Don't know if Jonny is flying a Gecko or not. Looks like he caught up to three other pilots after taking a clock fifteen minutes later. Steve Blenkinsop is back flying after injuries from his bicycle incident. Missing goal by 80 meters must have been a let down for Jason.

Sport Class flew a shorter version of the open task but pilots didn't make it back to Dalby. Interesting to see a U2 in the lead over the Geckos.

2018 Dalby Big Air

They fix the scoring system

Attila Bertok|Dalby Big Air 2018|Jon "Jonny" Durand jnr|Nick Purcell|Quest Air|Rohan Taylor|Steve Blenkinsop

Apparently they caught the scoring error from the first day and got rid of the goal arrival position points. So just distance and time used for scoring on this first day. They also used elapsed time instead of a bunch of start gates. I've not seen that before, but have proposed it for our first day of the 2018 Quest Air Nationals. I'll have to ask Jonny Durand exactly why they don't go with the default scoring system on the first day of their competitions.

Jonny won the first day with Steve in third, Scott in fourth and Josh in fifth with Niki in eighteenth. Steve won the second task with Josh in fourth, a tie, Niki in sixth and Jonny in eighth. Scott didn't make goal on that day.

Scott won the third task, with Steve in third, Josh in sixth, Jonny in seventh, and Niki just short of goal.

Jonny won the fourth task with Steve in third, Josh in eighth, Niki in tenth and Scott in thirteenth.

So Jonny won two tasks, Scott won two tasks, and Steve won one task. Both Scott and Jonny did not make goal on one of the tasks. Josh made goal and placed in the top ten on every task. Niki missed goal on one day.

Un zigzag day to goal. My personal goal is to be faster. Faster faster faster. It's not a matter of making goal anymore; have to be fast and charge ahead.

I did really well up until TP 3 at Warra where I slowed down. Caught up under the lead gaggle at the last turnpoint, but it wasn't the ticket to stay with them to goal.

Left for goal 25k away at 8 grand ASL in a cross wind under a beautiful cloud. I was trying to catch up to the boys ahead but couldn't. Eventually I had to stop 2km away from goal cylinder to get up because I wasn't going to make it. I put on the conservative brakes (probably too conservative) to ensure I'd make it.

Americans top guns in sky

American pilots Michael Bilyk and Paris Williams were leading the Australian National Hang Gliding Championships yesterday after the completion of four tasks of the Forbes-based event.

The US pair were first and second respectively after two consecutive tasks to Wellington on Monday and Tuesday, while yesterday the 52 strong field flew 152.8km to Stockinbingal, via Crowther.

German pilot Lukas Bader, third in the overall standings, won Tuesday’s 155.8km task to Wellington, ahead of Australian trio Nick Purcell, Guy Hubbard and Gavin Myers.

Conrad Loten, Glen McFarland and Trent Brown were the task committee today. I've been asking various pilots to be on the task committee one day at a time so as not to over burden any three pilots for the whole meet. Many pilots will not serve on the task committee (it is a lot of work and you get little or no reward). So it comes down to having the same people calling the same type of tasks, which may or may not be appropriate for the long term success of the competition. Also I noted that some pilots were concerned that certain tasks were called by certain pilots to match their skills as opposed to what was best for the competition. I'm sure that they had good reasons for this.

My input to the task committee consists of the weather. I have little or no influence on the actual task, other than to find skilled and opinioned pilots who are willing to be on the task committee. On the second day I proposed a possible task as I had a few minutes extra before the task committee meets (I get there to the bowling club an hour early to go over the weather), and it was rejected immediately. I didn't propose any before and have not since.

The forecast was for 15 knot southwestern wind, lift to 9,000' to 10,000' and better lift than the day before. A good day it appeared. No cu's, of course.

The task committee called a task to the northeast given the winds, but there are limited options (waypoints) in that direction. One possibility was to go straight line 200 kilometers to Dunedoo, but that seemed too easy and a long ways back, especially on New Years night. Glen or Conrad (I don't remember which) proposed a zig zag in the middle of the course to make it more difficult and sent us back to Wellington airfield.

The task guidelines are to set the most difficult part of the task as the last leg, not the second or middle leg, but as I said they felt that there were limited options in that direction. We could have gone straight to Gulgong airfield, as another possibility which was discussed by the task committee.

