Again another incremental (20 km) increase in the task length from the preceding day. 55 pilots in goal with Mario Alonzi last into goal at 5:47 over two hours later than Christian.. Pedro 6th, with pilots clumped together. Petr Polach was out in front but had to find some lift in the last cylinder to be able to make it in fourth ten minutes behind Christian.

The Spring Meeting - Friuli Venezia Giulia Trophy, at its 4th edition, is a FAI 2 competition (Hang Gliding class 1, class 5, Sport class) which takes place in a flight zone well known by European pilots. It is also part of the big flying area which have hosted the XXII Hang Gliding World Championship.

The flight area is mainly in the foothill but, depending on weather conditions, it is possible to fly also in the Alps and in the flatland. There are different takeoffs; two of them are in Slovenia and can be chosen in case of changeable weather.

The weather turns

competition|Friuli Venezia Giulia Trophy 2019|weather

https://airtribune.com/springmeeting-2019/blog__day_5

Pilots are already on takeoff. Weather seems perfect today, so we expect to go in the air early in the afternoon for a consistent task.

Because pilots weren't assigned Flymaster trackers through Airtribune, live tracking on Airtribune doesn't work for this competition. Follow the pilots on the Flymaster web site.

The task has started: https://lt.flymaster.net/bs.php?grp=2636

You can see the Replay from yesterday here: https://airtribune.com/play/4032/2d at the two times faster speed (compared to the Flymaster web site). The Airtribune replay uses the IGC files found here: https://airtribune.com/springmeeting-2019/results. The Airtribune Replay user interface is vastly superior to the Flymaster Playback user interface. It does have a problem with screen clutter on cell phones.

The weather was bad.

oliver gregory <olliettt1955@yahoo.com> writes:

It was a bad week for weather. I felt bad everyday as I gave the reports. It was tough to keep one’s chin up after several days of crummy weather. Mostly the strong SW winds shut us down. Everyone was patient and understanding. At least we had Jeremy’s great meals to enjoy every night. We got to do a lot of maintenance work on our equipment with advice from the experts. Glover had lots of jokes and humorous remarks to keep us laughing. This is called a positive reframe in psychiatry! Basically the weather set up in an unusual pattern that keep us shut down most of the week.

Day one was called due to winds, Day two was called due to winds and turbulence coming out of Dr. Dales airstrip. Day three was our only decent day. It was strong and SW again, but Terry Presley got approval for us to tow out of the Marion Co. Airport. It faces directly into the SW wind and is wide open compared to Dr. Dales little grass strip.

Marion Co. Airport is kinda like a mini Big Spring. We set up gliders behind the hanger in the wind shadow, then moved onto the grass near the taxi way where we towed. Joel Findley on the Lookout turbo Dragonfly tug and John Dunnum on the m squared tug had us in the air quickly. The day was still tough with a risk for over development. Several of us had reflights. The lift proved light and elusive. Our tug pilots were instructed to do whatever it took to help us stick. Anne-Odile is a C pilot on a single surface wing, but got an A+++ tow from our ace tugger Joel. She took full advantage of this and had a long flight.

Dustin Martin on his Litespeed won the day with the only goal flight. He said he got a little lucky with a thermal when he needed it. He made it to Henson’s pretty easily. Some people are good enough to make a little luck now and then. The rest of us were less lucky. The lift seemed to turn on and off quickly leaving one without many options for decent distances.

We had more strong SW and some rain!

The last day was lighter winds and weak lift. The hard core pilots who stuck with us were treated to a fun day at Dr. Dales airstrip with super tows and soft weak lift. Our tuggers were again instructed to do whatever it took to help us stick. A very short task was called due to the marginal lift predicted for the day. At least we got to fly. Three guys made goal. John Haywood first, Steve Jones second, and Terry Presley third to goal. Everyone got to tow out and leave the home field for a cross country flight. It was a pretty day. Everyone had smiles that evening even though the flights were all pretty short. At least Keith Smith had his longest flight ever!

We had a great meal and lots of prizes and gifts for all the pilots at the awards dinner. A fun band called “Uncle Lightnin” played for us. HERE’S THE IMPORTANT PART! We raised $1502 for the Bo fund! The Tree Toppers and Team Challenge members would like to challenge all the other hang gliding clubs to match out efforts. Bo’s in a bind now and needs all our love and support.

Raven Sky Sports <brad@hanggliding.com> writes:

Raven Sky Sports became the first dedicated aerotow flight park in the U.S. when we took delivery of our first Dragonfly tow plane in early August, 1992. Then, on August 15, 1992, the first flight at our aerotow park was made, when Anne Bates (tug pilot) towed Brad Kushner (hang glider pilot) to 2,000 feet AGL.

Mike Lane took the second tow on that first day. Brad Kushner (instructor) flew our first training tandems on aerotow three days later. We've operated continuously ever since, 7 days a week, March 1st thru December 1st every year.

Raven Sky Sports, Inc. celebrated its 10-year anniversary over three months ago. Our club newsletter has been called The Raven Report since late 1992 (The Raven Report transitioned from being a paper newsletter to an e-newsletter around 1996).

The Dragonfly Tow Plane that Raven began operating in 1992 is still flying at Raven, with its original Rotax 582 engine. We've also acquired three more Rotax 912-s equipped Dragonfly’s which do most of the towing these days. Even before Raven Sky Sports acquired our first Dragonfly, four other production-model Dragonfly’s were built in the first batch and delivered to their owners in March 1992.

One went to Lookout Mountain Flight Park, which can claim the title of “First Mountain Flight Park to Add Aerotowing.” The other three in the first batch went to Sequatchie Valley Soaring (Cliff Whitney and Rick Jacob's school and shop at Henson's Gap; they went out of business around 1997); Dick Cheney (UP, then Blue Sky, then Altair, they sold their Dragonfly to Raven in 1996); and Ron Smith, a private owner in central Illinois who lost his life in a payout-winch accident around 1993).

Raven took the first Dragonfly fresh out of the second batch (of six), and had it up and flying a week later. Raven Sky Sports is dedicated to producing safe, thoroughly-trained pilots. We provide training hill sessions for footlaunch & landing practice to complement the curriculum of training which is done tandem on aerotow. All of our students are well-prepared to pass their USHGA written exams prior to soloing.

Every spring, Betty Pfeiffer (of High Energy Sports) comes to Wisconsin to do a super Safety & Parachute Clinic for 75-100 members of the local hang gliding community. Currently, we're building a new 360° training hill at our airport, alongside our brand new 3,000 foot runway.

Ours is a first-rate training program (we've never been accused of giving away unearned ratings). Our relationship with our competitor aerotow park in the area (Hangglide Chicago) is a healthy, mutually-supportive one, (which I wish was a more common thing); and we at Raven are proud to hold claim to being the Oldest, and the First, Dedicated Aerotow Park in the U.S. www.hanggliding.com.
