Judging their own

The Aerobatic pilots were happy to get their own competition
program under the USHPA at the last BOD meeting which at least gives them the
outlines of what should happen next. They've got a three day meet set for the
last three days of the
East Coast
Championship in early June. They are also set for the Santa Cruz Flats Race
in September to go along with the Festival of Flight that will be put on by the
local hang gliding club.

One problem seems to be finding judges. They have always complained that the
judges are poor and poorly trained. The USHPA set aside some money for training
as did the Foundation for Free Flight and CIVL.

David Glover came up with what I consider a perfect solution. Aerobatic pilots
should judge each other out in the open. Pilots are towed up one at a time. The
pilot does his routine and all the other competitors judge it, discussing it
among themselves. With everyone around them listening in.

If you think about it for a while, you'll see why this is a perfect solution -
prisoner's dilemma.

last Nov at Wallaby Ranch (http://ozreport.com/13.229#6).
When someone has an accidental death in Florida it's treated as a crime scene
until there is evidence that an accidental death occurred. That being said all
of Tony's belongings were taken by the police and placed in storage. I was
allowed to retrieve the glider last month but haven't as yet been allowed to get
the remaining stuff.

There was an interesting missing piece to the puzzle though. The morning before
the accident his eye glasses came apart and fell on the ground. Tony's eye sight
was so bad he couldn't even find them on the ground next to him. I helped him
locate a small screw driver and put the glasses back together. That was about
three hours before he pushed out to launch.

He flew for approximately forty minutes and at the accident site he talked
about not having his glasses and the people helping him weren't sure if he had
them at the time he crashed.

The police just informed me that he had no glasses at the hospital and that
there are no glasses in storage either. That leads me to believe he may not of
had is glasses on at the time of the accident. This would make perfect sense of
his approach and landing in that tree on the southwest side of the ranch.