Here is that task they decided on:

As you can see it goes right through Parkes airspace, which we can do with our VHF AM (airband) radios. The first turnpoint at Yeoval and the second at Cumnoc have five kilometer radii to reduce the cross wind leg. The task is 158 kilometers long.

The wind was out of the southeast when we got to Bill's tow paddock next to the airfield. This would have made it quite difficult to accomplish the task. But just as we started launching it swung around.

I was twelfth in the right line and pinned off at 1,000' AGL in light lift. I finally found the core and the lift was as forecast. I was soon over 7,000' and cold because I didn't listen to my own weather forecast calling for eight degrees Celsius at the top of lift and hadn't worn enough clothes.

Almost all pilots headed northwest toward the edge of the ten kilometer start circle like we did yesterday, but I didn't think that that was a great idea. The first leg of the task today was much further to the east and I wanted to leave the start cylinder closer to the course line. I got near the northeast extent of the start cylinder but didn't find any good lift along the way so had to drift three kilometers outside it before I got up, back over 7,000'. I then headed back inside the start cylinder into a 21 mph head wind to take the second clock, not high (5,200'), but high enough.

Running down the course line I found some nice lift and looking ahead saw Paris was five other gliders very low racing way down below and just in front of me. I checked their progress until I saw Paris turning and then went over to them to find strong lift to 7,000'. Instead of leaving them when I was high above, I waited until they caught up so that I could fly with them. Paris, Conrad and I took off together toward the town of Parkes.

Sixteen kilometers later we were down to below 3,500'. I kept shading to the east (right) toward the airfield (no commercial jets would be landing on this day). They got lower and lower again as I found good lift and watched half a dozen pilots work their way back up again. When they found a good core I joined up with them high.

The next thermal was much better and a dozen of us climbed to 7,800' before the range that we needed to cross to head toward Yeoval. We were just six kilometers south of the Parkes dish (radio antenna).

I didn't think much of the lift just on the west edge of the range so went to the left of Jonny out in front to see what was on the other side. I found 400+ and then 500 fpm in much better thermals. I was freezing now and shivering at 8,800'.

Getting the turnpoint at Yeoval was easy and then the big turn into the 17 mph direct cross wind went well as I stayed high and found 450+ fpm to 8,100'. I could see Conrad way below.

Racing out of that thermal Rod Flockhart caught me and flying at 55 mph he pulled ahead (I was doing 45 mph) as we quickly made the Cumnoc turnpoint and headed to the northeast.

There was a 350 fpm thermal waiting for us and a bunch of us got up right away to 7,900'. It was beginning to feel warm. There was a range right along our course line just ahead and I went for it. The wind would be flowing along the ridge line.

I glided for sixteen kilometers right over the ridge and didn't find any lift. I had to turn out to the valley to the west as Jonas Lobitz came scooting by and Paris Williams came 500' over us. With the sixteen mph tail wind Jonas was going fast but getting awfully low as was I. Finally at 1,100' AGL he found something and I joined him. We were in survival mode and drifting very quickly down the course line.

We worked 100 to 200 fpm for eight kilometers climbing 2,500' in seventeen minutes. This saved us but really slowed us down. We then found 600 fpm eighteen kilometers from goal and that got us in.

Forbes Flatlands, Task 1, day 1

Attila suggests a change that makes the task easier

Attila Bertok|Cameron Tunbridge|Conrad Loten|Davis Straub|Enda Murphy|Filippo Oppici|Forbes Flatlands 2013|Jon "Jonny" Durand jnr|Jon Durand jnr|Jon Durand snr|Kathryn O'Riordan|Nick Purcell|Paris Williams|Phil Schroder|Rohan Taylor|Steve Blenkinsop|Trent Brown|Wills Wing|Wills Wing T2C

The forecast was for lift better than the day before but not quite as good as the first day. We would be able to get to 8,000'. The winds would start light but build to 11 knots south west. Again no cu's.

