Pedro 6th, with pilots clumped together. Petr Polach was out in front but had to find some lift in the last cylinder to be able to make it in fourth ten minutes behind Christian.

Day 7

Forbes Flatlands 2022|Vicki Cain|XC

Vicki writes:

Today was a mammoth effort for everyone involved with some pilots flying for over 30 hours in the last 7 days.

Unfortunately today Steve Docherty managed to meet up with the resident angry eagle and took some battle scars in flight.

Craig Taylor writes:

Day 7 saw us flying our 7th consecutive task with light winds and blue skies. A closed quadrilateral course back to BMIA of 137km in the shape of a Rogallo wing was thought up by the clearly getting rather bored task committee.

Strong climbs to 10,000 feet were promised, however it quickly became clear straight off the rope that the oppressive inversion would instead make the day a slow and tedious one. With the field packed together like sardines under a 4000ft ceiling, and the flock jostling for position, the first start gate came and went with no takers, with the field moving off somewhat lethargically on the second at 2:30pm.

Trent charged out ahead and found the climbs for much of the first leg, with the inversion slowly lifting to 5000ft.

After rounding Ktwo the first TP, Scott managed to find a boomer to 7 grand, quickly joined by the lead gaggle, whilst the rest continued to struggle under the inversion for much of leg 2. Those patient enough to hang in the 100-ups and doddle along course were finally and rather suddenly rewarded at the second turn with clouds, and the promised strong climbs to 10 grand. Jonny picked a 9-up and skied out, with Attila, Blenkie, Jonas and myself making up the lead gaggle.

Finally we could pull in the bar, and the race was on! That feeling however was quickly dispensed as the third leg took us straight across a big blue hole and we were back to crappy lift and long, toe pointing glides. Attila, knowing that he’s got the trophy already all but bagged, became a passenger and let the rest of us do the hard work. Scott rejoined, and together we made a low save 12 kms out from the final turn point, providing the gaggle with some much needed beeps.

It was getting late however, and this would be one of our last climbs, topping out at a truly inadequate 4000ft. It was becoming apparent that reaching goal was becoming out of reach. We struggled on, turning in pretty much anything that wasn’t sinking, and gained a few more kilometers.

I snagged a little bubble just big enough for one, and managed to top out at 5 grand 6 kms from the final turn. Then the glide to the deck was on, landing well after 7pm for a long day in the saddle. Attila won the day 10km short, me second, followed by Jonas, Blinkie, Scott, Jonny, Noma, and several others closely behind. It was a long hard day indeed.

Day 6 updated

Forbes Flatlands 2022|Jonas Lobitz|triangle|XC

Jonas writes:

The Forecast

Today’s forecast was similar to yesterday with 20-30km/h winds from the south west, 6-700fpm climbs up to 9000ft with scattered CU’s and patchy lift in some areas. However, there wasn’t the approaching trough line from the west that we had to navigate yesterday.

The Task

The task committee called a 192km dogleg task to Gilgandra, to the North East of Forbes with a 20km turn point radius at Trangie to keep the field away from the Naromine and Dubbo airspace.

The Race

Launch at Bill Moyes International opened at 1PM. The lift was blue and patchy in the start gate and the thermal cores were moving around a lot. Essentially the entire field took the first start at 2PM just as clouds were starting to develop down the course line.

Jonny Durand led the pack for the majority of the first leg, Trent Brown, Scott Barrett, Jonas Lobitz were closely on his heels. The CU’s were lining up well on the way to the first turn point with tight and punchy cores up to 7-800fpm topping out over 8000ft as we sped down the course line with the strong tail wind.

However, the clouds became more sparse about 30kms from the first turn point, we hit the blue and things slowed down with pilots having to stop in 3-400fpm climbs. Most of the field including Attila Bertok, Trent Brown, Scott Barrett, Craig Taylor, Steve Dogherty, Jonas Lobitz amongst others converged just after the first turnpoint in the blue before climbing out under a developing cloud about 50kms from goal.

From this position we were confident we’d make goal needing perhaps only one last climb before going out on final. Trent Brown led the charge from cloud base as we dove out over the forest towards Gilgandra. There was a large patch of overdevelopment and a Cu Nim building to our east, making its way towards course line.

Our glide numbers started falling as the overdevelopment encroached. The lift significantly weakened, and the wind switched round to the east, so the pilots now had a solid cross wind to battle. Attila Bertok took a slightly different line further to the west and managed to avoid the worst of the sink crossing the finish line in first place while the rest of the field struggled low in weak 50-100fpm lift in the strong cross wind.

Jonas Lobitz was a little higher and hit a light climb 8kms out from goal which was just enough to make it into the 2km goal cylinder. The rest of the pilots landed several kms short.

