The performance issue

Davis Straub

Davis Straub

Where are you going to find an honest look at the issue of hang glider performance?  Certainly not in the monthly magazine (although I looked at it a bit back in 1992).

All it takes is a willingness to look at the facts and try to make sense of them.  But first get the facts together.  That's what I'll be doing in the next few issues.

You can send a mere $20 or more for a yearly subscription/donation.  To pay for your subscription with your credit card or PayPal account:

If you’d rather just send a check for $20 (US Dollars, only please) or more, please feel free to do so. The mail gets forwarded to me wherever I’m at.

Payable to:

SeeYou 3.81
Andrej implements entry start circles, so we can use it in the competition mode.

Andrej Kolar|PG|SeeYou 3.81

Andrej Kolar «andrej» writes:

SeeYou 3.81 (released just yesterday) has an option to declare a start sector as "start on observation zone entry" (you can set that up in Task properties > Options.  That eliminates the need for designing a tube-type sector that covers the whole territory.

We have also followed the discussion about not needing this checkbox in the first place, however we opted to include it nevertheless.  Even though the guys that were discussing this "could not think of a good reason" why someone would demand a "start on entry" when the first turnpoint is outside the start sector – we have worked with several contest organizations that did just that.  I do in general approve of the idea of not having this option, but the reality seems to be somewhat different.  We have therefore included that.

And by the way.  The Slovenian paragliding community says "thank you" for your OzGAP 2005/GAP 2000 scoring scripts that run in SeeYou in competition mode.  They are happily using them!

to Table of Contentsto next topic Or is it aspect ratio?

Tue, Apr 15 2008, 7:13:34 am PDT
Aspect Ratio
Let's compare reported aspect ratios
Wills Wing T2 144 154
7.3 7.4

Airborne C4 13 13.5 14
7.3 7.4 7.6

Moyes RS 3.5 RS 4
7.7 7.7

S3 S3.5 S4 S4.5 S5
7.3 7.5 7.3 7.6 7.4

Aeros Combat L 12 13 14 15
7.8 7.9 8.1 7.8

Laminar Z9 12.6 13.2 13.3 14.1 14.8
7.6 7.7 7.3 7.8 7.5

Or ranked by aspect ratio:

8.1 - Aeros Combat L 14
7.9 - Aeros Combat L 13
7.8 - Aeros Combat L 15, 12, Laminar Z9 14.1
7.7 - Laminar Z9 13.2, Moyes RS 3.5, RS 4
7.6 - Airborne C4 - 14, Moyes S4.5, Laminar Z9 12.6
7.5 - Laminar Z9 14.8, Moyes S 3.5
7.4 - Wills Wing T2 154, Airborne C4 - 13.5, Moyes S5
7.3 - Wills Wing T2 144, Airborne C4 - 13, Moyes S3, Laminar Z9 13.3

Does aspect ratio "determine" glide performance?  Well, only partly.  More in the next issue.

And have the manufactures accurately reported their aspects ratios?  Are these measures comparable across manufacturer's methods of measuring them?

Have I done this correctly?

Going Golden

Canadian Nationals 2008|PG

http://goflyxc.com/2008/cdnhgnats

A comp that will help Canadian pilots prepare for international competition while giving all Pilots a opportunity to learn new skills and compete in a classic location.

As the 2009 Hang gliding World Championships will take place in the southern French alps there is no closer match to this are in Canada as Golden British Columbia.  The dates of the meet were picked to capitalize on the best flying conditions this site has to offer.  Golden has been the site of many Hang gliding and paragliding comps in the past and to many pilots it is like an old friend.

Golden is a town of about 3500 people, with another 3500 living in the surrounding rural area that relate to Golden.  All kinds of outdoor activities abound: climbing, hiking, mountain biking, motor cross, white water rafting and kayaking, motorcycling, hunting in seasons, fishing, archery range, shooting range, canoeing, bird watching, and all kinds of skiing and snow-machining in winter.

Not forgetting hang gliding and paragliding ! There are lakes and sloughs to go swimming in or just relax at. If you have not seen mountains before, you are in for a treat!

LOGISTICS

As we will be launching from the same site everyday, getting to and from launch will not be a problem as it is a 14 km drive from the meet headquarters on a 2 wheel drive road up to launch.  The launch itself can hold upwards of 60 gliders but as only 30 are expected space on launch is more than sufficient.  As golden is one of the premier sites in the world it has all of the services and amenities that any pilot could want.

MEET ORGANIZATION

As always, the focus is on providing a solid learning experience for all that are willing to learn.  As I have organized a number of regional comps as well as my experience gained traveling to many international comps I have a very solid understanding of what makes a successful competition that is fun and fair.  I am in talks with a couple of different individuals to do the score keeping and have a great deal of faith in any of the individuals that I am considering.

PILOT INFO:

An entry fee of $175.00 per pilot is expected with retrieval and rides up the mountain left to the individual pilots.  Pilot registration will be done through goflyxc.com (http://goflyxc.com/2008/cdnhgnats) with Early registration open to Canadian pilots for the first 2 weeks followed by open registration.  I am planning to have 30-40 pilots but many more could be accommodated with the resources available to us.

CONTACT INFORMATION:

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have concerning this proposal, and I welcome any feedback from anyone that might help make this the best nationals Canada has ever had.  Phone @ (403) 998-5114.

Jeff Nicolay at Morningside Flight Park «morningside» writes:

Rhett Radford left Quest on Monday flying his Dragonfly to Arizona.  When the meet ends he will then fly it to Morningside in New Hampshire for the summer.  He generally calls ahead on his cell phone to spend nights with compadres along the way, but in true barn storming style occasionally pulls out his sleeping bag and camps under a wing.  As yet he has not shared a field with Don Shimoda.