The task committee called a dogleg to Tomingley (with a eleven kilometer cylinder) just to keep us on the mountain range and then to Yeoval, but there was some kind of hubbub about that so after a discussion with the Task Committee and input from Attila, they changed the goal to Wellington airfield. The course line would have taken us through Parkes airspace which is okay with our air band radios. (The Sport Class goal was straight o Yeoval right smack dab through the Parkes airspace and one pilot made it.)

Unlike day 2 there was plenty of lift right away and I climbed to 5,000' and a little later to almost 6,000'. The winds varied between four and twelve mph out of the south west.

We moved quickly to the northwest to get upwind of the course line and to the edge of the ten kilometer start cylinder. There were plenty of pilots around. The wind pushed us back toward the course line and Jonny, Attila, and Jon Snr took the 2:30 PM first start clock (which turned out not to do them any good at all). The rest of us waited for the 2:50 clock and a big gaggle took off then.

The lift varied between 400 and 500 fpm on average. Good cores that allowed one to put the glider up on a tip if there wasn't any interference from other gliders. There was a eleven mph tail wind, so the going was easy.

I was a bit lower than the top guys in the lead gaggle. Paris, Steve Blenkisop, Jonas and another pilot jumped ahead of the gaggle. Later I took off from lower down the gaggle following one higher pilot while the rest stayed behind. This got me into better lift quicker and when the gaggle caught me I was now relatively much higher.

We came to the ridge south of the Tomingley turnpoint plenty high and found good lift. Paris, etc. were high above us but we were climbing fast. We found good lift going over the ridge to the east and on the other side. Paris, Steve, and Jonas got flushed on the other side and watched us as we flew other them as they dug their way out of a small valley.

We continued to find good lift going east although I had to stop for 250 fpm before I went further into the next set of hills to get 500 fpm to 7,500'. There were pilots all around in various thermals getting up.

It was a nineteen kilometer glide to the ridge west of Wellington and the last obstacle before goal at the airfield. We were down to 1,700' AGL before four of us got into 200 fpm which was the last thermal needed to get to goal thirteen kilometers away. We had no problem making it in.

Plenty of pilots at goal, thirty five to be exact.

Jonny writes:

Day 1 turned out good with climbs to over 9,000ft and mostly blue. We had a 25 kph cross wind most of the 140 Kms but conditions allowed about 15 pilots to make goal. Atilla won the day in under 3 hrs with me hot on heels then Paris about 10 minutes later. Today is looking good as is most of the week!

Gliding into the rain to goal on the fourth task

Adam Parer|Attila Bertok|Facebook|Grant Heaney|John Smith|Jon "Jonny" Durand jnr|Konrad Heilmann|Nick Purcell|weather|Wills Wing|Wills Wing T2C

http://www.gulgongclassic.com/

http://www.warrenwindsports.com.au/blog/travel-flying-xc/gulgong-classic-2012-task-1-2-3-4

The 200km task to the East was changed because of a problem with airspace and a 126km task south with four turnpoints was set instead. I was late to the launch line and got a tow about 15 minutes before the last start. After climbing out to the cloud base at 10,000ft I crossed the start line with two minutes left. It was catch up time and I had a fast run to heavily shaded in 2nd turn point where I climbed with Jonny who left on final from 34km's out.

After grabbing the last two turnpoints I did a long glide to the hills 20km from goal. I found lift and climbed until I had 11/1 glide and knew I could make it easy. Thing was the there was a storm cell raining on course between me and goal and after a while of waiting I thought it wasn't worth the risk and so I flew back and landed by a road away from the rain and gust fronts.

Seven made goal and Trent won the day and with Jonny in 2nd. Big news is Attila landed about 15 km short so the overall scores got a shake up and Jonny will now be in the lead. One day to go and the weather looks iffy.

Jonny Durand writes:

What another great day in Gulgong, a 140km task was set and it started off very slowly with many pilots having reflights. Just as the start gate came to a close the day started to turn on and we were off and racing. Trent Brown and Conrad Loten had the best starts and the rest of were late to the gate.

I eventually caught Trent after about 40 kms and took the lead. I stayed in the lead for nearly the rest of the task before I got low in the rain front. Trent came over me about 20kms from goal at cloudbase along with others trailing behind him. I had to take a light climb and finished about 15 minutes after Trent. Nick Purcell will take out 2nd place with John smith in 3rd. I think about 10-12 pilots made goal in the end with Matt Barlow just squeezing in late. Tomorrow looks like another good day so stay tuned.