Day 6

Forbes Flatlands 2022|triangle|Vicki Cain|XC

Vicki writes:

Today has been the hottest day of the competition so far and the conditions in the paddock were temperatures exceed 40°C.

With the increase in temperatures we had no clouds for today's task, a dogleg heading north to Trangie with a goal at Gilgandra for a total distance just over 200km!

With many pilots landing out today they're all late returning home so no wrap up today! Maybe one in the morning.

It looks like Attila and Jonas were the only 2 to make goal today after a whole gaggle landed within 5/10km of goal as the slower conditions and SE wind drifted them off course line. Attila will extend his lead but the mid field battle is hotting up.

Notable mention to Scotty Ireland for making goal in the sports class, unfortunately the two eagles that tried to help him along the way left quite their mark on his glider.

Day 4

Forbes Flatlands 2022|Vicki Cain

Vicki writes:

We are officially into the new year and we start things off with amazing conditions and a primo Forbes triangle task!

Today's task starts at BMIA with a 5km exit cylinder, 1stturnpoint sends the competitors south west for 54km to "Caraga" with a 3km entry cylinder, next up is a 61km leg heading east to brush past the northern end of the Coninbla national park with another 3km entry radii, the final leg is an into wind push back to BMIA for another 50km.

With back to back 1000 point scores Attila takes another decisive win on his Moyes Litespeed RX5pro, second was Jonnie Durrand followed closely By Scott Barrett.

Attila's round up of the day:

"After a slow start unable to catch the forming gaggle in the start cylinder I was forced to take the start in a sub optimal position some 5-600m lower than the rest."

"Leaving the start we had very good clouds and it was very easy making it to the first turnpoint at Caraga, linking clouds and flying fast, after the poor start I started to feel better about the task, heading to the second turnpoint I had great clouds again for about ¾ of the 2ndleg, until I reached the turnpoint I was flying alone, unaware of where my competitors were."

"Leaving the first turnpoint I manage to get a visual on some other pilots coming up from low, at this point I realized I had at least a 6km lead and at least a full climb ahead, a nice place to be."

"Reaching the second turnpoint I was having to fight cloud suck, another good feeling! The clouds had started to disappear and by the time I had taken the turnpoint it was blue all the way home."

"There were some slight caps in the inversion layer and the big climbs left some small wisps to navigate the way home, on the last leg I was a little slower than the previous 100km and actually flew back down course line to take my final climb, I left at around 8-1 as the climbs were good and plentiful, it was seemingly a perfect final glide until a monster 1000ftpm climb threw me into orbit and ruined my goal line arrival style points!"

"Never the less a beautiful day in Forbes and another perfect score."

Day 5, what's with the zeros?

Forbes Flatlands 2022|triangle|Vicki Cain|XC

Vicki writes:

It's groundhog day! Today was a tough one!

The forecast had a few possibilities of rain with some fairly solid lines of showers predicted, this left the task committee a pretty hard job! They smashed it and got a perfect task between two lines of showers

Today we start once again at BMIA and head NNE to our first turnpoint at "Alec" a small town on the A39 highway running reciprocal to the Goobang national park, with a radii of 1km. Once tagging this turn point some 50km away from Forbes it's time to run north following the range for just over 100km before arriving at goal with a radii of 2.5km at the town of Trangie (turnpoint "Trang").

Our amazing ground crew got everyone off the deck within 30 minutes today with no one needing a reflight! Great work in temperatures exceeding 37°C.

Jonny Durand gives us today's wrap up!

"Conditions were a little tricky around launch and 10 minutes before the start nearly everyone was together and all did our own thing with no one ending up with the perfect start."

"First leg was good if you stayed high I managed to pull away from most pilots after hitting some strong climbs. Once rounding Alectown we faced a 101kms cross tailwind leg to Trangie, the sky blued up on course line and I was forced to go more upwind, The lift became broken and I was never able to reach cloudbase again."

"Attila had a similar story to me whilst the day winner Trent claimed to have a good run getting 700fpm climbs and even a 1000fpm climb on the second leg. Both of them flew over me and Trent will beat Attila by a couple of minutes with me 10 minutes behind Attila."

"Around 8 pilots in goal with Scott landing out. It was not the day to be low and trying to push and catch up."

While Attila extends his lead the leader board takes a change for 2ndand 3rdplaces with pretty much all spots up for grabs!

Vicki writes:

We are well underway for the Forbes Flatlands 2022 and for the last task of the year!

Task 3 sees a Triangle task starting off from BMIA we had a classic looking Forbes day, Cu's forming from the early AM, slight breeze and beautiful temperatures!

