labor. This has been a big Brazilian contingent, and that has added to the atmosphere. Even Rhett's place looks improved. Kerry Lloyd has taken over the accounting, and Quicken Books has been set up to easily track the numerous services provided by the ranch personnel.

See more below for a few tidbits on our travels to Wallaby.

Saturday there was a special 5th birthday party at the Ranch for Malcolm Jones' daughter.

Lots of five year olds, farm animals, ponies, a huge pile of sand, Jerome, the chef and his crew all dressed up, the pole barn all decked out with paper cactuses, cowboy hats for all the kids along with scarfs.

Oh yes, and the tree house out of Dr. Suess through Malcolm. A southern father dotes on his daughter.