FS is great, until things go wrong. The manual scoring options are fairly limited. The first day is up. These results are wrong, as Jason Kth, Jonas Lobitz and Peter Ebeling all made goal. I am still working to correct this.

Coming Soon

Dalby Big Air 2009|dust devil|Nick Purcell|Trent Brown

Nick Purcell «n.purcell» writes:

After catching up with a few pilots at the Canungra Classic and more recently the Forbes Flatlands, I am hearing that there is quite a bit of interest from guys who are heading up to Dalby and experiencing the flying for them selves. I spoke to Trent Brown today (who is doing fine after he and I had a bit of a scare with a dust devil at Forbes). Trent is heading up with a car load of pilots from the Canberra area along with the usual car loads from the New Castle guys and Bryon guys. Also Bruce Wynne is heading up with a few guys from Sydney.

This year is looking like being huge with support for the first time from the QLD government with a sporting grant as well as the Commercial Hotel in Dalby.

If you're thinking of heading up for an awesome week of flying, drinking with your mates and experiencing some truly amazing country then register at http://www.hgfa.asn.au/~registration/index.php or check out our web site at http://www.hgfa.asn.au/~dhgc/.

March Sun 8th - Sat 14th with practice day on the 7th.

Trent Brown after smacking in

Concussion?

dust devil|Gordon Rigg|Nick Purcell|Trent Brown

The doctors have told Trent that he can't fly for at least two months. No hitting his head within that time period. He hit is pretty hard. That's why we wear helmets.

Nick Purcell states that he didn't pin off, but was kicked off and the weaklink broke. But he does admit that he went back into the "dust devil" before it kicked him out. He saw Trent get speared in and ran to land.

Trent also says that he didn't pin off, bit was knocked off by the rough air.

Readers might remember a few years back when Gordon Rigg was knocked off his tow after going through rough air at Hay, went back to it to get up, tucked the glider and through his chute just in time to save himself. He jumped on another glider and made goal.

Kingpost? Who cares?

Bobby Bailey|crash|Flytec 6030|Jon "Jonny" Durand jnr|Nick Purcell|Robert Reisinger|Trent Brown

The results.

Forbes is an amazing place to fly. We are having so much fun in the air. All the task days have been extraordinary and Tuesday was beyond belief.

The forecast was for 500 fpm and clouds to the north again with blue over us and to our south. There must be a trough hanging around. It is amazing to see this line at the edge of the clouds just to our north.

The lift was supposed to go to 12,000' according to the RASP forecast with winds at 12-14 knots out of the west again, but only 6 to 8 knots on the ground (20 knots at the top of the lift).

The task committee (Gerolf came up with this task) called a task to the northeast, 194 km to Gulgong with a turnpoint at Yeoval just to keep us by the roads for retrieval. A long task but with the strong winds, we should be able to accomplish it fairly quickly.

We knew that there would be a major component of cross wind as we had to go northeast in a wind that might be west northwesterly, but that's where the goals were and we didn't want to do the same task as yesterday.

Pilots were lined up early, so I had to wait a bit to get going. The first ten pilots or so were high above me when I started thermaling out of the tow paddock. I had only 36 minutes to get up and make the start gate 15 kilometers away.

We were in the blue but there was good lift and plenty of clouds to the north and northeast. We only had to get up and head for the clouds after the start gate opened. I climbed to an extremely high altitude and got quite cold ( 3° Celsius) even though I was prepared for it.

I topped out at 10 minutes before the start time and headed toward the edge of the start circle where I hooked up with Robert Reisinger and Jonny Durand. Gerolf, Michi, and Attila were further to our west (more upwind) but too far away to see.

We headed for the start circle and made the start 21 seconds after the window opened. We were high and racing, what a great start. I was halfway between Robert and Jonny. Robert was just below me and Jonny was out in front at my altitude.

Jonny veered a little to the right to go around the south side of Parkes and Robert veered a little to left to go toward Parked. I went with Jonny. Ten minutes into the flight we ran into strong lift. I saw 1,600 fpm on my 20 second averager on the 6030. I had never seen that value before.

