New Flytec 5030 and Compeo firmware and functions
Update in beta test
(Quest Air)
Steve Kroop at Flytec USA <<info>>
writes:
The new version is a beta test version and is not released yet. I
will put it up on the Flytec USA (www.flytec.com)
website as soon as it is released. If you use FlyChart, version 4.52.6 (http://www.flytec.com/Products/Software/FlyChart_452.htm)
or later is recommended.
The improvements are:
New user field: L/D to required to goal (over several waypoints)
Display of the acoustic gap for McCready
Bug fixed if if more than 100 flights in the memory
No recording of flight if flight time is less than three minutes
New flight recording rules:
If GPS is on and (Avg. 60s of GPS Speed is greater than 10km/h or Delta height
since Start greater than 30 meters) then flight is recorded.
If GPS is off and (Delta height since Start greater 30m) then flight is
recorded.
User-field compatibility ->New user-fields always at the end of the list for the
external interface (FlyChart). In the instrument, the order can be arbitrary
Additional Speed offset 0-10km/h if the 5030 is configured to use the pitot
tube. This is there to correct the influence of the slower air speed under the
wing.
New User-field XT Error (Cross track Error). This user-field shows the
perpendicular distance to the active leg of a route. The precision depends on
the length of the active leg and is poorest in the middle of the leg between two
waypoints. For example if the leg is 50km, the fault can be 400m in the middle
of the leg. This because the angles between the line between the two waypoints
and your new heading to the waypoint becomes very small. The user-field shows
positive values if you are right of the track and negative values if you are
left of the track.

Fires in Victoria
A fire storm?
(Mystic Hill)
Heather <hmull> writes re the Bogong Cup, coming up in January:
We're expecting a windy weekend of 40 degrees here (NE Victoria)
and the fire services are getting ready for what they say will be the worst fire
weekend ever recorded. The predicted northerly winds should keep us out of
trouble, but further south towards Gippsland is a real problem for people there
with the many approaching fires predicted to join up into a superfire.
Fire hazard has been a real enough threat in past years at the Bogong Cup, but
for pilots who smoke, this is advance warning that smoking out in the open on
launch or in a landing field will likely result in removal of the pilot from the
rest of the competition.
We're looking forward to a great competition with possibly the highest pilot
calibre field we've ever had!
Gilbert Griffith <gil> writes:
For the last two days we have had less than 1km visibility here in
Bright. Pretty smoky. But the fires are well away from us and the coming winds
should push them further away. Lots of ash falling, but nothing alight. Been
picking up leaves and cleaning up the garden as well as the garden next door. The bush needs a good burn out.

Clarification from CIVL re upcoming meets
The CIVL competition calendar was mistaken, but the Oz Report
reports were correct
(Lausanne, Switzerland)
A couple of readers wrote in to say that the CIVL calendar contradicted my reports from the CIVL Bureau meeting. I checked with CIVL President, Flip Koetsier <f.koetsier>, and here's what he says:
Thank you for drawing my attention to the competition calendar. Something is terribly wrong on the competition calendar. I don't know what
caused the mistakes. I have taken actions to correct the information on the
calendar.
To make things clear:
At the next plenary (early February 2007) the next championships are supposed be
awarded (this is from the bid guidelines and this information has been sent to
all CIVL delegates and FAI member countries) for the following meets:
- World hang gliding championship in 2009
- World paragliding championship in 2009
- World Accuracy paragliding championship in 2009
- European hang gliding class 2 and 5 and Women's class 1 championships in 2009
In the competition calendar you found that we have received bids from Italy to
organise the women's, class 2 and class 5 world championships in 2009. That is
not correct (also see the to be awarded championships; there, of course, would
be no worlds hang gliding class 2 and 5 and women's class 1 in 2009, as that
would be scheduled for 2008 and 2010).
We have also not received bids for the European hang gliding class 2 and 5 and
women's class 1 championships.
"No word about the 2008 worlds hang gliding class 5", because:
At the 2006 plenary (last February) we could have awarded the 2008 world
championships hang gliding class 2 and 5 and women's class 1, but no bids were
received and we have not been able to find an organiser.
CIVL internal regulations 3.6.4 states: If CIVL was not able to award a
scheduled championship two years ahead of the competition, the CIVL bureau
should try to find an organiser. If an acceptable organiser is found and he
delivers a bid, the bureau may award the competition to this organiser. This
decision is subject to approval of the CIVL plenary meeting.
The plenary meeting has approved that the bureau should try to find organisers
for the championships that no bids were received for. The bureau has not been
able to find an organiser for the world championships hang gliding class 2, 5
and women's class 1.
By the way, we also did not receive a bid for the European hang gliding
championships 2008. I then contacted Wolfgang Sattleger, and as you know the
Europeans will be in Greifenburg.
We have also not received a bid for the World hang gliding championships in 2009
yet, so the bid from Italy (that you refer to and that you found on the
competition calendar) is not correct. Italy made a bid to organise the
paragliding World Championships and that is it.
Sorry for the wrong information on the competition calendar. It will be
corrected.

Class 2 ATOS
Fly your ATOS in a fuselage
(FlyDesign, Germany)
Thanks to Steward Midwinter who sent this link:
http://www.fliegen-ist.de/html/charly_produkte.htm

It's already made its first test flight, from a tow-launch. It will be foot-launchable, stick-controlled, with the pilot in the wing, and promises a significant performance boost over stock Atoses.
Christoph at AIR writes:
We will show our ATOS Cage at Thermik, the project we have worked on for years on it where the pilot is in the wing.
