Canoa, Ecuador
James Dean Byrd Foundation
This summer, we are launching a fundraising campaign to cover our annual teacher’s pay budget! While the monthly tuition that parents pay does contribute to overhead, the foundation is responsible for covering the remaining costs incurred on a daily basis at school.
Why Support Teacher’s Pay?
About 85% of our annual budget is dedicated to teacher and staff pay. The school employs ten teachers, two administrators, and a groundskeeper; providing much needed stable work in a precarious tourist economy.
That said, our teachers receive a minimum wage salary (currently $386 a month) while their public school counterparts are paid $800 or more. It is a common phenomenon that private schools struggle to pay teachers the same as public school teachers, but we still want to do better! Low salaries can cause rapid teacher turnover and dissatisfaction, which can affect the students’ experience. With a successful summer fundraising campaign, we will be able to cover the teachers’ pay within our current budget and see if pay increase is feasible in the future.