The lift was completely smooth and averaged over 1000 fpm throughout the thermal. I had never seen that value on SeeYou for any of my climbs. I got stinking high again as I watched Robert get very very small.

It was freezing cold up there and I was beginning to shake and was worried that the whole flight might take place at high altitudes. I needn't have worried as I was soon down to a very comfortable 6,500' when I found the next thermal. Lukas Bader and five other pilots came in way below me.

I saw Gerolf, Attila, Michi and one other pilot (probably Blay) thermaling further up the course line and I headed toward them high. Jonny had found another thermal and was ahead of all of us at this point and on his own.

As I came over to these guys they all headed out on course. I came in right next to Gerolf, just a little above him and we glided together for the next 10.5 km, gliding with each other the whole way. We basically had the same glide ratio.

We were gliding at 41 mph (TAS), with an L/D of 12 cross wind.

Michi and Attila found some broken lift and after a short while I decided to head out first. I picked a poor line and fell out of the sky while my compatriots went a little to the right and kept getting smaller as I searched hard for lift.

Down to 1,500' AGL I came over near Peter Dall on the ATOS and we searched together until getting almost low enough to head to the road to land. I hit strong lift in a gully and thanks to the great handling of the Litesport was able to watch Peter turn into a very small glider.

Attila, Gerolf and Michi came and joined me in my savior thermal and we all climbed out ready to hit the turnpoint.

The next task was to get over the hills west of Wellington. Gerolf got quite low before the hills while Attila and I headed to the nice gap in the hills south of Wellington. Jonny was well ahead of us and flew right over the town. Lukas came in low below me in the nice strong thermal.

There were plenty of clouds on the course line and we just flew to them to find lift. Not always, but often enough. We were well south of the road from Wellington to Gulgong, and when I saw the paved road that I had seen down below end in a dirt road I became aware of this fact and for sure wanted to stay up.

Julia (the Russian girl) found a nice thermal just when I wanted one and we climbed up to cloud base 40 kilometers from goal. As soon as I got to base I headed on final glide at 11.5 required L/D. I made 19.7:1 with a 16 mph tail wind (slightly cross). Julia and I got to the goal at the same time. I was able to push the Litesport to 56 mph.

Michi, Gerolf, Jonny and Robert all came up to me and said how well the Litesport was gliding. I was keeping up with all of them. On the first glide with Jonny I was trailing him and almost keeping up with him. He couldn't shake me.

I glided above and just to the right of Robert for a long glide. I chased Michi and Attila for 10.5 km and stayed with them. Attila was so happy that I found that thermal low because he and everyone else in the vicinity used it to get up.

Gerolf just ran over to me at goal and was gleeful to see his Litesport doing so well.

Now for the bad news.

A couple or maybe four pilots decided to play a dangerous game yesterday. Deliberately going into a dust (grass) devil very low. Leroy pulled a pilot through it at 400 feet and was so happy to get out of it when he saw the pilot behind him pin off in it. What an idiot he thought. Bobby Bailey had flown through it and said it was the worst air he had ever flown in.

Trent Brown and Nick Purcell plus one or two additional pilots tried to enter the grass devil low. The gliders were described by observers as puppets on a string. Their noses were slammed up. Nick's nose then went straight down and he almost tucked low. He flew away and landed.

Trent was slammed/pancaked into the ground. He is currently in the hospital. He was up and walking around yesterday, but has suffered some injuries. The glider took most of the force of the impact unlike what happened with Steve Elliot the other day, when it took none of the impact.

This is a totally avoidable situation. Leroy was mad at the pilot for pinning off so low. No one needed to go into this thermal so low.

The launch was suspended until Trent was taken to the hospital. Additional start times were added to allow later pilots to get a good time. About half the field hadn't launched before the dangerous game was played.

I'll do some detailed analysis of the Litesport gliding with other gliders later.

We all headed out to Dalby for what felt like the first real flying weekend in ages. It's been raining loads for the past few months. Saturday was a cracker, great looking sky. The first part was a bit slow but things got better the further west we went wit most of us getting up to 8600' base. Cam and I made it to Dulacca 162km. Sunday was looking a bit overcast so we didn't bother trying to fly anywhere, we just hung around the Airport in the light lift. I have been working on my own version of a racing pod that also has the 6030 out in the front. After talking to some of the top pilots here in OZ and as well as Jeff Shapiro at Forbes, they all seemed to like the idea of having the main instrument 6030 out the front with the 76CSX behind.

