I just picked up the winch at SFO yesterday. We still have to check for shipping damage, assemble, fill with fluids, install line, and test. We might be doing some initial testing this weekend such as pulling the ATV and first flights.
While New England is far north of Florida we have been having a
couple really good days in the past week. We haven't had good air like this in
September for many years. However most of the season has been either weak or
rainy.
Last Thursday Tom Nejame (AIR ATOS VX) and I (Millennium) had a nice ~60 miler
from Ellenville, New York into our home state of Connecticut.
On Tuesday Pete Pfeiffer (AIR ATOS VX) joined us and the three of us had a
spectacular flight filled with good climbs and cloud bases of 6K where it was 40
degrees. I landed a mile from my house and Tom and Pete milked it further for
106 miles. I snapped this cool shot of Bantam Lake (Connecticut) as Tom, I and a
bald eagle (not visible here) thermaled up at 500 fpm.
But in hindsight, Abu Ghraib wasn't a scandal for the Bush
administration. It was a coup. Because when the Senate passes the president's
detainee bill today, we will, as a country, have yet more evidence that
yesterday's disgrace is today's ordinary, and that—with a little time and a
little help from the media—we can normalize almost anything in the span of a few
short years. Lord Byron once wrote that "There are some feelings time cannot
benumb/ Nor torture shake." He was, evidently, wrong as to both counts.
