Great day of aero-towing in Brentwood, CA. Five pilots flew, and everyone soared.  Two guys relaunched after not feeling ready to go cross country.  Three pilots flew cross country to the south: Two in the 30-40 mile range, and Kevin flew 104 miles in just under four hours.

Neurons responsible for your muscles

NY York Times article here.

Whether we have to work out like a world-class 80-year-old athlete to benefit, however, remains in question.  Most of these competitors train intensely for several hours every week, Dr. Power said.  But on the plus side, some of them did not start their competitive regimens until they had reached their 50s, providing hope for the dilatory among us.

George Longshore «g.longshore» writes:

The new Glidercom Raptor Bluetooth headset arrived today and it is everything the other systems are not.  Specifically it actually works and does all that Gene claims it will.

It comes custom made for each brand of helmet.  I ordered this one for a long tailed 4fight Icaro.

The unit comes complete with radio dongle, helmet headset/microphone/Bluetooth unit, and push to talk (PTT) along with wall charger and triple jack pigtail to charge everything.

It took me a whopping 45 minutes to install everything according to Gene's very detailed instructions.  Everything pairs with itself as soon as it is activated and each component has an individual LED to let you know it is on and functioning.

There is no delay when the PTT is activated like with the old motorcycle systems.  The voice sound is clear and above all loud unlike the first generation units.  There are volume buttons to turn down the sound to tolerable levels.

You can pair other Bluetooth devices with the Raptor as well.  If you want to listen to music or have cellphone capabilities while flying, it will allow this.  I can't fathom why anyone would listen to music while flying, I kind of like to hear my vario and the wind, or other pilots in a gaggle.

Price varies based on helmet and radio combo used but all in all I think the future is finally here and not buying wires and not having to deal with the hassle they present makes the cost worth it in my mind.  This set was close to 400 smackers.

Available on Friday mornings from Owen Morse

Owen Morse|weather

April 1 - 3

Friday: brings a healthy Santa Ana but it was a toss up as to whether it will switch upslope in the last hour or two of the afternoon.  If you are already at the site it might be worth the drive up after 5pm.

Saturday: An upslope switch by 10am and very nice thermals to perhaps 8K. It will be our best day this weekend if you like strong thermal activity.  However, it could get gusty from the SW at low levels (while landing for example) in the late afternoon from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.

Sunday: will again be flyable and nicely soarable with more mid-day upslope wind and less thermal activity than Saturday, but less late afternoon wind in the LZ. Some high clouds will weaken the afternoon heating.