My Pods are constructed out of epoxy resin and structural woven glass matting, giving light weight whilst being very strong. My pods all sell for $290AU, I also make carbon clips to suit Moyes Zoom downtube, Airborne and Aeros streamlined downtube..

Check out more photo's of my pods to suit Brauniger and Flytec 6030, Flytec 4030, Brauniger IQ Comp GPS with the Garmin 76CSX, as well as Carbon keels at http://www.millenniumpods.com/index.php or email me at «n.purcell» to place an order.

Dalby Big Air - day 5

Dalby day 5

No cu's so a short downwind task

Cameron Tunbridge|Dalby Big Air 2008|Nick Purcell

The results are here: http://www.soaringspot.com/2008dba/.

No cu's all day and reports from the tug pilots of low inversions kept us waiting on the ground until about one thirty. Finally, Kieran launched, as did Rod Flockhart and I was right behind them in Raef's Airborne Fun 190 with the big wheels.

I found a thermal right away, but it only took me to 2,600' AGL before I lost it. Dave Seib and Rod who were just above me went back up wind to find lift, but I couldn't make it that far and landed back at launch. It took a while to get going again. Cameron Tunbridge was going slow also and had three launches, which put him back there a ways in the scoring today.

The second time up I figured I had to go downwind no matter what so I hung with less than 100 fpm leaving the start circle at 2,500' AGL. Things did not look great ahead as there was no where in particular to go.

Losing the lift at 2,800' AGL, I headed back toward the highway and dark fields. Who knew where good lift was?

Down to 1,100' AGL, I felt the lift and climbed out at the amazing rate of 200 fpm back to 2,700' AGL. What is the deal with the lift stopping so low?

Back toward the black fields near the highway again, and I found lift at 900' right smack dab over the highway. Why there is unclear. Maybe the bare fields nearby.

I hung around in this one and gained 1,800' in 17 minutes, drifting down wind. Now I was over the river too far to get back to the highway and no dark fields cross wind toward the highway, so I headed for the cultivated fields downwind. There are so many fewer choices when you don't get up high.

No luck. I came in over Nick Purcell at 100' and landed in the field next to him.

Dave Seib had scooted to goal getting there first by four minutes. Trevor Purcell came in second to gain almost four hundred points on Cameron.

Dalby in the rain

Dalby

The sun is coming mates

Jason Reid|Nick Purcell|record|sailplane

Jason Reid «jasonr» writes:

No surprises up here at the moment, its wet like the rest of eastern Australia. Dalby has recorded approx 130mm of rain in the past 48hrs and there is definitely more on the way over the next few days. Obviously, it's great news for the local economy (which relies heavily on farming), but what about the flying?

Sure the area around Dalby is flat, but it does drain quickly and all we need is a couple of days of sun to dry the surface of most paddocks and away we go again. I have a photo taken from a paddock 180 kms west of Dalby that we landed in a few days after Christmas ’07. We were flying out there in huge conditions with average climbs in excess of 800 ft/min and cloud base over 8000ft agl only days after this area received flash flooding rain. Water was noticeable in all low lying areas, but the top few centimeters of most paddocks were dry and in fact producing defined dusties.

As you know we have the Dalby Big Air scheduled from 8th to 15th March (only 4 and a bit weeks away). I have spoken to some of the local farmers that also fly sailplanes and they believe we will see the rain continue for the next two weeks, but then dry up for March. Long range forecasts from BOM and other sites also show a decline in rainfall towards the end of February so if they are correct we should see some very nice conditions for the comp (http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/ahead/rain_ahead.shtml)

Comp organizers are currently looking to finalise tug and tow pilot numbers, but they are finding it difficult to predict numbers at this stage. I encourage any hang glider pilot thinking of attending the Dalby Big Air to get online and register for the comp so organizers have a better chance of making the right call re tug numbers. Please register at http://www.hgfa.asn.au/~registration/ or contact Nick Purcell «[n.purcell»] for more information.

