FAI sphere or WGS 84?

There are different methods to calculate distances on the earth's surface.  In paragliding and hang gliding sports two systems are used, the (older) FAI sphere and the WGS84 ellipsoid.  The WGS84 ellipsoid needs more calculation power than the FAI sphere.  Therefore the FAI sphere method is better suited for flight instruments; whereas, PC based flight evaluation software use the WGS84 ellipsoid

Due to changes in the FAI web site I don't have access on their site to distance calculations using the FAI sphere instead of the WGS 84 ellipsoid, but you can find it here: http://microguard.dk/bookmark/icons/great-circle-calculator.htm. I also don't have access to the latest FAI/CIVL documents re distance measurements from the FAI web site.

The last discussion was about changing the distance formula from FAI sphere to WGS84, which is required by the FAI general section.  This cannot be done on a general basis today for hang gliding, as the majority of the pilots in the next Cat 1 event will still be stuck with older FAI sphere only instruments (Flytec 6030's), while it is viable for paragliding where the access to newer instruments makes this less of a problem.  The time frame for changing to SeeYou/GAP scoring from May 2018 would include the change to WGS84, and as such it should be a natural point to introduce this change for both hang gliding and paragliding in the rules regarding distance calculations.  If possible, we could implement WGS84 as an option in FS in addition the FAI Sphere from now on, and this option could be used where appropriate in PG competitions with large turnpoints.

The story

Corinna Schwiegershausen|record

https://www.redbull.com/br-pt/recorde-mundial-em-asa-delta-no-brasil

The translation here.

Corinna Schwiegershaunsen: I wanted to hit two records.  One of them was the free distance, a 403.5 km mark that was to be surpassed by at least one kilometer.  At the same time, I wanted to break the record we call the 'declared distance goal', in which the pilot previously declares a specific point wheres he will arrive.  For this it needed to reach a predetermined point, 367 km from the takeoff.  So if I could fly 405 km with a goal previously declared and homologated, I could overcome the two marks at once.  This seemed like a good opportunity.

Using GPS coordinates, I had been trying to fly from Tacima, in Paraíba, to Juatama, which is the official landing for the Quixada ramp in Ceará. It ended up being a lot harder than I imagined and it took a long time to get there.

In fact it was my Brazilian friend, Marcelo Abbott, who suggested that I go to Tacima to try the world distance record, which had not been broken in 16 years.  First I thought, "Will it?" I had never thought of doing anything like this, so he told me that some people had already performed flights larger than 400 km at that location.  I thought about it calmly and thought maybe it might be a good idea.  I booked four weeks for the attempts, to travel, to know the region and to prepare myself.  It was not easy, but I got here and was able to fly with my friends.

She finally gets time to write it up

Corinna Schwiegershausen

http://corinnaflies.blogspot.com.br/2017/11/final-day-it-really-happened.html

I took off as the first pilot, waiting for the others, climbing out together and crossing the canyon plateau at the luxurious height of 1200m, about 600m above ground.  Always a relief when it worked!  Flying over to the next plateau at Lagoa Nova, the next big step, was not easy.

I was glad that Thalis and Marcelinho were with me, even though Thalis makes strange choices about his flying route sometimes.  "Left, left!" he yelled into the radio.  Ok, there was one cloud.  But then?  He didn't know, and didn't think about the next step.

Marcelinho found a strong lift, and we skyrocketed up to 1800m already.  After that, I decided to go to some good looking clouds on the other side of the plateau, while the guys preferred another way.  But we met again anyway, which was great.  Until Apodi we flew together, but then the guys dropped me, as I missed one good climb and had to wait for another one to pick me up.

Oh well, another 3 hours of thermals, with 150 unknown km ahead of me. I will try my best!  The landscape got a bit greener at times, but still hills.  Luckily a few clouds left on my way, so I could head on.

About 30km before my goal, I realized that with the tailwind I could really make it on a last, big glide!  When I finally arrived in Juatama, I could not believe it! Almost 9 hours of flying, my longest flight ever.  After all the hardship of the three weeks before this day, I really made my goal on the last possible day!
