Cu-nimbs
Did anyone care?

PG

I've had it confirmed that there was a paraglider pilot who got sucked up into a cu-nimb apparently the day after Ewa got high to over 7000 meters.  Apparently he didn't learn from what happened the day before.

The flying season begins in Florida

Davis Straub|donations|Quest Air

You'll find our reports on the recent flying in Florida in the Oz Report and on the Oz Report forum.

Gathering the news requires dedication.  I can't take an evening off.  Every night after flying or working I'm here at the computer gathering stories, writing stories, doing research.  I like it but it is a job.

You can send $20 or more for a yearly subscription/donation.  To pay for your subscription with your credit card or PayPal account:

If you’d rather just send a check for $20 (US Dollars, only please) or more, please feel free to do so.  The mail gets forwarded to me wherever I’m at.

Payable to:

These are our supporters (if you are not on the list and have donated to the Oz Report, email me and I'll make sure that you are recognized): https://OzReport.com/supporters.php.  Some of you who I've missed in the past did write to me and made sure I knew just how important the Oz Report was to them.  If I've missed you, please do tell me.

HOLC
The OLC file upload and uploading from SeeYou don't work

On-Line Contest|record

http://www3.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/para/

Just to make sure that they did work, since I've been using Direct Claim (see previous article), I tried out uploading an OLC file created by SeeYou.  It was incompatible with the HOLC.  Thankfully the HOLC now gives you a way to delete your IGC file and your entry and start again.  This is a new feature that we never had over the years and not this year until the last few weeks.  Big improvement.  You can also edit some aspects of your entry (although, of course, not the IGC file).

Since the OLC file upload didn't work I didn't try the upload directly from SeeYou to the HOLC because basically it sends up the same information, which I already knew was incompatible with the HOLC way of doing things.  I say stick with Claim, Direct Claim, upload your IGC file and then fill in the required additional information.

Once you've got your flight(s) uploaded, you can check them out and compare them with those flown by other pilots.  You can't get to your flights directly, and the only way I know how to get there, is to click Scoring in the menu, and then your glider/contest type (like Hang Glider (FAI-1). Scroll down the list of pilots until you get to your name (hope that you are doing well so that you don't have to scroll that far) and then click on your name to see a list of your flight.

You'll now see a list of your flights (if you've claimed a few), with the latest on top of the list.  Click the "i" on the right hand end of the record for the flight that you wish to see in more detail.  If you wish to edit the flight information, click "Edit Flight" in the upper right hand corner.

Others can view the details of your flight, download your IGC file, view your flight in Google Earth, but not edit your flight.

Unlike in the past there are no national contests within the HOLC.  You won't find a way to create your own local contest.  You also won't see any summaries or statistics about your flights.

Tomorrow we'll look at Leonardo, the second longest running on-line contest.

Light winds, cu's, what more do you want?

After taking my daily twenty three mile bike ride it was time for a flight.  Ten or more pilots were here with the same idea, just waiting for the cu's to bunch up a bit in the light (3 to 5 mph) east, northeast wind.  One pilot had been floating around for an hour, when I took off first to lead the second round.

Jim Rooney took me east and toward the cu's. The climb was slow and I was watching things carefully.  As Jim approached the clouds he began to rise a little.  It was clear that there was lift ahead so I pulled the pin at 1,400' AGL and went off in search of lift on my own.  I could just feel that the lift was there and sure enough it was.  I found a good one and climbed out to 5,100' AGL.

As I climbed out I watched the other pilots get towed up, fly around and land.  Almost all of them never got over 2,500' and landed soon after they launched.  We had planned on a 50 km triangle to the north, but it was obvious that wasn't going to happen, so I took another swing at my default 25 km FAI triangle.

I got a good start at 4,400' and headed toward clouds on the course line to the southeast to almost the Green Swamp.  I found good lift and headed for a dark cloud just before the turnpoint at Bay Lake (a church). The cloud was dying so I kept going far into the Green Swamp where there were lots more clouds.

I climb out with sailplanes including a couple of Marsky wings to 6,500' under the plentiful cu's over the Swamp and head toward Mascot the next turnpoint.  Unfortunately the cloud ahead doesn't work so I cut short the run and head back to Quest where all the would be pilots are hanging out under the oak tree wondering what the story was with the lack of lift.  I say, I didn't see them get towed to the west, like I did.

Those pilots stuck on the ground today, did much better yesterday, with John Simon flying 92 miles in a Moyes LiteSport and Paul and Lauren Tjaden deciding to land after 65 miles as Lauren was cold at 7,000'. See: http://ozreport.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6863