Dalby on the long weekend

January 29, 2008, 8:00:19 GMT+1100

Dalby

Ooh, just look at those clouds

Nick Purcell|video

Nick Purcell «n.purcell» writes:

There were the usual suspects out at Dalby for the Australia Day long weekend, Yodes, Cam, Barfly, Frodo, Blaino, Smokey and the best driver in the world, Karen and myself. We were treated to typical Dalby flying with amazing looking clouds on the Saturday. We set a task from Dalby Airport to Jandowae, 44km away then on to the Silos on the eastern edge of Chinchilla 46km leg. We then decided to close the triangle and head back to Dalby, but there was some ugly development building to the south that forced us back along the same way we had just come.

The cloud and flying pictures here.

I flew with a juvenile Wedgie for two thermals. This little guy, well, he wasn't that little with probably 5-6ft across the wings, didn't know what to make of me and just cruised around me for at least ten minutes. What an awesome experience just flying with one of these magnificent birds. After that I ended up trying to jump a bit of a blue hole and decked it 15km short of Jandowae, Yodes was the star of the day making it back to the Airport with a 181 km dog leg flight.

A short video of flying with the eagle here.

Sunday was much the same looking sky with a light breeze out of the south west, we all got up easily from tow and headed down the road towards chinchilla, as we got to Brigalow the call was made to try and do a triangle back threw Jandowae then back to the Airport. The first leg was an easy run under good looking clouds with climbs around 500-700ft pm averages. From the turnpoint I found nothing which was surprising as the sky was working well. Cam was right behind me and found a good climb to the right of course line and was now out on his own leading the way. Yodes was now at the turnpoint with Frodo and soon flying over head as I finished my pack up. The day started to over developed to the south, east and the north east which made things interesting for Cam and Yodes. Cam got to within 9km of Dalby Airport and Yodes 11km having to fly around developing rain showers on the final leg. Frodo landed 5km out of Jandowae another victim of the shaded ground.

All in all it was a great weekend away from the city, good night out with everyone on the Saturday night with a few drinks. I'm looking forward to the Dalby Big Air in March if this weekend is anything to go by it should be an epic week.

Dalby

The hot spot in Queensland

Jason "Yoda" Reid writes:

What's so special about Dalby?

I can't answer for everyone, but I do know why Dalby is special for me, it's the air time and the people that make Dalby such a great place for cross country flights. Consistently great all-year-round, good soaring conditions average height gain around 8000ft combined with great terrain and plenty of roads fanning out in all directions from Dalby township and a friendly farming communities who are amazed at what we do and how far we have just flown. I never get tired of answering their curious questions.

On an average weekend we can get around ten pilots showing up early at the hangar, eager for a good weekend of cross country flying. The most common direction we tend to fly is west towards Chinchilla 80km, it's not uncommon to fly over 100km in winter and in summer flights regularly as far as Miles 120km down the road and Delacca 160km and beyond. When you combine all that with great aero towing facilities and a good bunch of pilots (hang glider and Tug) the hours and cross country kms clock up quickly.

In case you don't know Dalby it's a medium sized town on the eastern Darling Downs in Southeast Queensland approximately two and a half hours drive west of Brisbane. Our club is situated on the town airfield (virtually right in town) and we occupy a very spacious hangar with enough room for both Dragonfly Tugs and a few setup gliders. The Dalby Aerodrome Board kindly allowed us to clad one of their existing open structure hangars for a reduced rental agreement and continue to be very supportive of our operation.

We are very fortunate to have two Moyes Dragonflies permanently housed in our hangar, one owned by the club and maintained by Blaino who is also one of our many tug pilots within the club, not forgetting Smokey, our tug master. The other Dragonfly is owned by very generous club members Bruce and Annie Crera. We have excellent tug pilots and a wealth of experience with pilots from all aspects of aviation regularly attending the club.

Now about the flying: I'm not the best at keeping records of my flying (usually just a quick note in my work diary on Monday mornings), but I do know I have easily averaged over 200 hours in less than 80 flights per year every year since flying with the Dalby Hang Gliding Club A quick flick through my diary reveals entries like - Saturday 3rd February 07, Dalby to Ambi 315 kms six hours. Took off too late and blew a record day.