The first leg of the task heads the competitors NNW to "Billa" a 400m radius turnpoint 74km away, arriving at the most northern point it's time to hang a U-turn and head 35km SW for "Skulls" another 400m radii before heading east and into the slight head wind arriving at the goal "Bogan"

Guy hubbard reports the conditions today to be quite technical and punishing when low but great clouds and approximately 15/20% cloud cover, cloud base topping out around mid day of 8500ft!

Attila turns on the heat flying his Litespeed RX5Pro taking today's win by over 20 minutes followed by Scott Barrett and Jonny Durrand rounding out the podium for the day!

Day 2

Forbes Flatlands 2022|Vicki Cain

Vicki writes:

Today is task 2 and with the cobwebs blown away we set a slightly more challenging 145km crosswind task to Tallim (Tallimba town) with a first turnpoint to the west at "ootha".

Winds in the paddock were a fairly consistent 10/15kmh E - ESE with Cu's showing a promising looking sky ahead.

Soon enough all competitors were in the air and seeing cloud base of around 7000ft (2100m) making the first turnpoint in good time with a reasonable tailwind, the task became more challenging as the pilots had to turn 90° heading SSW, on the plus side increasing Cu's to show the way but having to glide east of course line so as not to drift away from the optimised course line when thermalling.

We have a large radius around goal (17km) because we are not sure how the local area has been affected by the local floods, this give competitors better options for landing fields but makes final glide a little trickier!

Scott Barrett takes the win on day 2 followed by Trent Brown around 5 minutes behind and Attila Bertok in 3rd place.

Scott Barrett, Craig Taylor
Our day winner Scott Barrett and Craig Taylor in goal!

Don't know if Jonny is flying a Gecko or not. Looks like he caught up to three other pilots after taking a clock fifteen minutes later. Steve Blenkinsop is back flying after injuries from his bicycle incident. Missing goal by 80 meters must have been a let down for Jason.

Sport Class flew a shorter version of the open task but pilots didn't make it back to Dalby. Interesting to see a U2 in the lead over the Geckos.

Harrison Rountree in the lead so far

Corryong Cup 2021|Moyes Litespeed RX|Rohan Holtkamp|Rohan Taylor|Steve Blenkinsop

How can Corryong go on with the interstate travel under restrictions?

Harrison writes:

Most pilots come from Victoria. South Australian SA pilots can still enter Victoria. Queensland pilots can travel through New South Wales into Victoria.

Forbes was cancelled as most of Sydney was restricted in movement, including the organisers and Victoria and South Australia were enforcing mandatory isolation on returning if you visited New SOuth Wales (Forbes, for example). It pretty much meant that only rural New South Wales pilots and Queensland pilots could participate (without the organizers, of course).

The results are here: http://xc.highcloud.net/comp_overall.html?comPk=305. All future Australian competitions will be scored using airscore.

Hit by a truck while riding his bike

Steve Blenkinsop

I rode with Steve from Mt. Beauty to Fall Creek, Angler's Rest, Omeo,  around  to Dinner Plane and back to Bright, Australia. Also a bit in South Australia. I'm so sorry to hear that he was hurt and is in the hospital, head injuries, six cracked ribs, fracture of the lumbar spin, moving arms and legs, he recognizes his family.

Wow, I bet the Spanish pilots aren't real happy about this. It's their Nationals:

42º Nacional Ala Delta Zujar Jabalcon

And it's all in Spanish, which would be a bit of a handicap for Australian pilots.

In little early and a long ways away for the Australian Team to practice for the Worlds (which begin July 13th). I guess they are serious.

I see that our friend, Konstantin Lukyanov, violated airspace and got a 100% penalty. Many others got warnings, including Rory and Rohan, but not Steve.

Andrey Solomykin again won the day and all days and was the overall winner in Sport Class.

Evgeniya Laritskaya writes:

Dalby Big Air, day 6. Groundhog Day, as our task committee called it. Sport class had the same task as their previous one - 51 kilometer to Brigalow, almost perfectly in line with the wind. Open class flew the same direction as before but much further - 217 kilometers this time.

The weather was truly fantastic - just look at the photo of the clouds from my retrieve drive. The cloudbase was around 2100 meters MSL and the clouds were easily reachable. The wind was pushing pilots pretty strong (~25 km/h) along the course, but it didn’t affect their take off safety. Thermals were 2-3 m/s on average, but I heard reports of 5-6 m/s even.

Looks like the sport class pilots undercalled their task: many of them had already made goal by 1 pm! They could have flown a much longer task! But at least there were so many happy faces at goal!

Andrey and Hugh (first and second place in the current sport class scoring) were mostly flying together. Their results are very close again, but Andrey managed to be one minute faster. Peter Garrone was first at the goal field and earned the most leading points, but was three minutes slower than Hugh! Four more kingposted guys made goal and Richard Hughes landed in the adjacent field and ended up one kilometer short.

