Pre-Europeans in Greifenburg - day seven
(This topic is in: Jun.25 Jun.22 Jun.21 Jun.20 --> )
Another day of bad weather
(Emberger Alm, Austria)
Day 6 and Day 7 of the competition were both non-taskable due to a forecast of strong winds (gusts up to 80km/hr) and thunderstorms in the flying area. After the weather briefing at the campground most pilots chose to go sightseeing or explore the beautiful area through hiking or biking. A few chose to free fly today and some found out how difficult it can be to get down from over 3000m quickly when the SW wind really gets stronger and the lift is 6 – 8m up when flying in a straight line.
A counter complaint was made by the Dutch team saying that the Day 5 task should have been scored. Wolfgang is in the process of contacting team leaders about this for further discussions.
So far only three tasks count. While the weather has been bad in Karnten, it has been good in France: http://ozreport.com/otherblogs.php#skyrider77.blogspot.com and http://skyrider77.blogspot.com/.

Cloud streets in Michigan
The fine weather continues here in Michigan
(Cloud 9, Iosco, Michigan)
Today was a magic day. The RUC forecast called for a blue day, or maybe just a few wispies, so we were surprised to see the cu's popping at 11 AM. I rushed to get stuff together, given that the forecast was also for north northeast winds over 10 mph. The only fly in the ointment was the satellite photo which showed a wide east west band of cirrus 100 miles to the south. This would cut off any hope of long flights to the south.
The cloud streets were already there by shortly after noon as Tracy pulled me up to the cu's. In about fifteen minutes I was over 5,000' MSL (4,100' AGL). I headed downwind to the southwest to check out conditions and they were already great.
Unfortunately it was clear by the time I was ten miles out that the cu's lasted only another ten or twenty miles and the there was indeed a bank of cirrus to the south which added to the difficulty of going that direction. Fortunately I already had a 50 km triangle task in mind to I took the opportunity to nick the southwest turnpoint and headed east for more fun and games.
Didn't quite make it back after getting the second turnpoint but the air was great.
Got back for a second try at 4 PM and the cloud streets were looking like major convergence. In fact they were sucking lift like crazy and we had some good flights upwind to the north .and back. The cloud streets hung on until almost 8 PM.

Pre-Europeans in Greifenburg - day eight
(This topic is in: Jun.25 Jun.22 Jun.21 Jun.20 --> )
Is it all over?
(Emberger Alm, Austria)
Corinna reports:
If pilots can't fly, they get bored and start discussing flights and decisions of the previous days. So the Dutch team decided to complain about Wolfgangs decision to cancel day 4 instead of stopping it.
The Dutch came up with a new idea to equalize the disadvantages of the different start gates, especially the mandatory 2nd start gate for the top 30. Together with the team leaders this matter was discussed last night, in the end Wolfgang did not change the result, the day was still invalid.
Today we have low clouds, moisture in the air and sometimes on the ground, so it looks like we might get an early award ceremony today. After 3 valid tasks, Oleg is in the lead, ahead of Primoz and Andreas Olsson
, the Austrian team is ranked 1st, the Swiss 2nd and we are 3rd. In the women's ranking, Natalia Petrova
from Russia is 1st, I'm 2nd and Monique 3rd.
The schedule has the competition going through Sunday with Sunday (the 24th) as a reserve competition day. Seems like this is the circumstances where you would want a reserve day. Maybe it looks bad for tomorrow also.

Going to Hell
Getting a drink with your buddies
(Cloud 9, Iosco, Michigan)
Yesterday I landed in Gregory coming back on my 50 km FAI triangle attempt. In town there was a little green street sign that pointed toward Hell. Hell must have not been too far away. Turns out it was a few miles to the east. I could have easily flown over Hell.

Today I took off on my bicycle and after a while decided to ride to Hell and back. The Highway to Hell was busy, busy, busy. When I got to Hell I didn't know what in the Hell to do, so I turned around and came back. The road out of Gregory, the town nearest to Hell, is Church Street.
