The first event for the Northern California Cross Country League for 2008 will be held on 29th and 30th March at Potato Hill.  The league is open to all pilots- hang glider and paraglider pilots are all welcome to attend.  They should be happy thermaling with other pilots and able to land safely not necessarily in the designated landing zone.  If you wish to attend please meet at 9.30 am in the LZ by Fouts Springs on Saturday morning.  All pilots must fly with a serviceable radio, reserve and GPS to be scored.

There is a website devoted to the league: www.santacruzparagliding.com where you can find all the information you need for the league.  If you wish to compete please fill out the registration forms (available online at http://www.santacruzparagliding.com/downloads.html) and email them to me ASAP.  Bring a completely waiver (which can also be found on the website) to the pilot meeting in the LZ on Saturday morning.  You should also upload waypoints into your GPS unit before you come.  Software and the waypoints file can be found at the league website at the downloads page.  The costs for each race is $10 per day for preregistered pilots and this is refundable if the task gets cancelled.  For those pilots not preregistered the cost per task is $15.

If you wish to car pool, figure out places to eat or camp, please register with the yahoo groups (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SFBAPAXC/) so that you can co-ordinate with other pilots.

The Cross Country league is an informal series of cross country competitions running from March through to October held at flying sites within driving distance of the Bay Area.  The league is set to help pilots of all abilities in improving their flying skills by flying set courses with other pilots.  These are essentially a fly in with a mission.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Wesley Hill <wesleyianhill> writes:

The results for the 2008 Flatter than the Flatlands comp, held at Birchip over Easter, are at http://www.hgfa.asn.au/~fttf

Steve Blenkinsop came first overall flying Corinna's Litespeeds Litespeed S3.5, followed by Alan Beavis and Paul Kelley.

Friday: Too windy.

Saturday: A 71 km fun task was set with an additional 22 km O and R for the 'guns'.  Five pilots completed the gun task with Steve Blenkinsop fastest, and two completed the fun task with Don Rottman fastest.  There was drama in the paddock when a monster dusty went through the launch line.  Peter Davies got tossed into the air (not hooked in, just holding onto his glider) and landed hard breaking his collarbone.

Sunday: 55 and 73 km tasks were set.  None of the guns made their goal with Steve Blenkinsop getting closest at 66 km.  Alan Beavis was the only pilot to complete the fun task.  Most of the pilots that did well also got wet in the air, and many pilots that did not get out of the paddock got drenched when a rain cell moved through.

Monday: The trough from Sunday was forecast to deepen, so with our expectations low we headed out.  The rain stayed clear of the task area and we set a 41 km fun task and 57 km gun task.  Four pilots made the gun task with Steve Blenkinsop again having the fastest time.  John Mitchell flew 33 km to come first in the fun category.

Stop the night sky pollution 41.873651,-87.677765,Chicago,+Ill,+USA(Chicago, Ill, USA)

Peter BirrenPeter Birren <peter> writes:

This weekend, on March 29 from 8-9 pm, it's Lights Out all over the world.  There's a meeting of 200 local mayors in Chicago this afternoon (Mar 26) and the main topic is light pollution.  Check out http://www.earthhourus.org/chicago.php.

I'm helping a group with a presentation at this meeting.  There are several good reasons for limiting light pollution and changing the way cities are lit: from huge money savings in energy to better safety and security, to astronomy - or just being able to see the stars - there's also a direct link between city lighting and breast cancer.