Eleven open class pilots made this long task, and Guy Hubbard was only 180 meters short! Matthew Barlow won the task (for the second time at this comp. Look at their speeds, by the way: nearly 60 km/h. I could see on their Spot trackers page that they were flying really fast today. It was hard to keep up down on the road.

Vicki Cain <<Vicki>> writes:

Keeping the dream alive... Hang gliding competitions in Australia have always had the reputation of the being more than herculean, Forbes Flatlands 2019 held true to that reputation.

This year we were able to set 6 tasks from 8, one of which was stopped because of a storm on course. The 5 completed tasks totalled 853.4 km averaging over 170 km per task! We had lots of pilots in goal most days.

With super consistent flying Jonny Durand took the competition win, his 8th Forbes Flatlands win! Attila Bertok in 2nd and Olav Opsanger in 3rd.

L–R back: Petr Benes, Rohan Taylor, Filippo Oppici, Steve Blenkinsop, Ollie Chitty, Guy Hubbard, Josh Woods; L-R front: Attila Bertok, Jonny Durand, Olav Opsanger

Our Emma Martin Memorial award went to Yadi Wu from China. Yadi came to the Sport Class competition with only 5 hours airtime and no cross country experience. On her first flight she managed 35 kms and on her 2nd 61 kms!

We had 8 contestants in Sport Class this year with 2 new pilots to Forbes from Indonesia. Bin Duan from China took the win with local pilot Alisdair Bramwell-Davis only 2 points behind, in 2nd place and Peter Garrone another local pilot in 3rd.

Huge congratulations to all the winners!

Thank you to our major sponsors, Forbes Council, NSWHGPGA and Moyes Delta Gliders and of course Bill and Molly Moyes, you’d have to say our Patrons of the Forbes Flatlands Competition.

To all our crew, I can’t thank you enough. Everyone goes above and beyond, travelling from afar to come to Forbes and to get all the pilots in the air as quickly and as safely as possible. And having as much fun as we can! The camaraderie is amazing!

Thank you to all the pilots coming from all over the world and all over Australia. We hope you had the time of your lives!

Petr Polách writes:

Task 2, no goal for me. If you pick up all bad luck around, at least do it in one day.

Rory Duncan's VG broke, on the ground, just when the first pilot towed up! So with a great teamwork, with Jonny, Ollie, me and Tyler we helped to repair it. Amazing, it was like a pit stop in formula 1.

After my tow I bombed out, missed cycle and had to refly.

The shadow that came by that time let me down and desperate for thermals, while pilots few km in front had strong climbs, and 9000 ft.

I did my best to race the sun in very narrow, hard to find thermals and landed after all just 15km short to goal.

Day 7 - After overnight storms day 7 was cancelled due to marginally strong wind. After flying every day prior, a decision was made to err on the side of caution and leave it for a big finale tomorrow. Weather looks pumping for an epic finish tomorrow! So come check it out.

At this stage tomorrow looks like a Beechmont start so get yourself up to the Flying Bean Cafe to see the pilots launch! Or in the evening come for a drink at the Canungra Hotel to see who the winners are.

2018 Dalby Big Air

They fix the scoring system

Attila Bertok|Dalby Big Air 2018|Jon "Jonny" Durand jnr|Nick Purcell|Quest Air|Rohan Taylor|Steve Blenkinsop

Apparently they caught the scoring error from the first day and got rid of the goal arrival position points. So just distance and time used for scoring on this first day. They also used elapsed time instead of a bunch of start gates. I've not seen that before, but have proposed it for our first day of the 2018 Quest Air Nationals. I'll have to ask Jonny Durand exactly why they don't go with the default scoring system on the first day of their competitions.

An unusual variation on GAP 2016

Øyvind Ellefsen|Dalby Big Air 2018|Facebook|Moyes Litespeed RX|Rohan Taylor|Steve Blenkinsop|Trent Brown|video

Start when you want as there is no start clock, therefore your elapsed time. No leading point, but arrival position points. I've never seen those two used separately. Trent, who starts after everyone who scored in the top ten, gets to use over 50 pilots as thermal markers along a 140 km course. Those pilots in the lead don't get any compensation for providing Trent with this service except goal arrival position points, a mere pittance.

Looks like there was a good breeze and strong conditions with 26 pilots in goal.

Oliver Chitty «Oliver Chitty» writes:

The Forbes Flatlands competition which started on the 29th of January and lasted through to the 5th of December made it the first big comp of the year. Having hosted the world championships in 2013 it made its mark in the hang gliding scene as one of the best venues with the most consistent flying conditions to be found during this time. It attracted pilots from all around the world.