Sunday 4th February 07, Dalby to Dulacca 160 kms 2.5 hours, stayed high and going faster than yesterday, but landed early for easy Sunday retrieve. Sunday 11th March 07, Dalby to Kilkivan 160 kms 3.2 hours, awesome country north of Kingaroy, definitely room for longer flights heading this way to the north coast through to Bundaber, hit convergence line of SW and SE winds with dark street continuing out of sight to the north with average ground speed of 100 kph at trim, stayed above 9000 ft for last hour pushing a long way north of Kilkivan but back tracked to Kilkivan for easy Sunday retrieve.

Saturday 28 July 07 Dalby-Blackbutt 90 kms hours, nice blue winter day to 7000ft, easy to stay high and make Blackbutt for retrieve. It's probably worth noting that these flights were on my Wills Wings U2 160 kingposted glider. Conditions are truly awesome all year.

I, like so many Dalby club pilots, have logged so many great flights from Dalby that it's starting to become hard to remember any that really stand out, but one thing is for sure, I never get bored of flying this area and I never lose the butterflies before jumping into my harness as any day could be the "Big Air" day at Dalby. Speaking of big air, in case you were not aware our club hosts a great tow competition each year in March named the "Dalby Big Air". The next Big Air is a AA Sanctioned comp and will be held between the 9th to the 15th March 2008, practice day on the Saturday 8th March. Well it's officially registered as a competition, but to the regular Dalby crew it feels like any other flying day, lots of quality cross country flying, and plenty of beer, heaps of model flying and great laughs.

I love flying Dalby and I highly recommend the experience to anyone looking for consistent inland conditions, and amazing thermals. We also have a club Web site (thanks Tex) with more info on the 2008 Dalby Big Air go to http://www.hgfa.asn.au/~dhgc/, over the past few years the Big Air has been getting bigger and bigger with more pilots making the long drive from down south, just to enjoy and be part of the Big Air fun, so if your interested in having a great week of flying contact Nick Purcell on «n.purcell» for more info and registration for the Dalby Big Air 2008.

If you need assistance with learning the art of aero towing please contact me by email at «jasonr». We ask that you join the club (only $80), have current HGFA membership, an intermediate rating, suitable gear and inland experience and the ability to shout a few rounds at the pub each night. In return we will provide tow instruction for free (by SSO's), training tows at a reduced rate and a bloody good time.

If your looking for a fun weekend of flying, catching up with some good pilots or happen to find yourself in the area, your always welcome to join in on the fun, drop me an email to see when we are heading out to Dalby next, your more than welcome to join us.

Jason "Yoda" Reid took the photos also.

Starting the first of December I will be reporting from Dalby at the Australian Record Encampment.

I didn't realize that the Dalby boys had moved their Dalby Big Air meet forward to be a week after the NSW State Titles. Nick Purcell «n.purcell» writes:

I just wanted to let you know that I am organising the next Dalby Big Air 2008 tow comp. I know that you have heard lots about how awesome the flying is and how much fun the pilots have during the comp. I have also moved the comp dates closer the other comp dates in a hope to attract some of the international comp pilots that might still be in the country. The dates for the Big Air 2008 are 9th to the 15th March. Previous years the comp has been held later in the year around Easter.

ADV: Instrument Pods to suit Flytec & Bräuniger varios »

Combine varios and GPSes in a streamlined instrument pod.

Nick Purcell «npurcell» writes:

A lot of pilots are now flying with the new 76S GPS from Garmin, the 76S GPS has heaps of new features that can really help your flying when out on course heading for the goal line, with its large screen and other new features. I have developed a new instrument pod (cockpit) that holds the Garmin 76 GPS and either Flytec or Bräuniger vario in a light weight, very strong and streamlined pod. The pods are made out of either Fiberglas or Carbon Fibber. With the US comps starting up soon I have had a few pilots place orders for both the Carbon and Fibber glass pods. It usually takes me around a week to make a pod and a couple of days to ship any where in the States.

The pods when finished weigh 350 grams or 12 ounces, they are a hollow construction with an aluminum fitting for the bracket to be screwed into, the air speed probe is recessed, making less drag and protecting it from damage. They can be painter in your choice of colours. I now have my web page up and running, you can see the pods at http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~npurcell/ or email me for more information.
