The New York Times article

Dustin Martin|Gary Osoba|PG|record|sailplane|weather

Gary Osoba «wosoba» writes:

This Sunday, January 13th, the New York Times will run a long article (2 pages) on the Zapata World Record Encampment.  Some of the history of the event will be chronicled along with more of the outstanding World Record flights flown last year by Dustin Martin and Johnny Durand.  I just spoke with Arthur Sulzberger, son of the Publisher and Chairman of the Times to obtain some details.  The article will appear as the front page story in the Sports Section of the Sunday times, and will run in both the print edition and the online version.  Print copies can be obtained in the United States and some international locations at many local Starbuck's locations, or possibly your favorite bookstore.

This article continues the excellent coverage that the WRE has received in many publications of international caliber.  Although the policy of the NY Times precludes releasing entire articles for review prior to publication, many of the portions which I was able to review by phone sounded quite good in that they should acquaint the public with hang gliding in general and the remarkable flights that have been flown from the WRE.  During its history, more world records for hang gliders, paragliders, and sailplanes have been set from the WRE than any other venue.

Last week, US climatological services released preliminary findings and forecasting outlooks for 2013 in the US. Based upon this information and other data I have been studying, it would appear that the 2013 season may be even better than the conditions we experienced last year.  This very well may be the year that a human will break the 500 mile barrier in a flex wing.  Indeed, on Dustin and Johnny's record breaking flights last year, 500 miles would have been possible as the conditions would have supported a launch time at least an hour earlier than when they left.  If the conditions this year prove to be better, as forecasted, who knows how far pilots will be able to fly?

We are going to open registration for the event at this time, and depending upon the level of interest may have an expanded level of participation available.  We plan to begin on June 20th, with the event running for a minimum of 2-3 weeks and a maximum of 5 weeks, depending upon the weather and other factors.  Much planning remains but if you are inclined to attend, either for record attempts or simply personal bests in distance, please contact me for more details.  I will be traveling to Middle America over road for the next several days but will have email access once I stop traveling.

I had extensive conversation with Arthur, who is a paraglider pilot, and have every hope that the article will be accurate and lauditory.

Arrested for Gliding Over a Nuke Plant

sailplane

http://m.aopa.org/aircraft/articles/2013/130110secret-no-fly-zone.html#.UPARebcaxVc.mailto

Fleming, 70, had been arrested for breach of peace after flying his Rolladen-Schneider LS8-18 sailplane noiselessly over the h.B. Robinson Nuclear Generating Station at an altitude of 1,518 feet msl—by his estimates, about 1,000 feet over the power plant’s dome—on his way to search for lift at nearby Lake Robinson.

No airspace restrictions were printed on sectional charts; no notam marked the area off-limits.  When a woman at Hartsville Regional Airport relayed over the Unicom that law enforcement wanted him to land, he had flown to that airport and landed, greeted by a swarm of law enforcement vehicles.

Nonetheless, Fleming spent the night awake in a cell with 11 other inmates.  The next afternoon, still in custody, he discovered the details of the charges: “flying very close to the nuclear plant dome in a ‘no fly zone´”, “escalated a multi-jurisdictional call out to a homeland security situation”, “ordered several times to land”, “causing the disturbance throughout the community”.

He finally left the detention center 24 hours after his arrest, exhausted and eager to clear his name.  The charges were dropped the next month, but now Fleming wants to make sure no other pilots are subjected to a similar ordeal.

Thanks to Brad and Mike

Task 5

Worlds|Worlds 2013

35 km exit start cylinder centered to the southwest of Forbes airfield.  About 10 km from the airfield to the edge of the cylinder.  114 km from the edge of the start cylinder to Cumnock to the northeast (downwind). Then cross wind 21 km to the north northwest to Yeoval.  Then upwind 45 km over a small range to Tomingley.  Then south 18 km cross wind to the grass airfield just east of Peak Hill next to the golf course.  A very tough task if the wind is strong.

Task stopped near end due to gust front and general strong winds

Photo by Flip.  Riding with the west wind back into Forbes from the airfield.  It was only 109 degrees Fahrenheit at that point.  You can see the mid level clouds in the background.  They were with us all day.

More photos from Flip for Task 5.

Task stopped about two hours and forty five minutes later as pilots approached the last turnpoint at Tomingley where a gust front and in general strong head wind conditions were evident.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/13/sports/two-men-one-sky-the-silent-realization-of-a-purer-form-of-flight.html

THE CLOUDS stretched across the Texas sky like a highway.  And soaring along those lanes, lofted nearly 8,000 feet by the hot air rising from the earth, two hang gliders raced in tight pursuit of the most prized feat in this high adrenaline niche sport: farthest ever flown.

The men suspended underneath their aluminum and fabric wings, Jonny Durand and Dustin Martin, had already journeyed 438 miles in 10 hours, splitting up and converging repeatedly as each pursued his own path alongside the red-tailed hawks and turkey vultures.  Against all odds, they were now flying nearly wingtip to wingtip.

Because of the consoles of gadgets mounted on their control bars, the two men knew that they had now flown farther than any person ever had using a hang glider.  Farther than anyone had without the drone of an engine or the protective shell of a plane.  They had flown, and were flying still, farther than anyone had in the manner dreamed of in centuries of tall tales, from Icarus to Superman — cheeks in the wind, like a bird.

I took twenty of the top finishing pilots' kml track logs from Day 4 Task 3 and converted these back into igc format then ran then in Naviter SeeYou 3D animation.  For the background image I was able to convert a section of Google Earth satellite image into cmr format for SeeYou.

I chose this day because it really was a race with a large percentage making goal.  This animation gives me a very good sense of the race aspect of hang glider comps.  I hope you all enjoy it.

The dramatic weather

video|weather|Worlds 2013

The task was stopped when the winds got too high at 4:53 PM. Launching was without any drama, but the winds were forecasted to get higher later an they did.

The clouds were with us all day streaming from the west from the cyclone off western Australia.  They got thicker and thicker as the day went on. We launched in sunny conditions but there were clouds to our west.

Pilots got well north of Parkes and the route took them east from Tomingley south of Dubbo, but we could see rain activity north of Dubbo.

The radar showed activity northeast of Dubbo and just north of our goal at Gulgong at 4:30 PM.

The winds picked up within the last half hour at Dubbo just 20 kilometers north of the course line.  Pilots were being pushed in the direction of Dubbo by the strong southwest winds.

Bruce Wynne and I were meeting deciding what to do about the task and he called it at 4:53 PM, with a twenty minute set back.

Pilots at goal on task 7

Worlds|Worlds 2013

Watching the track logs it looks like plenty of pilots have made goal by 6:15 PM.

The meet director actually sustained a complaint of the meet director's decision regarding yesterday's task.  It had to do with when the pilot's track log was stopped for scoring purposes on a stopped task and whether or not he or she entered into a CTAF, which provides for a penalty.  I assume that there will be a protest from those affected, but maybe not.