This year saw a gathering of pilots for a few practice competition days as the forecasted good weather put on a good show, notably Alexandra “Sasha” Serebrennikova managed to set new women’s declared and open distance female triangle world records during the practice days. She took off from Forbes, flew southwest to West Wyalong, then east to Grenfell before pushing back north west to Forbes to complete her task landing at 7pm. Congratulations Sasha. She commented, “And to think this is only the practice task at Forbes.”

This year the competition head quarters was run at the rugby club in the center of town where all the pilots meet for a 10 am task briefing. It was likely to be hot in excess of 35° Celsius so keeping pilots out of the sun was a priority. The pilots are told the task, start time and any other details they needed for the day. It's usually about two hours before the first launch window opens at 12:30 so it’s nice and relaxed as it only takes about 10 minutes to get to the takeoff field formally known as the Bill Moyes International Airfield.

Day one canned

Day one in any competition is always quite tense. The famous saying rings through everyone’s minds “you can’t win a competition on the first day but you sure as well can lose it.” The task set for day one is a 155km task to the SSE. There is a lot of overcast today and a strong breeze. There are some cumulus forming under the high cloud but a band of rain possibly pushing in from the west. With much discussion between the safety committee and task committee the launch window is pushed back from 12:30 till 2:30 to give the strong winds time to die down. As 2:30 arrives nearly half the field is in the air and climbing well, but maybe too well as a large area of rain starts to descend on course line. The safety committee decide to cancel the day on grounds of safety. The Laminate gliders we fly in competitions really don’t handle well in the rain but everyone makes it down safe back in the start cylinder.

Day two Task 1

The weather for day two looks far more promising, still quite strong winds out of the WSW, but no over development and a 9000' cloud base. With day one out of the way it’s a little more relaxed before take off in the tow field. Our task today takes us north to Trangie, just to the west of Dubbo for 142.8km optimized race to goal with a later start again to let some of yesterday's bad weather clear the area. A challenging cross wind for the first part of the flight which should back later on to a more predominant tail wind. All of the competitors get up and off and there is plenty of room in the 10km start radius. A large proportion of pilots take the first start at 15:00, but quite quickly people are taking different routes on course line. Some pilots take a more direct route keep just left of course line enough to battle the wind, while others push much harder into the cross wind to make the latter parts of the flight easier. First into goal is Atilla Bertok followed closely by Ollie Chitty from the first clock after taking the more direct route and not straying far from course line. It's 10 minutes before the next competitors arrive, Guy Hubbard and a chasing pack of 2nd starters (15:15) with Josh Woods, Steve Blenkinsop and Niki Longshore. Niki also took a decisive day win over the other females in the competition being the only one in goal.

Day 3 Task 2

A switch in the wind brings us a steady northerly flow. This means we will be seeing predominantly blue conditions early on and only 10knts of wind from the north in the boundary layer. With this forecast we have a 185.7km race to goal via 2 turn points finishing at Bookham north west of Canberra. It's noticeably slower in the start cylinder today and climbs are only getting to 7000ft. The first start clock comes around but only a few pilots at the top of the gaggle take the plunge, everyone else seems to be on the same consensus that a later start gate would prove more efficient if the conditions get better. It's only a short time (15 minutes) before the second start is activated. After the second start window opens everyone starts hunting down the lonely few gliders who took the first start. With two large radius turn points along the way there is quite a split of pilots along the course line. Josh Woods takes the day win closely followed by Jonny Durand and Atilla Bertok all taking the 2nd start.

Day 4 Task 3

The ever-reliable southwest wind returns for day 4 task 3 and a 195.2km task to Gulgong airstrip is set. In this wind direction we get a cooler air mass and even better flying conditions. There are talks of getting to over 10,000' today so we are reminded at pilot briefing about the effects and dangers of hypoxia.

Straight off the tow it was obvious today was much stronger than the previous day. Already by 12:30 we were getting close to 10,000' with climbs well in excess of 1000fpm. Almost everyone took the first start today and a good strong gaggle made the first 50km look easy. Niki Longshore was once again one of the top pilots pushing the gaggle and was on glide heading for climbing gliders ahead when she was hit by a incredibly strong patch of rough air sending her glider pointing straight up to the sky with no airspeed left to recover. She very quickly pulled her parachute and was on a descent through a gaggle of gliders from 8000'.

Niki did an incredible job to stop the rotation before landing quite perfectly in a paddock with road access and under the shade of trees. Jonny Durand was first on scene after seeing Niki pull her chute. He descended with her side by side and landed in the field within seconds of her arrival. Many pilots stayed in the area to make sure things were okay before heading back on course. Unfortunately, Niki’s competition would be over after such a strong and dominating start and Jonny would receive his score made from an average of his future total.

