Learning going low and slow

My training took place in Algodonales, Spain.  The Instructor was Tony Webb of Lejair (www.lejair.com).

This was in March, 2005.

I've now got a UK Club Pilot hang glider rating (I think the US H2), had one day of powered hang glider training.  Have joined a hang gliding club, and looking to flying with then to gain more experience, and at the same time am working hard to get more publicity and also raise sponsorship for the challenge itself.

Things are a little slower than I would like them to be, but I'm still determined to do it, even if I have to personally finance it, even if it takes longer before it happens.  I have about 30 yrs to go, so there is hope.

Do we want the CIVL jury, stewards, whatever, measuring gliders on launch?

http://ozreport.com/10.022#1

http://ozreport.com/docs/2006plenaryminutes.htm

From the CIVL Hang Gliding Committee:

1.  DHV Proposal for safety standards.

The DHV conducted a series of glider measurements at several competitions in the summer of 2005 to test the feasibility of measuring glider pitch device settings.  These tests proved to be valuable and produced useful data.  The results of these tests appear in annex 11 of the 2006 agenda.  This check will be for category 1 meets only.

Motion (John Aldridge, seconded by Jim Zeiset):

A working group be formed to move forward the introduction of the DHV proposal. Passed unanimously.  The working group consists of: ChristofChristof KratznerKratzner, Jim Zeiset, Koos de KeijzerKoos de Keijzer, Manfred RuhmerManfred Ruhmer and Dennis PagenDennis Pagen.  They are charged with communicating with the manufacturers and pilots to spread the benefits of this program.  It was discussed and agreed upon that a working program can improve safety as well as reduce the liability of meet officials.  Reduced risk should also increase the pleasure of pilots worried about the need to push the limits of safety for better performance.

Postponed at the General Session:

DHV proposal for safety standards (Annex 11 to the Agenda) - this was modified by the German delegate so it only addressees Category 1 events.  It will be trialed this year at the Europeans with no penalties so it was removed from the 2006 plenary agenda by agreement with the proposer and will go on the 2007 agenda.

Let this be a warning to all competition pilots.  CIVL and DHV are on the move.  The CIVL hang gliding committee was ready to pass this this year so it looks this might happen if we don't stop it now.  Don't say you weren't warned.

Up in Queensland, the Ozzie blokes just love competition.

Damien Gates <gatesd> ,Tex, writes:

The Dalby Big Air is BACK!  Running from the Sat 22nd April (as the practice day) to an including the Friday 28th.  Last year's competition was a great success and offered all there was to be had and more for the time of year and as the last competition in the Aussie season.  Once again Queensland will highlight why all soaring pilots should move up here ;OD as Qld hosts the first and last Competitions in Australia.

Quote from a well know soaring legend "Dalby is AWESOME"

Dalby provides year round soaring potential and we expect that this years Big Air will provide just that "BIG AIR" PLUS "BIG FUN" Well, the Big Air is weather dependent but the Big FUN simply depends ON YOU GETTING THERE!!

Bo is on a 180 sq.ft.  Aeros Target in 20+ mph winds

We've been watching the forecast for today for the last couple of days:

Strong and perfect for a record attempt.  The Dr.  Jack and FSL forecast was for not clouds, but no resolutely so, and so the first cu's appeared at 9 AM and the streets were well formed at 9:30 AM:

Click for higher resolution version.

Bo took off just before noon.  He only needed to go 100 miles to earn $1000 from Campbell BowenCampbell Bowen and Quest Air.  Bo was the only one with enough courage to fly on this day.  It was 20 mph, seven feet above the runway, gusting to 24 mph.  I really think it wasn't that re safety.  Bo had a fine foot launch and we didn't notice any trouble on tow.  This would be a perfect day in Zapata and we would all be going for it.

(This topic is in: <-- May 16 Apr.4 Mar.16 Mar.10 Mar.8 Jan.30 Jan.27 --> )

John Aldridge misapplies the Sporting Code

John Aldridge is responsible at the CIVL Bureau for the CIVL Sporting Code, so it is quite disconcerting to see that he doesn't seem to understand it and misapplies it.  After his first excuse for disqualifying the FAUX meet began to crumble, he reached down to look at the local rules and then went to the Sporting Code to find this section:

2.  31 Scoring

In the absence of any day validation in the scoring system, a championship task is defined as one in which not fewer than 20% of the gliders in the class fly the minimum scoring distance as stated in the scoring formula.  This distance may be varied by agreement with CIVL as the performance of gliders improves, but in any case, shall be a constant throughout a championship.  The overall results shall be computed from the approved scoring system.  The status of guest pilots for scoring purposes shall be stated in the Local Regulations.

First of all Section 2, and therefore section 2.31, refers to Category 1 championships, not Category 2 meets, like the FAUX meet.  Category 2 meets are not required to use the CIVL Sporting Code rules.  Here's the regulation on that:

3.  1.1 Conflict

The rules for Second Category events shall be based as far as possible on those for First Category events and shall not conflict with them in principle.

Notice the key words, "as much as possible" and "in principle." The rules of Category 2 meets are almost never the same as those found at Category 1 meets.

Paul and Lauren used the GAP scoring system in Race.  This system has a built in "day validation." Therefore even though this section doesn't apply to Category 2 meets, it doesn't apply also because the meet organizers were using a scoring system that had a day validation scheme.

This section of the Sporting Code appears to be an old barnacle left over from the days before almost everyone used GAP and Race.

It really is unfortunate to see John over reaching here.
