The Flytec Cross Country/Competition Clinic will again be at Quest Air March 15-18, 2007, led by U.S.  team members Dustin MartinDustin Martin and Kevin CarterKevin Carter.  Four days of learning and flying with the first day dedicated to landing, towing, and equipment perfection.

The last two clinics were wildly popular.  This year we want to raise the quality even higher by focusing on a smaller group for more individual attention.  To maximize value for the hungriest pilots we will fly three to a group capping the clinic at six pilots.

The clinic will incorporate both general Cross Country and competition Cross Country skills.  This will includes learning and refining GPS navigation, using the radio, perfecting Cross Country technique, improving out landing skills, and practicing aero towing.

Pilots will be grouped with similar wings and skills to foster consistent group flying.  Each day your group will rotate to a different instructor so you can experience a variety of techniques.  This is an opportunity for pilots of all abilities and all glider types to take their flying to the next level.  The clinic curriculum will be custom tailored to the pilots who commit in advance.

We want to encourage, support, and help teach our future champions and Cross Country record holders in a safe, friendly, laid back environment that will also cram a pilots head with as much information he or she is ready for!

The cost of the clinic is 300 dollars plus tows.

One of the most popular aspects of last year's event was the landing clinic.  This year the program will more tightly integrate several landing sessions in response to demand.

Each day will include

* Morning seminars on weather, thermalling, gps use, route planning, Cross Country skills, landing, towing, foot launching, tactics, etc.

* Midday Cross Country tasks.  These will be flown as a group tailored to the needs, skills, and equipment of the students.

* Evening GPS scoring, flight analysis, and debrief.

It's that time of year again.

Everyone here at Quest is ramping up for the US competition season.  Anyone that hangs around here knows how much the comp season means to Quest, it's always like gearing up for that big vacation trip!  This is always a high energy time here.

Of course, we'll keep teaching hang gliding and supporting our solo pilots.  In addition, we always have enough staff on hand to support our friends down at the Florida Ridge as well as take care of business here at home (it doesn't hurt that lots of excellent pilots show up here to help out this time of year).

Up first is Dustin and Kevin's XC clinic March 15-18.  This has always proven to be a very popular clinic and an excellent way to get your head into "competition mode".  www.questairforce.com

Then it's off to the Florida Ridge meet 7-13th April.  http://thefloridaridge.com/

Back up to Quest for the Flytec meet, 15-23rd April and the Race of Champions.  www.questairforce.com

May brings us to Dustin's golf course aerotow meet in Casa Grande, AZ.  The Santa Cruz Flats Race.  May 7-13 at Francisco Grande golf resort (just west of Casa Grande) http://events.dowsett.ca/2007/arizona/reg

Up to Maryland for the East Coast Championships June 3 -9 in Ridgely Maryland www.aerosports.net

Too windy 30 40 44.88 S,150 36 31.33 E,Mt Borah, Manilla(Mt Borah, Manilla)

http://www.manilla2007.com/

The forecast looked promising with light and variable winds but a fast moving front to the south proved the weather bureau wrong.  Pre-frontal northerly winds were racing across the region most of the morning.  By the final Team Leaders HQ re-briefing at 12.30pm there was no change and winds at Mt Borah were averaging 30km/h with gusts to over 40km/h.  Perfect skies but too windy.  The day was cancelled.

Petra Slivova is leading both the women's section and the whole comp 30 40 44.88 S,150 36 31.33 E,Mt Borah, Manilla(Mt Borah, Manilla)

http://www.manilla2007.com/

The forecast was for isolated thunderstorms and variable winds ...  another hard day for task setting.  The winds on the balloon flight showed some light NE-NW under 2000m but moderate SE-SW above .  A 57kms race task to Tamwoth City goal (in the middle of the Tamworth CTA !) Was set via the special event airspace corridor.  Mostly blue conditions and light climbs greeted the 150 pilots on course after the 14.30 start gate.  A wall of Cu-Nimbs sat 150kms to the south all day long and kept pilots carefully watching the sky ahead.  13 pilots made goal and 15-20 were just short.  Petra was in the top places again - she will now be leading the event after 3 tasks - simply sensational !

http://canadianparaglidingteam.blogspot.com/

Our gaggle spent about 1 hour over the 1st TP at about 1000 m (and the ground is about 370 m), in 0’s mostly, with the occasional 0.5 m/s, followed by a –0.5 m/s.  People were yelling at each other, turning all sorts of directions, and generally being very rude to each other in the game to get the most lift out of the “thermal” (I hesitate to even call it that, it was so random).  There was at least 1 midair; I heard it and looked down to see the gliders separating, with one glider with a big cravatte (or broken lines, it was hard to tell), spiralling down until he threw his reserve.  It opened OK and he landed in the sportsfields in a tree next to the river, and was apparently OK.  The other person continued flying so I guess their glider was OK too.

http://gravsports.blogspot.com/

There were multiple mid-air bumps, at least two full-on mid-air collissions, cursing in at least five different languages, road rage and lots of spins from trying to work the light lift.  I was INTO it--fully prepared to mid-air rather than leave the "lift." It was stupid beyond any reasonable definition of the word, but I was in the air.  I watched gliders lawn-dart all around me with the thought, "Vegemites!"

There was an article every day we were there on David Hicks

When we were in Australia you constantly heard about David Hicks (an Australian citizen held in Guantanamo) and heard from his lawyer, US Army Maj.  Michael Mori.  Australians (other than John Howard) appeared to be appalled that Mr.  Hicks had not been returned to Australia and had been held in Guantanamo for five years.  They didn't seem to be supporters of Mr.  Hicks, they just wanted him to have "a fair go." Very Australian.  Now this news breaks:

NY Times article

The decision by the United States military to charge an Australian citizen, David Hicks, with one terrorism-related offense comes as Prime Minister John Howard is under mounting pressure, even from conservatives in his own party, to have Mr.  Hicks charged, tried and brought home.

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/012785.php

Now comes word that Hicks' trial may be delayed because his American military lawyer, Maj.  Michael Mori, is being threatened with prosecution under the UCMJ by the chief American prosecutor, Col.  Morris Davis.

Morris has criticized Mori's frequent trips to Australia; and, as The Times reported yesterday, American embassy officials tried and failed to have the Pentagon bar Mori from coming to Australia.

Why would anyone doubt that Hicks will get a fair trial?