First into the Gulgong goal would once again be Atilla Bertok, closely followed by Tyler Borradaile and Josh Woods.

Day 5 Task 4

Waking up on the morning of the 2nd of January we are greeted by our competition Whattsapp group with a message of “Briefing 10am, be here ready to fly.”

There had been talks of going big today, the south wind was still blowing but slightly stronger today and even higher bases than yesterday so it looks like the task committee was planning a big one. In 2014 the distance to goal record in a competition task was set at 368km flying from Forbes to Wallygett. Today we have a slight west component to the wind and will be flying 389km to another flying site, Manila.

To make this new record task pilots had to be taking off much earlier than previous days so the first start was 12:00 just 1:30 hours after briefing in town. For many pilots this would be a personal best flight and nearly everyone took the 1st start getting on their way as soon as possible. Even at mid day there were good cumulus clouds and pilots reporting climbs to over 11,000'. A lot of pilots had Niki’s accident on their minds for a while. Glides were noticeably slower for the first portion of the course.

There seemed to be two main routes taken. A few pilots took the direct course line route when other pilots headed further west of course line and followed a line of mountains hoping to use them as triggers. 5 hours later the first pilot called on final glide. Ollie Chitty from Great Britain was first in goal with a time of 05:18:23 just ahead of Jonny Durand with a time of 05:19:27. Tyler Borradaile took 3rd place just a few seconds later. Eventually we would see 16 pilots make the record task with many personal bests broken and smiles all round, except for the retrieve drives who had over a 1000km total journey, the real hero’s of the day.

Sasha took an early bird launch and quickly flew 10km south into the head wind to a declared starting point for her an attempt at breaking the distance to goal woman’s world record, extending her flight to over 407km.

Day 6 task 5

With many pilots not returning back until the early hours of the morning the next task briefing was delayed by a few hours giving people time to rest and recuperate before flying again. A shorter dogleg task via one turn point of 155km was called landing at Wellington airstrip with a start time of 15:00. Today was the polar opposite of the previous day with no clouds and slow climbs. Many pilots were dropped in the first hour struggling to find climbs. Once at the turn point the conditions seemed to get better, but it was a strong crosswind for the final leg. Some people landed short after drifting too far down wind giving a hard final glide. Ollie Chitty took a 2nd consecutive day win once again followed closely by Jonny Durand and Guy Hubbard. Only 9 pilots made the task.

Day 7 Task 6

Finally a day with less wind. Task 6 was called a rest day for the retrieve drivers so we would be flying a closed triangle of 166km. Pilots were starting to look noticeably fatigued after 5 back to back long tasks (and a record task). The towing was slow to get going. Fortunately there were good clouds in the start cylinder and everyone had plenty of room to pick their start. Almost everyone took the first start again at 13:50 with only a few pilots choosing to take the gamble on a later start at 14:10.

The shorter first leg of the triangle with a slight chasing tail wind went quickly but some pilots got low and had to take slow climbs from the foothills at the turn point. Heading northeast into the 2nd turn point the day started to blue out and become a little more tricky. It was here that the fast first starters had a slight time advantage over the stragglers and didn’t waste much time. The wind had picked up slightly and made the final leg of the triangle more difficult as pilots headed over high ground and minimal landing areas. Once they got out onto the flats it was back to good climbs and long final glides of over 30km. Jonny Durand took the day win with a time of 03:33:59 closely followed by a consistently well scoring Rory Duncan, Jason Kath took out 3rd place for the day just 30 seconds behind Rory.

Good music and many goal margaritas were handed out in goal as pilots and retrieve drivers celebrated at last a task with no 5-hour drive home.

Day 8 Task 7

The final task. 7 straight competition days has the field of competitors looking and sounding very tired. We have a weather system passing through the area today and the wind direction could be anything later in the day. We have a task that headed north east to a large 40km radius before turning west into a 50km radius and returning south down to goal at the Peak Hill air strip. Depending on the weather this could be a final 15km strong head wind stint. There was discussion at the pilot briefing if this was safe as we would be crossing over a firing range, but it was eventually agreed that this was the best bet for the conditions forecasted in the local area.

After launch many pilots commented how rough the air was in the 5km start cylinder, some managing better than others to get up, but everyone at least managed to get away for the start. The task saw a fair tail wind for the first 50km on course line before dropping to almost nothing before the first turn point. The faster pilots of the day made a better run after the first turn point and made short work of the 2nd leg. With two very large radiuses there can be quite a few different routes depending on where you intercept the optimum point of turn point. This stretched the field out into many small gaggles. Atilla Bertok took another day win closely followed again by Tyler Borradaile and Rory Duncan seconds later.

The scores for the top three pilots were incredibly close. No one would know the final scores until the prize giving that evening, so at goal it was a quick pack up and off to get home and ready for the presentation

The only pilot to make goal everyday of the competition was Rory Duncan and rightfully so he took the overall win and became national champion by 1 single point from a total of 5880 beating 7-time champion Jonny Durand on 5879. Josh woods took a strong third place after another consistent competition. Alexandra Serebrenikova (Sasha) took 1st place in the woman’s task just ahead of Yoko Sano from Japan.

2018 Quest Air Nationals Series

Mon, Nov 27 2017, 7:14:35 am PST

The meet is over-subscribed

The meet filled up in three days. We have 82 pilots registered. We are currently looking at expanding the number of pilots who can attend. Frankly we had no idea that this would happen so quickly. We have to follow the following USHPA rule:

All competitors should be registered on a first-come, first-served basis except during the first 30 days of registration, where 30% of the available places may be held for the top 20 NTSS and top 30 WPRS ranked pilots.

We'll use NTSS and WPRS rankings as of November 1st, 2017.

To secure a higher place in the order that pilots are chosen to participate in the competition, we need pilots to be confirmed. To be confirmed you need to register, fill out on-line and send in your correct waivers and medical form (use Adobe Acrobat DC - the free version, https://helpx.adobe.com/reader/faq.html), and pay the entry fee. See:

https://airtribune.com/2018-quest-air-national-series/info/details__info

https://OzReport.com/waivers.php

https://OzReport.com/2018QuestAirpay.php

We will keep track of the order in which pilots are confirmed (everything is time and date stamped), check any forms for errors, and notify pilots if they are allowed entry into the meet.

Jonny won the first day with Steve in third, Scott in fourth and Josh in fifth with Niki in eighteenth. Steve won the second task with Josh in fourth, a tie, Niki in sixth and Jonny in eighth. Scott didn't make goal on that day.

Scott won the third task, with Steve in third, Josh in sixth, Jonny in seventh, and Niki just short of goal.

Jonny won the fourth task with Steve in third, Josh in eighth, Niki in tenth and Scott in thirteenth.

So Jonny won two tasks, Scott won two tasks, and Steve won one task. Both Scott and Jonny did not make goal on one of the tasks. Josh made goal and placed in the top ten on every task. Niki missed goal on one day.

Un zigzag day to goal. My personal goal is to be faster. Faster faster faster. It's not a matter of making goal anymore; have to be fast and charge ahead.

I did really well up until TP 3 at Warra where I slowed down. Caught up under the lead gaggle at the last turnpoint, but it wasn't the ticket to stay with them to goal.

Left for goal 25k away at 8 grand ASL in a cross wind under a beautiful cloud. I was trying to catch up to the boys ahead but couldn't. Eventually I had to stop 2km away from goal cylinder to get up because I wasn't going to make it. I put on the conservative brakes (probably too conservative) to ensure I'd make it.

I had track log issues with yesterday's flight. My vario would not pick up a GPS signal and so I flew the whole time not knowing where I was or how far I was from goal. Luckily I was using Airtribune which recorded my flight with a proper IGC file. I came in 22nd for the day.

Sasha barely nipped out Niki for first female.

Vicki writes:

We started late to allow more time for the paddock to dry out. The entrance to the paddock was still boggy at noon so only four wheel drives were allowed in. Parking was by the fence so no cars on the airfield. We had 15 pilots in the early bird launch that towed 15 minutes before the ordered launch started at 2. We have 69 pilots entered in the Open class and 7 in the Sport Class with 6 Dragonflys. We got the whole field away in just under 1.5 hours with about 6 reflys on each line. Launch conditions made everything run smoothly.

Tyler in first, Jonas third. Yoko, Niki, Alexandra short.

The first days

Canungra Classic 2017|John Smith|Niki Longshore|Rohan Taylor|Steve Blenkinsop

http://www.hgoutlanders.com/canungra-classic-days-2-3/

A 73km task was set taking us to the SW toward the beautiful Mt Lindsey. We then turn around and head back NE to a small country town of Rathdowney.

Takeoff conditions were light but it seemed most pilots were doing a good job of getting off the hill and up into the sky.

Once airborn we saw a NW wind of around 15-20kmph which swung a little more west and dropped off a bit as the day went on. Nearly all the pilots took the first start gate and headed off around 7,000ft towards the Kerry valley.

Forbes Flatlands Hang Gliding Championships 2016

What started out looking like it was going to be the worst Forbes comp ever turned out to be one of the best! I think we'll be talking about this one for a long time to come! It's all about the numbers! Our 10th consecutive Forbes Flatlands competition. 62 Pilots from 13 Countries 22 Crew from all over All together in 1 place, for 10 days, doing what we love, having fun, seeing old friends, making new friends and making the most of this amazing sport.

Conditions turned on for task 4 to allow us to set the longest task ever in a hang gliding competition. 368 km from Forbes to Walgett. A massive 26 pilots made the task, that's 41% of the field!

It was a personal best flight for all at goal except for Jonny Durand, Len Paton and Guy Hubbard. And a World Record flight for the only female pilot to make goal, the current World Champion Yoko Isomoto. And the Forbes mantra rings true "How Good is Forbes!"

All this made possible by so many people. Thank you: Meet Director: Wesley Hill. Operations: Thea O'Connor. Launch Director: Michael Zupanc. Goal Marshall: Rob Van Der Klooster. Bill and Molly Moyes and the tug pilots Bobby Bailey, Steve McCarthy, Bruce Crerar, Blaino and Marco Carelli. Launch crew: Richard Nevins, Sue Nevins, Lizzy Nevins, Jack Nevins, Yes the whole Nevins family! Christina Quinn, Tony Hanlon, Annie Crerar, Bena, Linda Zupanc. The Task Committee: Gerolf Heinrichs, Jonny Durand, Bruce Wynne. Safety Committee: Gordon Rigg, Lukas Bader, Nils Vesk. Protest Committee: Steve Blenkinsop, Glenn McFarlane, Trent Brown.

We set 6 Tasks totaling over 1000 kms with the leaders averaging 160 km per day, that's close to 100 miles per day! The consistent flying at Forbes is why we come back year after year. How good is Forbes!

Congratulations to all the winners!

Twenty five pilots made the goal 368 kilometers to the north in Walgett, breaking the previous world record for a task called and made in a competition of 346 km. Phil, Tulio, Glen, Gordon, Rowan show at goal. Jonny. Yoko Isomoto. Lenny. Jacko. Fredrico, Gavin, Michael. Malcolm, Steve Blenkinsop. Justinas. Tony, Simon, Gerolf. Josh Woods. Lukas. Nils. Howie. Guy. It's about midnight there now. Looks like they made it there at about 7:30 PM, some later. There was a strong tail wind. They would have been in the air seven or more hours. Long drive home and a task tomorrow?

Twenty one pilots made it to goal. Twenty one got minimum distance - 5 km. It was a fully valid day. There were nine start times. Paris took an earlier start time and got the most arrival time points but a hundred less speed points than Attila. Paris is a very fast pilot. This could be showing that it doesn't make a lot of sense to go out early on your own.

The average distance flown was 35 kilometers. With a nominal distance of 40 kilometers this is still long enough to make the distance validity 100%. Launch validity was 96% given that so many people who didn't fly. Only 45 of the 51 pilots on launch flew, 88%. Nominal launch validity was defaulted at 96%, i.e. if 96% of the pilots launched the launch validity would be 100%. Hang glider pilots have not used this variable before.

I sent Jonny a very short email with only a smiley face and the subject line, "No leading points." He wrote back:

Yes, that is correct, Davis. There was a push to have early start gates for the early guys due to conditions and having to be able to wait for so long around launch. It was decided we would not use leading points for the entire comp just time arrival. So, yes, in fact us stupid Canungra guys do actually know what scoring system we are using despite your comments. And to clarify the Durands do not own a launch site it was purchased years ago by the Canungra Club.

I'm so happy to see that Jonny understands the value of the OzGAP 2005 scoring system (invented in Australia by Michael Zupanc).

Well this is a surprise. At the Canungra Classic. At the competition that is flying from the Durand's launch, they are using OzGAP 2005 (maybe they don't even know this) and there are no leading points. There are no leading points for pilots who don't make goal. They may think that they are using GAP 2011, but that is just a label that signifies nothing. They are using OzGAP 2005. Arrival time points (that is special arrival time points) that are equal - approximately - to the sum of Leading Points and Arrival Position Points.

This is extremely amusing to me who has gone through so many "discussions" with Jonny and others regarding these scoring formulas.

You'll also note that Paris (now living in New Zealand but apparently still flying for the US) is no longer flying the Ukrainian Aeros glider, but an Australian-made Moyes.

http://chgc.asn.au.143us.blankserver.com/CanungraClassic.aspx

It wasn't a 1000 point day because the nominal time is an hour and a half and Steve got to the goal in an hour and twenty one minutes. The average distance flown was 41 km, and with the nominal distance set at a sport class or weak site 40 km, that was more than enough to have the distance validity equal to 1. Given that we assume an average speed of 40 km/h with an hour and a half nominal time you might expect the nominal distance to be at least 60 km.

But what do I know? I'm not there.
